Dishwasher and utility room ?

cheesecake864 · 02/11/2020 08:57

We are just designing a new kitchen and looking at flooring options.

It's going to be in a space of approx 10.5 m x 5.5 m with one corner a utility room.

The dishwasher is currently in the kitchen in the new design

But we are looking at flooring options and think we will go for engineered or laminate wood, and last time we did the kitchen the washing machine was leaking and ruined the laminate which we couldn't afford to replace due to the amount needed so this time we are worried about buying new flooring and leaks and wondering whether we should put the dishwasher in the utility room or whether this is a stupid idea? The other advantage is the noise as it will be quieter and so less noisy in an open plan living space ?

Utility room will probably have vinyl or cheaper laminate.

Has anyone put there dishwasher in the utility ? Thanks

I think loading & unloading the dishwasher from/to the kitchen would drive me nuts. Far too much walking about.

Roselilly36 · 02/11/2020 08:59

It would be a total nuisance to have a dishwasher in a utility room, a dishwasher needs to be next to the kitchen sink IMHO.

Sexnotgender · 02/11/2020 08:59

I agree with the above.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 02/11/2020 08:59

Personally I think it will really piss you off long term having a dishwasher in the utility room. Imagine loading and unloading it daily. So it's a no from me.

jomaIone · 02/11/2020 09:01

My kitchen is a big L shape and the dishwasher is at the top of the L, and cupboards are at the end of the L, and that is annoying enough never mind in a whole different room!

PickAChew · 02/11/2020 09:08

It's a complete pain having your dishwasher in another room unless you're sturdy enough to carry the full racks into the kitchen to unload.

Anything could ruin laminate or engineered flooring. You need to get the unfinished stuff and seal it well with multiple layers of polyurethane varnish so that water and grease can't penetrate the gaps between boards and even then, be prepared to regularly top it up.

dudsville · 02/11/2020 09:11

Whilst I agree with the other posters I think I could really go for this idea. You could get a nice tray and load it up to transfer to and from the dishwasher.

MindyStClaire · 02/11/2020 09:17

Yeah I wouldn't want the dishwasher far away from the sink, cooking areas and presses.

I also wouldn't want any flooring in a kitchen that can't get wet. Even if you have no appliances, you'll still have a sink and cooking splashes, spilled drinks etc. What about a wood effect tile or something?

user1471505356 · 02/11/2020 09:18

they are also fairly quiet.

Simonsaysitschristmas · 02/11/2020 09:20

We have dishwasher in utility and it’s absolutely fine.

cheesecake864 · 02/11/2020 09:21

Just to clarify - it would be next to the sink in the utility ?

I get the walking is a hassle but the kitchen is not that big Smile

I guess apart from the flooring and leaks, i think it would be good to have the mess and noise behind a closed door but that's because it's an open plan kitchen living room so we will be more aware of the mess and clutter

It drove me mad having the fridge in the utility and I would expect a dishwasher to be similarly annoying. Imagine yourself making meals, cups of tea, packing lunch boxes, tidying up after meals. How much extra hassle would it add to have the DW in the utility? What about emptying it? Ideally you'd want the plates, glasses and cups stored as close to the DW as possible. It's not for me. You could even try it out by washing up in the utility for a few days, or stacking dirty dishes out there if you don't yet have a sink.

Elieza · 02/11/2020 09:33

Perhaps it would be easier to fit the dishwasher in the kitchen but drag it out every so often to check for leaks? Say every six months or annually? Keep an extra box of flooring in the garage in case you need to repair a bit? It shouldn’t leak if it’s been fitted properly and pipes are tight.

Loofah01 · 02/11/2020 09:36

Not for me. The extra effort in loading / unloading would be too painful!

Just make sure you buy a quiet dishwasher. My last was a Bosch which was almost silent, the one I have at the moment is AEG and pretty noisy by comparison. Run it at night before you go to bed and it's not a problem anyway

ivfbeenbusy · 02/11/2020 09:36

Our dishwasher and washing machine are in the utility for this reason. Kitchen is timber floor utility is tiled with tiled skirtings and the appliances are freestanding

Personally I dislike DW In the kitchen - they take up space, cause damage when leak, expensive and nightmare to replace when they are integrated and if you have a large kitchen with seating which is a sociable area why would you want the DW chugging away in the background

It's a 2 second walk between the utility and the kitchen cupboards - doesn't bother us

nnnnumpty · 02/11/2020 09:41

My dishwasher is in my open plan kitchen living room, noise not an issue, also have oak flooring throughout and again not an issue , haven't got a utility in this property but definitely would not put a dishwasher in It, it needs to be in a kitchen where it can be used easily imho

anxiousanxiety · 02/11/2020 09:43

Dishwasher in kitchen definitely and claim on insurance if you have a leak!

MaidenMotherCrone · 02/11/2020 09:45

I have one in the kitchen and one in the utility for overflow Grin. If I didn't have the one in the kitchen it would indeed drive me nuts going back and forth. If I had to choose between one in the utility or none at all I'd not be complaining about getting some extra steps in during a 5 min job.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/11/2020 09:48

Three houses ago the dishwasher washer was in the utility, along with the washing machine and tumble dryer. It was never an issue. It was 10seconds extra walk. It was further from the dining room to the kitchen. It worked well in a way, as there was a place to put the dirty plates when the dishwasher was on without clogging up the cooking space.
Sort of miss that house... It had a brilliant pantry as well. (And a cupboard upstairs bigger than what same new builds declare a bedroom!)

bilbodog · 02/11/2020 09:54

My dishwasher is in my utility room - no problem with it there!

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/11/2020 09:59

On a separate point don't put laminate in a kitchen. Laminate is a photo of wood on top of fibre board. It is not hard wearing enough for kitchens where you might get a water spillage, even the commercial stuff.

Engineered wood is completely different. It is a thin layer of real wood on top of layers of chipboard etc. It is more stable than wood which is just solid planks since solid wood expands and contracts with weather/humidity levels. Engineered wood is fine for kitchens.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 02/11/2020 10:00

How noisy is your dishwasher that you’re worried about the noise?

Our bog standard Smeg model is so quiet I constantly think it’s finished and open it mid cycle!

Having it in the utility would drive me nuts- I like to clean as I go when I’m cooking so running in between rooms needlessly would just piss me off.

FurierTransform · 02/11/2020 10:27

Keep it in the kitchen - it would be far too annoying in the utility!
In a space that big, a good quality dishwasher will be near enough inaudible.
Also, 'fake' wood is really good now. I had a sample floating around somewhere - sorry, can't remember the name, but it's a printed wood effect on a grey bendy plastic-like thin board.

Smileymoo · 02/11/2020 10:28

I too couldn't bear having the dishwasher in the utility room. In fact, when we got our kitchen re-fitted, I purposefully put it as close to the cutlery drawer and dishes cupboard as possible. We bought a quiet dishwasher so it makes v little noise when on and anyway, it's mainly on at night-time.

RJnomore1 · 02/11/2020 10:29

We were advised to go for lvt in the kitchen and im really glad we did. Definitely don’t use laminate. And only put the dishwasher in the utility if you like extra work!
