Renovating during new November lockdown?

Boonlark · 31/10/2020 21:28

Anyone else going to be trying to renovate during this new lockdown? Just got into the house, ripped the kitchen out today.

On Thursday the electrician comes for the rewire, and the heating people are coming to cap off the gas heater and disconnect the radiators...I hope!

I’ve got a kitchen full of worktops, a sink, taps etc etc and builders lined up to start midweek, I’ve got no idea whether they can start and now have visions of Christmas dinner on trays on our laps in the living room 😂

Boonlark · 31/10/2020 21:45

Oh...I hadn't thought about Christmas Shock

I’m also curious what they will do. If they will say to people it’s your choice, or down tools again.

VelociraptorRex · 31/10/2020 21:47

Yup, we're in the same boat, we've got no windows and they're due to be fitted in a couple of weeks. Apparently construction can continue, and if you can't work from home (which builders can't...) you can still carry on, but it a bit stressful now.

SuperFairy · 31/10/2020 21:51

I’m hoping that we are all going to be okay, surely getting houses fit for habitation i.e. windows, kitchens and bathrooms is essential work.

Our builders can be sealed off with the kitchen door closed and kitchen doors and windows open and they can just get on with it with no mixing with us in the rest of the house. Hopefully others in the same boat can do the same

Unless you're planning on doing everything yourself, all I can say is good luck! Tradesmen are currently either incredibly busy or not working.

We have all said that our tradespeople are lined up to work next week so not sure what relevance your point has? 🤷‍♂️

Wanted to get some carpet fitted next month Wink not sure it’ll happen

isseywith4vampirecats · 31/10/2020 22:09

planning on redecorating the front room we have the wallpaper going to get some paint and paste on monday

ktsc89 · 31/10/2020 22:10

Builders will still need to work. It's more the supply chain that's the issue. We're half way through renovating... kitchen ordered and due in a month. Wonder whether the kitchen showroom being closed (do we assume it would be?) will have a knock on effect on delivering the items?

Manufacturing continues, the show room isn’t relevant, so no it shouldn’t impact..
Boonlark · 31/10/2020 22:18

Thankfully I just had the new kitchen units delivered this morning. They're safely stored away until it's time to fit it. I chose Howdens because I was worried about possible lockdown and delivery times, and they keep stuff in stock.

I most worried about the double glazing. It's due to be installed towards the end of the month and I'm not confident it'll be ready

They said manufacturing and building can continue , you may still get some builders who may stop and i guess they may have some customers who also will now cancel , but would imagine many will continue but best to phone on monday and ask
I actually wonder if anyone will go back to wfh who has gone in office as most are still wfh anyway unless they couldnt do it at home and needed to be in the office

UnconsideredTrifles · 01/11/2020 08:05

DH has kept building through the Welsh lockdown, which I assume follows similar rules. Materials are still being delivered, and Toolstation does click and collect s

UnconsideredTrifles · 01/11/2020 08:06

...o you should be fine!

(My phone, however, is clearly not fine!)

Maybenexttime08 · 01/11/2020 08:28

I'm hoping building is fine and most importantly building control for sign off of a new build!

Boonlark · 01/11/2020 08:48

Oh that's good to know that it's been fine during the Welsh lockdown. Here's hoping!

We are in the same boat a half way through an extension and expecting delivery of windows mid Nov and need roofer, plumber, electrician etc - work is all planned for Nov and kitchen delivery expected early December.

Now we have no idea what is going to happen!!!

SollaSollew · 01/11/2020 11:11

Similar here. Our builder was putting our steel in yesterday ready for building control on Monday. He said he expects to carry on working as will all the other trades he has spoken to. We had our kitchen delivered at the end of last week and is now being stored till building work is finished and we have basically everything else already so should be ok.
My only worry is worktops as I’ve chosen them and paid the deposit but am not sure they’ll be able to come round to template and fit as they only do worktops which I’m guessing you couldn’t call essential. Am going to give them a call in the morning and see what they say.
We ordered our kitchen unit paint and oil yesterday as I was worried about supply and that should be ready to collect on Monday/Tuesday.
I am now racking my brains for anything we might have forgotten to order to finish the kitchen project, not sure where we’d store anything it if I do remember anything though!

SollaSollew · 01/11/2020 11:12

Also just to say we’re using a private building control company so that might be an option for anyone whose council ones shut down.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/11/2020 11:16

Our builder was scheduled to renovate our downstairs loo in April. All the units and sanitary ware have been sitting in our garage since then. He is currently due to start a week tomorrow. We are waiting to hear from him......

Zebrahooves · 01/11/2020 18:46

We are mid renovation and have worked our socks off to do as much as we have. The electrician has done all of the internal jobs and we are having carpets fitted next week. We got the rest of our decorating stuff yesterday as we expected to be told that we were going into lockdown.

Ours is a small renovation job though compared to some on here.

SecretOfChange · 02/11/2020 13:30

I'm half way through a full renovation so obviously carrying on unless I'm told I can't. Ordered bathrooms some time ago. Need to order kitchen appliances, blinds and lights/fittings still.

Bluntness100 · 02/11/2020 13:41

The gov website says people can continue to work, inc in other peoples homes, so I assume unless a work man or client takes personal issue any planned work should go ahead. If it does not it’s about the individuals and not about this lock down.

FenellaVelour · 02/11/2020 19:31

We were due to have a new roof on our sunroom done last week after a three month wait (it’s leaking terribly in three places now) but the company made a big cock up and brought the wrong materials with them so they couldn’t do the work. They’ve rebooked us for mid November. I will be hopping if it doesn’t go ahead, but not much we can do about it.
