Carpet Fitter being PITA advise needed

I've got the carpet fitter here and he's moaning and complaining about everything and being a royal pain.

I offered to send him pictures or said he could see the property before he did the job but he said that was ok. I explained what the job was beforehand and said that there would be furniture in each room but I would empty it all and help with moving if necessary.

He has not stopped MOANING since he got here! He had another job to get to so keeps moaning that the stairs aren't straight (it's a Victorian property), that I got two different types of underlay 9mm for stairs and 11mm for bedroom and living room - he said this was strange. I told him that this was what I was advised to do.

He moaned about the carpet I've chosen saying he'd have to put in more gripper. He's moaned about having to do a join in the living room!

I'm going to lose it soon with him. Talk me down or help me understand what's going on.

I'm thinking that he's going to do a half arsed job or wants to charge more money.

He's in the palm of your hands now OP.
Make sure you wash'em when he goes!

@username501

I praised him and he giggled. He's certainly a live one.
It was worth reading this thread, just for that comment. I’m picturing a big fella giggling away like a child now. 😁

A brain tumour! Maybe this is part of their apprenticeship - they have a day course on complaints divided into modules.

He's not going anywhere near the palm of my hands - don't worry.

He's nearly finished. He's working on the bedroom now. I'm bracing myself for the argument about price - I know this has been building up to that.

He hasn't done a bad job. Stairs look very neat. Living room is fine as well. He's been here 8 hours so far!

Had the moaniest carpet fitter ever years ago, still did a good job. His mate even told him to lay off the whinging at one point

Definitely part of the apprenticeship

A friends partner did all my carpet fitting, £30 a room, he was so polite and tidy, an absolute dream!

Alexalee · 13/10/2020 18:23

What was the original price?
Has to be 150 if he's been there all day

username501 · 13/10/2020 18:28

£165 but I bought all grippers, door bars etc His was just labour. Plus £25 for his parking.

Ok he's gone. No argument about price but he charge £40 for parking! So I need to check that out - think he might have ripped me off there. Apart from that he's left all the left over carpet for me to dispose off and two doors to put on as he didn't have the tools to shave them. Giant pain in the rear. But the carpet is down and he's gone. Thank god for small mercies.

Well done for getting through that OP. But I wouldn't, personally, do anything about the parking - the difference is only £15 - I'd'a paid that to get rid of him. If you start picking at it you've only got to engage with him again.
Chalk it up to experience.

username501 · 13/10/2020 19:01

It's because I can get a resident's day pass which costs £11 so I said I'd pay for parking. However, he managed to spend £40 on some kind of app he has for parking. I asked him to send me the receipts and I'd get that refunded. He won't though - the tit.

Yes, thank god he's gone; he was a massive bellend but my very expensive carpet hasn't been butchered and it's done.

Perhaps that's all part of it - he spends all day being unbelievably annoying and winds you up soooooooooooo much that you are that relieved he's finally gone that you don't query the mess left behind, that the work isn't totally finished and the price went up.

username501 · 13/10/2020 19:30

It's definitely all part of it. I could tell that he was aiming for more cash as soon as he got here. I've already dumped all the stuff he left. One of the doors needed replacing anyway so there's only one to get shaved and fitted.
