Terraces with no hallway or porch - where do you put your coats & shoes?

CatAndHisKit · 09/11/2020 01:17

I'm looking to buy in an area where this is the norm - good size living room and dining/kitchen downstairs, and people either use front door straight to the lounge, or onl use the back entrabbe through kitchen.

Sometimes I can see coat hooks on kitchen door or a small shoe rack but in some of these houses there is no sign of coats / shoes (unless they hide it for viewings so it's more neat).

I always had a hall, be it in a flat or a house. I feel like it's an irritating issue but I'd love to know what do people do as possibly there is a simple solution?

I'd like to know the answer to this too

Cupboard under the stairs?

GidgetGirl · 09/11/2020 01:24

In every house of this type I’ve lived in, the big cupboard under the stairs. If there is one! In nearly all terraces round here, the stairs are situated between front and rear rooms. So there is a walk-in cupboard underneath them - the door to which is situated next to the door between front and rear rooms.

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/11/2020 01:25

I have a hallway and I still always put my coat away in the wardrobe when I come in, it’s just tidier. I have an ottoman close to the front door to stow shoes in: a decent quality one would work on show in the living room.

CatAndHisKit · 09/11/2020 03:05

Gidget and Shmi interesting, I haven't noticed these.
I think where I'm looking the stairs aer usually off the kitchen, so you have to go into the front room then turn and go through kitchen, but I didnt see any doors to a cupboard the other side of stairs (i.e. passage from front room to the kitchen, I think it was just a solid wall you walk past - hmm must pay attention next time.

Comtesse ottoman is good - the only thing is, it's bound to get dirty vetry quickly inside, I suppose you could put sections into it to seperate pairs of shoes vertically. Re coats - ok if it's just yourself but others will still leave them there...and what about guests - in these houses also ou can't fit a really large wardrobe, mine would be full as it is!

Ugh, squeezed in a shoe rack by the kitchen table and back door. New build, kitchen diner. It uses to drive me potty. We've recently moved house and no longer have to sit on top of our shoe rack when eating. In the summer when it wasn't going to rain I put it outside.

Bubblebox · 09/11/2020 03:29

Our shoes are in a box by the living room door and coats are on hooks behind the kitchen door.
I hate it and would avoid buying a house with no hall if at all possible.

RainbowMum11 · 09/11/2020 03:35

When I had a house that opened straight into the front room, I had a coat rack & shelf on the wall from the front door to the stairs and a crate/box which I kept my day to day shoes in.
The cupboard under the stairs I needed for the freezer as the kitchen was tiny.

SilkieRabbits · 09/11/2020 04:40

We had coat hooks next to front door on wall enough for us and guests, did leave excess coats (like not that season ones hanging in wardrobes). Shoes were kept by front door or by back door if wellies etc. Though occassional shoes were kept in wardrobes upstairs on floor level.

wellthatsunusual · 09/11/2020 04:47

This isn't helpful I know, but this thread got me thinking about all my friends and relatives houses and out of all of them, I don't know anyone with shoes or a shoe rack in the hall and only one who has coats hanging up. Had honestly never crossed my mind before now!

custardbear · 09/11/2020 05:50

My mum bought a house like this after her divorce with my dad so money was tight, we used the cupboard under the stairs

If it's anything like our old house the rooms weee massive with storage in all bedrooms, it was great

Juanbablo · 09/11/2020 05:52

We have a space under the stairs where there is a shoe rack and coat hooks. Hallway is narrow.

pinkbalconyrailing · 09/11/2020 06:07

one family I know has put a narrow wardrobe by the front door. acts both as room divider and coat and shoe rack.

rottiemum88 · 09/11/2020 06:21

We have a hallway and a utility but apart from the coat and shoes DH keeps in the latter to walk the dogs on a morning/night, all our shoes and coats go in the wardrobes. Or in the garage for sports shoes. Is there any built in cupboard storage anywhere you could add a rail to?

HeronLanyon · 09/11/2020 06:30

Friend of mine has opened up that under stairs cupboard donor forms and alcove off hallway. Coat and shoe rack small filing cabinet (household stuff) put there.
I’ve vowed never to put coats/‘outdoor jackets’ in wardrobe after a bed bug experience a few years ago. Luckily I have a tiny lobby hallway where I quarantine hang them.

Dowermouse · 09/11/2020 06:35

House one: Hooks behind the front door, shoes in bedroom, except wellies by kitchen door. Yes, I wear my shoes in the ouse, even up stairs Shock
House two: I't does have a hall but too tight for hooks so coats in the understairs cupboard with the wellies, shoes upstairs.

NachoNachoMan · 09/11/2020 07:10

Maybe some of the houses you visited would normally have shoes in a heap by the door and coats flung over the banister, but have moved them before photos/viewing?

We leave our coats in the downstairs loo but I'm guessing not many terraces have one - but our shoes are in the hallway in a cube storage unit (IKEA one that looks to be discontinued - it's on legs and has a trim so looks a bit nicer than the kallax ones, and we've put in wicker baskets so not immediately obvious it's used for shoes) which I think would also look ok in a living room too.

CRbear · 09/11/2020 07:16

I don’t use the cupboard under the stairs for this as it’s too far from the door to be practical. My stairs run horizontally between the front and back rooms, so you walk through a stair wide hallway to go between them and I have coat hooks up in there. There are doors for both rooms so they can be hidden away. I have a tall cabinet next to the door with cube storage and I put shoes in those. I can vacuum them out if they get dirty but they don’t tend to. Really dirty outdoor / garden/walking shoes live by the back door.

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/11/2020 07:19

@Shmithecat2

Cupboard under the stairs?
I came on to say this. Obviously several other people have beaten me to it.
OhTheRoses · 09/11/2020 07:32

In our old house we had the cupboard under the stairs sectioned off: high back end became a full length cupboard, centre section was racked for shoes and other stuff, back end provided access to the meters. It cost quite a lot but was incredibly helpful - local carpenter did it for me and retained the original look of the woodwork. Fortunately there was a downstairs wc so under the stairs didn't have to be utilised for that.

Most loved room in this house is the boot room!

Iseeyoulookingatme · 09/11/2020 07:40

We have a shoe cupboard from IKEA in our dinning room and it just looks like a normal piece of furniture and holds a fair few pairs of shoes. I think it's the hemnes range.
We also have a coat rack at the bottom of the stairs and more coat hooks under the stairs. You have to get inventive with storage in terrace houses.

JoJoSM2 · 09/11/2020 07:42

I’d just put a wardrobe in the room. If it’s difficult to find space for a large one, Ikea do some that are 37cm deep and as little as 50cm wide. Still enough space for a bunch of coats and several pairs of shoes. With a bit more budget, you could get a carpenter to knock up sth useful and attractive.

Gladly · 09/11/2020 08:07

I also used an IKEA Hemnes shoe cabinet thing that just looked like a sideboardesque piece of furniture really - plant and a candle on top.
Coats went on hooks behind the front door, and in the wardrobe out of season.
You have to get used to not being able to have everything out of site.

AgreeableEagle · 09/11/2020 08:11

I can't answer the question myself, but I can recommend these as shoe storage Ikea unit. You can get lots of shoes in them.
