What’s a reasonable price for window cleaning

Have never had this done professionally. I asked for a quote and instead of that, they sent someone round to do it. I haven’t been invoiced yet. It’s a small terraced house with a largish kitchen window, 2 large bedroom windows, one small bedroom window and a patio type window at the back, about 3 m wide and 2 m high. A ball park figure would be great. It’s in the south east ( Kent). Thanks!

I had my windows cleaned inside by the window cleaner when I moved in here, I think the price is reasonable, as others said, it takes a lot longer to clean inside than out.

JoJoSM2 · 21/10/2020 07:38

I think it’s only fair that the new tenant gets clean windows at the start of tenancy. I agree it takes a while to do the inside. Also agree that the cleaners should have got back to you with a quote.

However, it’s just a low paid job, that they probably just get on with it. It’s not like a builder who’d spend the same amount of time in a property doing a small repair but charge £200-300 . It’s only £50.

Ok guys thanks for helping me get this in perspective.

Absolute rip off merchants to proceed without your say so.

We pay £10 for the outside but up to £25 is probably ok as a one off. A professional cleaner would do the inside in an hour, say £15. I think £50 is too much. Also check with your tenants whether they actually did the inside.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/10/2020 18:15

I would say to them that I'm still waiting for the quote, and one from another company before you select one.

If they took an instruction from a tenant that's a contract between them.

One must hope your tenant doesn't get it re-roofed on your behalf.

UK prices are astonishingly low... we were quoted $7 PER PANE (not per window) with a minimum charge of $200.

SJaneS48 · 21/10/2020 18:41

Also Kent - £15 if we agree to a monthly clean (attached 3 bed) and £20 for a one off. If you do go to a regular arrangement, ask them to knock on the door and check it’s ok before they start on the offchance you don’t have the £15 on you or the time to pop to a cash point.

SJaneS48 · 21/10/2020 18:44

@CanadianJohn, window cleaning here usually takes 10-20 minutes and involves squirting water over a window via a pole system. It’s not a huge job!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/10/2020 19:13

@CanadianJohn

Prices are relative to income.

We British are all very poor over here. As an illustration of that there is a long waiting list to get Dick Van Dyke to clean our chimneys now we have been stopped from sending our children up - just to earn a bob or two...

I’ve actually never had my own home’s windows cleaned. They’re all smudged and I put up with it without a moments thought. Hence I had no idea of the going rate. The home I rent out is better in many respects than my own. Tenant law has got a lot stricter. I cannot pass the cost onto the tenant because the tenancy contract stipulates the windows must be professionally cleaned at start of tenancy. This is one to chalk down to experience, and I’ll make sure to communicate very clearly with any future trades re who to quote to (Me) and who is paying them for the job (Me).

£6 in Glasgow, 3 bed end of terrace house, front and back.

PosyRosie · 21/10/2020 23:22

£12 for a 6 bedroom house plus extension with floor to ceiling windows and 3 skylights. I used to think I might be getting ripped off but it seems quite good reading this thread! Oh and front door, side door and patio doors which are all fully glazed.

Solina · 21/10/2020 23:37

I must say I would be livid at them for going ahead doing the job without being given the permission to do so. That is not how it works!! Not sure what can be done about it though.

TheClitterati · 22/10/2020 00:29

I'm in Kent. 3 bed, 3 story. £20

Sitdowncupoftea · 22/10/2020 15:06

I think it depends where you live. I have 5 bed detached and pay £14

theyoungishman · 23/10/2020 05:45

Update- I got mine done yesterday was $250. the guy did all windows inside and out, plus tracks for sliding doors, plus fly screens. Oh my hand with a cloth/ squeegee. he was here for 4 hours and didn't finish the job he's coming back tomorrow to complete.
I thought $250 was quite a lot but given the amount of time and effort he's put in I think it's pretty reasonable

Aridane · 23/10/2020 05:52

I hate threads like this where everyone does the ‘ I paid £250 for a whole house being decorated’ or ‘I love in south west London and only pay £20 for cleaning of my 5 bedroomed mansion’

Ifailed · 23/10/2020 06:24

I've cleaned windows in the past, in Kent. Cleaning inside is a PITA, removing plants, ornaments etc. Making sure you leave no drips or spills on floors as you clean and move about the house all adds to extra time & quite a few men were very uncomfortable working in girls rooms, they felt it was 'wrong'. We'd typically charge twice the outside rate for insides.
The pole system uses deionised water, so when it dries it leaves no marks. It's quicker and a lot safer than using a ladder, pretty well all downs are done with a mop, blade and scrims. We'd wipe down any spills on the sill, but actually cleaning the whole frame was extra.
Isolated rural jobs were charged at a higher rate as you can easily spend more time travelling than cleaning.
Pet crap, thorny bushes and wasp nests were an occupational hazard. Leaded windows are another PITA to deal with, alongside rotten window frames, cracked glass and vicious dogs.

whataboutbob · 23/10/2020 10:14

@Aridane I totally agree. It’s the same when you ask how jobs should be priced up when you’re getting quotes- people pile in saying the quotes are too high and you should pay half that- but then you find absolutely no one will take the job on for the price some people on here say they paid.
@Ifailed thanks for your very useful post. Really good to get the view from the other side of the window pane! @theyoungishman you either have a huge house or that guy is slow! Let’s hope you’re not on a seagull flight path.
Haven’t heard anything from the company so I’m going to ring them and make an offer for £40.
