We're about to go on the market and wanting more space we are currently in a 2 bed 1 reception 1 bathroom house and have 2 children and 2 dogs, how much space do you all have in similar situations and is it enough/more than enough obviously we would like another bedroom but is a 2nd reception room/conservatory/ utility room etc needed too really?

OP posts:

2 adults, 1 7yo.
3 beds and a bathroom upstairs.
Ground floor has living room, kitchen/dining room and conservatory.
Basement has playroom, bedroom and bathroom.
The large upstairs bedroom is currently our office.

We moved from a 2 reception, 2 bedroom when DS was 2.

pumkinpopsickle · 04/11/2020 07:40

DH, myself and 1 toddler:

Currently in a 4 bed, 2 bath, 2 reception, wc, kitchen, utility and small garden.

We have been so happy here, but are moving to:

6 bed, 2 bath, 2 reception, wc, kitchen diner and utility. It's a bigger house with a larger footprint/garden, driveway and garage.

Writing it down makes it sound excessive but we both work from home and have elderly parents stay regularly so have outgrown our current house quickly. We are planning another baby soon so the new house will be filled quickly!

sunshineandshowers21 · 04/11/2020 07:48

downstairs - kitchen, dining room, play room, living room, toilet.

upstairs - bathroom, four bedrooms (one with en-suite).

it was originally a three bed but we extended to add a bedroom and playroom. probably going to extend again to add another bedroom and an office. there’s me, my partner, 4 kids.

tywysoges · 04/11/2020 08:05

2 adults, 1 child, 2 cats:

Downstairs: Lounge, kitchen/diner/family room, cloakroom and utility.

Upstairs: 4 double bedrooms - one en-suite - and family bathroom. One of the rooms is used as an office/study/library type of space. We will go into the loft at some point.

I don’t think the extras you mention are needed, but I personally wouldn’t want to be without a utility room again. Having my laundry away from cooking is brilliant, plus a place to dry things, hide the folded clothes until they make their way upstairs, extra cupboards that we use as a pantry... I love mine.

endoflevelbaddy · 04/11/2020 08:36

We're also a family of 4, with 2 dogs and a cat.
We've just moved into our (hopefully) final family home and have gained a lot of space (although refurbing it so managing in about 1/2 at the minute Grin).

We have 3 reception rooms, kitchen, large hall, downstairs loo, boot / coat room and soon to be large utility. Upstairs 5 beds and 2 bathrooms.

We were fine in the 4 bed townhouse we moved from - 1 reception and a kitchen dinner. It had 3 bathrooms though which really helped with a houseful of girls Wink

PeachandBee · 04/11/2020 09:56

2 adults, 3 children 10, 3 & 1. No animals.

We have just moved from a 2.5 bedroom, lounge/diner and 1.5 bathroom house to 5 bed, 2 living rooms, 2.5 bathrooms, kitchen/diner and utility with garage and workshop.

Honestly, we knew we had outgrown the old house but until we came here we weren't fully realising just how vital the extra space is.

rhowton · 04/11/2020 10:34

We've moved from

Downstairs: living room, kitchen/dinning room and utility.
Upstairs: three bedrooms (one box room) and a bathroom.

Moved to:

Downstairs: living room, playroom, study, kitchen, dining room, downstairs loo and double garage.
Upstairs: 3 double rooms, one single, en-suite and family bathroom.

Family of 4 with a 3 year old and 1 year old.

Bickles · 04/11/2020 10:37

3 people, 2 cats. 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 reception.
It is definitely big enough.

isseywith4vampirecats · 04/11/2020 13:40

front room and kitchen downstairs,
2 double bedrooms and bathroom upstairs
2 people

LadyCatStark · 04/11/2020 14:14

There’s 3 of us and we have a lounge, dining room, kitchen diner, utility room, downstairs toilet and office downstairs. 4 bedrooms, an en-suite and a family bathroom on the first floor and a master bedroom and en-suite on the top floor.

I think our downstairs space is perfect but we don’t really need all 5 bedrooms or the family bathroom.

TurquoiseDress · 04/11/2020 16:38

2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, small kitchen & living room.

2 adults & 2 young children

We have a small garden which is overlooked on all sides- live in a row of terraces and terraces after the garden at the back

Hopefully (if it doesn't all go tits up) will be moving into a 2 bedroom ground floor maisonette with a garden

Not an improvement on the number of bedrooms, but at least we will have a mortgage with a monthly payment which is cheaper than the rent we pay now (Zone 5 SE London)

gemandjule · 04/11/2020 17:23

Our numbers are fluid! Basically myself, DH and 4 kids but these kids are now 26 to 19. Eldest has moved in and out over the years but now living with girlfriend and unlikely to move back. DS2 is just finished university. Has moved back with his girlfriend as ended up finishing university on line due to lockdown. Now they are planning to move out in the next few weeks. DD1 is at home and her BF is staying due to lockdown but he doesn’t normally live here. I’d say she will move out to live with friends in the next 6 months as she is starting a career job after Christmas. DD2 is at university abroad so technically still lives here. 2 dogs and one cat
5 double bedrooms, 2 en-suite. 2 other bathrooms. Kitchen/dining room with living room off same. Sitting room. Study. Utility room. Lots of space but have been up to 9 adults here over past few months so can feel a lot smaller. Will probably look at downsizing in a few years when I can be confident they are gone for good 😀😀

waitrosetrollydolly · 04/11/2020 18:35

13 rooms and two out houses, four garage bays and a stable / yard for equestrian contingent.
Three of us humans, 2 dogs, 2 horses and 3 polo ponies live here.

