Terraces with no hallway or porch - where do you put your coats & shoes?

I'm looking to buy in an area where this is the norm - good size living room and dining/kitchen downstairs, and people either use front door straight to the lounge, or onl use the back entrabbe through kitchen.

Sometimes I can see coat hooks on kitchen door or a small shoe rack but in some of these houses there is no sign of coats / shoes (unless they hide it for viewings so it's more neat).

I always had a hall, be it in a flat or a house. I feel like it's an irritating issue but I'd love to know what do people do as possibly there is a simple solution?

We had a small alcove where you went through to kitchen. Originally had a Set of hooks for coats and shoes got chucked on the floor. It always looked messy so I got doors put on it and a wardrobe rail and it's great. It stores all coats then there is a box rash for shoes and then my dd eaxh have a box for school uniform. It's much easier to put it away there than decant it to laundry basket and then wardrobes just to come out again! It's basically size of a double wardrobe.

I've recently got a tall Mustard locker by the front door for coats and shoes, as nothing ever made it to the cupboard under the stairs. It's perfect and it looks super stylish as well.

I have coat hooks and a tiny space at the top of my cellar stairs (door off the kitchen, I use the kitchen door to enter the house) but that's always full of spiders so only tend to shove muddy running shoes in there. Coats and shoes are draped over kitchen chairs and abandoned randomly throughout the house put out of sight in my wardrobe Grin

Never particularly thought of wanting a hallway before I moved here but I miss not having that kind of space.

Our house is like this. It's a 3 storey Victorian terrace. As you say it's got good size kitchen and living space. For us the frot enttaroom is our dining room so we just have a coat stand next to the door and one of the ikea units with square holes and boxes for shoes.

I thought it might be annoying but actually it's nice to have a lot of room for getting out of the house.

Fischliweiss · 09/11/2020 09:11

Also I got some metal hair pin feet for the unit so it's a bit more stylish as we have other vintage firni so I wanted it to fit in.

Other suggestions are a long thin ish locker type thing or hooks in the back of the door.
Also in the winter we keep scarves etc in one of the boxes. So rember particularly for children's coats if you have them they don't need hanging up.

We have a virtual corridor from front door to dining room- the back of the sofa forms the "wall", then we have a coat rack and mirror on the wall adjoining next house, with shoes underneath. Long term shoes go in a pull out drawer under my bed, but ones in daily use are downstairs. I think putting wet shoes/coats in the understairs cupboard would lead to damp, so I only hang thoroughly dried/aired coats in there on the back of the door.

We have coat hooks and a shoe rack at the bottom of the stairs. More hooks over the back of the kitchen door. What usually actually happens is coats hang on the back of the kitchen chairs and DD dumps her shoes under the table.

Previous house, a sofa was used to separate the front door space from the rest of the downstairs. All shoes lived under/behind that sofa, and coats were dumped on the back of it or hung on the banister post at the bottom of the stairs (which the cat decided made an excellent bed!).

Thank you so much for many replies, and the various ideas!
I think these terraces lack understairs cupboards because there is always a cellar, and stairs run horizontally between rooms like one poster mentioned.

pink that's interesting a slim narrowish wardrobe could form a bit of a cosy space by the door, even though may look a bit odd from the other end of room.

The poster on prev page who has the mustard locker - do you mean a very narrow one? I thikn need to be a double. Buy where do you get a stylish one?

Fischlithe problem with many of these houses is that the back door opens straight into a off-ashot kitchen which is too small as it is without putting any racks in, then there is largge dining room, so as other pp said probably best to put a shoe storage box that doesn't look like one, but still a problem with coats.
I wouldn't put coats in the kitchen partly because they would absorb cooking smells - so would need a locker of sorts in dining or living room.

Thank you for IKEA suggestions - the shoe rack link is useful, white would look odd in living room but should work in dining kitchen.

My terraced is tiny, I don’t have a cupboard under the stairs. I just hang the coats I use daily on my door and shoes by the front door

HerRoyalNotness · 10/11/2020 02:57

Could you get drawers put into
The stair treads, or a pull out on the side of the stairs. Like these. The one with the red shoes is the tread hinged to open

Stairs are in the middle of my house, between front room and kitchen. We have some coat hooks at the bottom of the stairs, and shoes by the back door. We don't have a cupboard under the stairs, as it's the entrance to the cellar. I hang waterproof coats at the top of the cellar steps, which helps keep things tidy. I rotate summer/winter coats and shoes, so there aren't too many out at the same time.

CatAndHisKit · 10/11/2020 20:18

HerRoyalNot ooh clever! I wonder how to do this without damaging stair structure - would a joiner do this?

Just seen an example on rightmove - as you come into the (big) kitchen, there is a short white shelf high up near the door with shoes on it Shock !
Mens walking shoes etc dispayed as if they are ornaments - hmm!

Thomas yes I do see some coats on top of cellar entrance - and I think it's the only way for anything bulky, though don't they absorb the damp smell from cellar?
