We're about to go on the market and wanting more space we are currently in a 2 bed 1 reception 1 bathroom house and have 2 children and 2 dogs, how much space do you all have in similar situations and is it enough/more than enough obviously we would like another bedroom but is a 2nd reception room/conservatory/ utility room etc needed too really?

Downstairs: large hall, kitchen diner, lounge, utility, study and toilet.

Upstairs: 4 double bedrooms, 1 bathroom and 1 en-suite.

Our forever home would probably have a larger kitchen diner and another 1-2 reception rooms on top of what we have. I’d love a bigger utility and 5 double bedrooms with another en-suite.

Ylvamoon · 03/11/2020 22:46

We are 2adults 2DC and 3 dogs.
Upstairs: 3 bedrooms , 1 box room which we use as guest room and 2 bathrooms.
Downstairs: front room which is also my library & office, kitchen family room, garden room, utility room, WC and a small TV room.

Sounds big on paper, but honestly it's a small late 1980's semi!!

Me, DH, DD (7) DS (2) DS (1)

Currently downstairs -
Lounge, playroom, kitchen diner, utility room, toilet
Upstairs-
Bathroom, 4 bedrooms

Moving to -
Lounge, playroom, utility, toilet, large kitchen diner, snug

5 beds, 2 en suites & bathroom

Needed the extra space for a study/office & wanted an en-suite and an en-suite for DD as she will soon be a teenager with 2 younger brothers so wanted her to have privacy.

pumpkinpie01 · 03/11/2020 22:52

We are 3 adults and child and another adult when home from uni. Downstairs lounge , reception room , kitchen & dining room. Upstairs 4 bedrooms plus loft that's used as a bedroom but not done out to building regs , bathroom and our ensuite. Don't know what to do when the 2 adult dc have left home properly as house will be too big but been here that long I can't imagine moving .

Bouledeneige · 03/11/2020 22:58

I'm about to downsize as I occupy the former family home bought before divorce.

We currently have a terraced house with 2 receptions, kitchen/diner, 4 bedrooms and one bathroom.

Planning to move to a ground floor and basement flat with one through living room/dining room, 3 bedrooms, one kitchen, one bathroom and one ensuite. Can't wait, its beautiful.

NoSquirrels · 03/11/2020 22:58

I think it’s less about absolute number of rooms and more about layout in living spaces?

We have a big living room, a study, and an open-plan kitchen-diner downstairs. That’s plenty, and great, but the layout of the kitchen-diner, stairs, doors into other spaces isn’t ideal and so less flexible than it might be.

So look carefully at how you might imagine using the living spaces. Maybe a separate dining room/snug is more useful than a bigger living room and kitchen etc.

6 of us in our house. Me, dh, 4 children aged 6-15 years. We have an office, downstairs loo, playroom, utility and man cave on lower floor. Lounge, kitchen diner on first floor with front balcony and 1 bedroom. Top floor, 4 bedrooms one bathroom and en-suite. Lots of space but a pig to clean!

FenellaVelour · 03/11/2020 23:00

Three bed house over three floors with attic conversion and extension.

Ground floor - large lounge, large kitchen diner, utility room, toilet, garden room.

First floor - two double bedrooms, family bathroom

Second floor - double attic bedroom with eaves storage

Garden and roof terrace outside.

Me, husband, four cats.

MrsT1983 · 03/11/2020 23:02

Me, DH and 2 toddlers.
Current (rented) house: Downstairs- Lounge, dining room, kitchen. Upstairs- 2 double and 1 single bedroom, en-suite and small main bathroom. It’s a pokey new build with no storage.

Just bought and moving into: Downstairs- Lounge, playroom, big kitchen diner, utility, WC. Upstairs- 2 double bedrooms, single bedroom and big bathroom, massive loft bedroom.

I can’t wait to have more space. A big plus for me also was all the built in storage in the new house, everything will finally have a home!

