Are your internal doors

a) stripped & varnished/waxed or
b) painted?

Can't decide what to go for, so am being nosey. Thanks!

Brass knobs definately.

What are bee-hive knobs? Can you post a linky please?

I am trying to prise an answer out of DH about his preference for the stripped or painted, but he's not very forthcoming!

I LOVE those! In fact, they would look nice with our re-claimed, re-stored and painted doors!

Tinker · 14/10/2007 20:03

My last house was Victorian and doors were stripped and waxed - which I like. But agree, think the Victorians would have thought we were mad and would have wanted them painted

thetryingistrying · 14/10/2007 20:08

edwardian - they are stripped but we are painting them.

fishie · 14/10/2007 20:10

we have 3 absent doors, 2 painted and one stripped. and two outside doors in the kitchen (one each end) you can still see letterbox on one of them. our house has about two original features (1880). both our loos are unheated though so that's authentic!

Isababel · 14/10/2007 20:10

Mine are originals and are stripped and waxed. (Victorian house) and in a serious need of a rewaxing!

ScaryScienceT · 14/10/2007 20:13

Our house is 1820s, with Edwardian doors. They are all natural wood.

I would personally prefer them to be painted white, but am keeping with the architecture of the house.

ScaryScienceT · 14/10/2007 20:15

We have brass lever handles.

jalopy · 14/10/2007 20:18

Edwardian house with original doors.
Painted.

Mercy · 14/10/2007 20:20

Chippy, if you want to go for the authentic look I would suggest you look at websites called Victorian house, period property, dulux heritage colours, farrow and ball etc etc

Sorry haven't go time to do links atm.Have you tried salvage yards rather than ebay? They used to be great but can imagine they are now ott price wise - but you never know!

wheelybug · 14/10/2007 20:22

downstairs stripped and waxed and I'd imagine original. First floor mix of original and replacement but all painted. Top floor new pannelled doors(as loft was converted) so painted. House is Victorian

ChippyMinton · 14/10/2007 20:27

Thanks Mercy, will have a google

Do I use eggshell paint? In a broken white I suppose?

I picked up a door quite cheaply from ebay, but some others i had my eye on went for silly money. Someone recommended a salvage yard in Wimbledon, so am going to try them next week. Need two decent doors because they are for the reception rooms.

victorian house. painted half glazed doors with a variety of fifties-tastic obscured glass. love em. but i suspect this isn't the kind of look you're after

Bumperlicious · 14/10/2007 20:32

Georgian, painted but with awful modern brass effect handles.

nospeak · 14/10/2007 20:33

Door between the living room and kitchen is waxed with a half glass panel. The other doors are all painted white

ChippyMinton · 14/10/2007 20:33

PD we have a similar look and ..erm...it has to go. We have at least 10 differnt textured wallpapers (all painted cream thank goodness), a tongue & groove feature wall in the fornt room, some groovy 70s light fittings, an 80s bathroom, a 50s kitchen (which is very cool in a retro way!)

At least we will have 1900s doors when i've done this LOL

Painted, white, same as walls. Doors have mouldings as do walls (lots and lots) and we have parquet floors throughout, so all white walls and doors looks much better in contrast with natural wood colours floors.

Anna8888 · 14/10/2007 20:38

Matt.

Gobbledispook · 14/10/2007 20:39

Painted panelled doors here.

puppydavies · 14/10/2007 20:40

heh we actually stole a door from outside someone's house to complete our set and we have the original 50s kitchen wall units too, the slopey ones, they really are cool.

ChippyMinton · 14/10/2007 20:42

We have those cupboards too PD . I cracked one of the glass doors though

Nbg · 14/10/2007 20:42

We're in a 200 year old cottage and the doors and stripped.

puppydavies · 14/10/2007 20:44

bet you could replace them through salvo web or whatever it's called. have been browsing around there to find some original base units to complete the look but not found quite what i'm after yet.