Shadowboy · 04/11/2020 18:35

We have 2 kids, 1 dog, 2 adults.

Downstairs:
Lounge, kitchen diner (18foot) home office, utility and separate cloak room

Upstairs:
Master with en-suite, 2 further doubles and a single. Family bathroom.
Detached garage.

Mintjulia · 04/11/2020 18:43

4bed, 2 reception, kitchen, one bath, downstairs loo playroom, utility for 1 adult, 1 child.

It was bought for 2 adults, two older teens, one child but relationship broke down so here we are.

DS was already in school so I can only move locally until he's 18, and it's cheaper to stay put. And try not to think about the council tax/heating bills.

ISeeTheLight · 04/11/2020 18:49

We have a big house- we live in a cheap part of the country but with London jobs (and pay level). We also both work from home and bought this house specifically so we could each have an office. Family abroad too so needed a guest room for them to come and stay.

Downstairs:
Lounge 6x5m
Kitchen-diner-family room 10x4m
DP office 3x3m
Utility room 2x1m
Toilet

Upstairs
5 bedrooms (incl one guest room and my office), 2 ensuites
1 family bathroom

Theres a separate detached double garage.

It's big considering there's only 3 of us but I couldn't work from home and not have separate space for that. DP also really wanted a separate lounge and I wanted open plan, so we have both. Appreciate we're very fortunate.

Infamy · 04/11/2020 18:52

2 adults, 2 children, 2 cats, 2 dogs

Downstairs : kitchen diner, sitting room, back room (study/ playroom)

Upstairs: small bedroom used as office, three double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms.

Perfect! If we have visitors, we give up our room and bunk up with the kids.

I discourage visitors! Grin

CanICelebrate · 04/11/2020 18:55

12 rooms.
4 bed, 1 study, 2 bath, 1wc, 1 kitchen/diner, living room, utility room, playroom.

2 adults, 2 teenagers, 1 younger child, 1 cat and 1 dog.

It sounds bigger than it is though as 2 of the bedrooms and the study are small.

thegcatsmother · 04/11/2020 19:54

We have a cellar, (Dh's workshop/man cave); then kitchen/diner, sitting room, snug, study, downstairs loo and futility room on the ground floor. First floor, 4 double bedrooms (proper doubles), upstairs loo, a bathroom with double sinks, walk in shower, freestanding roll topped, claw footed bath, double floor to ceiling airing cupboards, and still room for a couple of chairs if we wanted!! Second floor, attic space and polyvalent room, which will be my sewing room once sorted.

Outside, a new curved carport for Dh's pride and joy, and two patios. Off street parking for at least two cars.

We have quite a lot of house and not much garden, which suits me.

We are a family of dh and I, plus 25 year old ds, whom we can't seem to encourage to leave home, and the feline overlord.

itbemay1 · 04/11/2020 19:55

Four of us
2 receptions
Breakfast room
Kitchen
Bathroom
3 beds

MeMeMeYou · 04/11/2020 19:59

Kids age 6 and 12. Used to have 4 bed (1 a box room) but downstairs v small living room plus a kitchen diner, and a long garden. The downstairs was overrun with toys as 6yo had the box room. The space didn’t work well.

Now have 4 beds but none too small, 2 living rooms, small dining room and small kitchen. More than enough space. The kids don’t use their living room as their bedrooms are big enough so it might be repurposed (currently seem to dry washing in there as kitchen is small). Smaller garden than before but kids don’t go in it much they prefer the park.

MeMeMeYou · 04/11/2020 20:00

Downstairs loo and 2 bathrooms. The downstairs loo has been really great. 6 yo struggled when potty training with upstairs loo.

LBOCS2 · 04/11/2020 21:54

Two adults, two children here full time, DSS EOW/most holidays.

Downstairs:
Living room
Playroom
Kitchen-diner
WC
Utility
Conservatory

1st floor:
Master bed with en-suite and walk in wardrobe
3 further doubles
Bathroom
WC

2nd floor:
Really crap loft conversion. Not fit for purpose, currently used as storage. On the 5 year plan 😁

Sexnotgender · 04/11/2020 21:59

2 adults
1 teenager
1 toddler
Pregnant (me)
2 dogs
2 cats

4 bedrooms
2 sitting rooms
Dining room
Study
Bathroom
Kitchen
Toilet

It’s fine, I’d like another bathroom though.

garlictwist · 05/11/2020 06:30

We live in a back to back terrace - so one room downstairs (combined kitchen and lounge), bedroom and bathroom on the first floor and second bedroom in the attic. No hallways.