MotherPiglet · 03/11/2020 23:04

Me, DH, 2yo, baby due next year

Downstairs - porch, decent sized hallway, downstairs toilet, large front room, open plan kitchen/living area, rear porch, utility room

Upstairs - bathroom, office with ensuite, playroom, master bedroom with ensuite, 2 x bedrooms

Plenty of room for us plus more. Big garden too which my 2yo loves in the summer

IndieTara · 03/11/2020 23:19

Me, DD and Ddog. We have living room, kitchen, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. It's tiny

Demithemoore · 03/11/2020 23:21

Same size family.

Kitchen diner/ family room

4 receptions and utility

4 beds 3 bathrooms

We use the kitchen, sitting room and sometimes the snug - other rooms are nice but never lived in. We were in a tiny cottage before and I preferred it, less cleaning and much cosier!

BigGlasses · 03/11/2020 23:32

Not me ( I have 4 kids) but friend with 2 kids lived in a house with:

Upstairs 2 decent bedrooms, one small bedroom, bathroom
Downstairs hall, living room, kitchen dining, cloakroom

She has recently moved to a larger house and she says that the extra room downstairs she now has is invaluable. It’s saved her sanity. In the smaller house if her dh was watching the Grand Prix there was just nowhere to escape to apart to sit on her bed. Obviously it’s not essential, but some sort of second living space is wonderful, even if it’s a chair with reading lamp type nook on the landing or alcove

Megan2018 · 03/11/2020 23:45

2 adults 1DD
We have 3 large double bedrooms (2 have Superking beds plus wardrobes and desk space), reasonably large kitchen/diner/family room, cosy sitting room, laundry room/utility and loo plus large hallway.
Tiny ensuite which is only used by guests and a fair sized bathroom with big walk in shower and separate bath. Ridiculously large driveway that can park 6-8 cars (we plan to eventually decrease drive and increase garden).

I’d love a 4th bed, bigger ensuite, boot room and a separate playroom. But we have more than enough really. It’s just under 150sqm

friendlycat · 04/11/2020 00:42

It’s all relative. We have a family size house 2 adults only. Still could do with more space:
Decent entrance hall with downstairs loo
Double sized sitting room across the whole front of house
Utility
Large kitchen with very large dining space / combined extra reception room
4 bedrooms - 2 doubles and 2 generous singles
2 bathrooms
Front drive
Back garden with massive shed

But I still would like a bigger utility room and at least one of the single bedrooms to be a third double.

My first flat would have virtually fitted into my kitchen diner. My second flat was about the size of the current ground floor. The last house was 2/3rds the size of this house.

This property is the biggest and best but you see I still want more in terms of utility space (never had one before) and would love at least one of the bedrooms to be bigger.

Ohtannenbaumohtannenbaum · 04/11/2020 00:46

Me and my DH, ttc our first

Downstairs: living room, kitchen diner, downstairs loo
Upstairs: 4 bedrooms, bathroom, ensuite

elQuintoConyo · 04/11/2020 07:05

Mine posted twice! But i forgot to mention we are two adults and one child under 10, and medium sized dog..

AlwaysLatte · 04/11/2020 07:10

4 bed, 4 reception, 3 bath and a large separate annexe with large reception room, bath and bed (used as an office).
One thing I've found about extra reception rooms is that it comes in very handy when children become loud teens - good for them to have a bit of their own space!

tissueboxx · 04/11/2020 07:16

2 adults, 2 dc.

Downstairs kitchen diner utitlity, living room, conservatory, playroom, downstairs wc

Upstairs 4 beds, 3 bathrooms

We have comfortable space, could do 1 less bathroom and bedroom and not have playroom but wouldn't want to especially now we're all at home all the time.

AuntieMarys · 04/11/2020 07:17

Lounge, kitchen/lounge/ dining room, utility, 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms.
Bought it just for the 2 of us.
