Carpet Fitter being PITA advise needed

I've got the carpet fitter here and he's moaning and complaining about everything and being a royal pain.

I offered to send him pictures or said he could see the property before he did the job but he said that was ok. I explained what the job was beforehand and said that there would be furniture in each room but I would empty it all and help with moving if necessary.

He has not stopped MOANING since he got here! He had another job to get to so keeps moaning that the stairs aren't straight (it's a Victorian property), that I got two different types of underlay 9mm for stairs and 11mm for bedroom and living room - he said this was strange. I told him that this was what I was advised to do.

He moaned about the carpet I've chosen saying he'd have to put in more gripper. He's moaned about having to do a join in the living room!

I'm going to lose it soon with him. Talk me down or help me understand what's going on.

I'm thinking that he's going to do a half arsed job or wants to charge more money.

I've just spoken to him and said that if it's a pain he can leave after doing the underlay. But he doesn't seem keen on that idea. He moaned again about the furniture and I said well where do you want it to go? He had no answer for that either.

He hasn't touched the carpet yet.

I also said that I understand his frustration, but this was all discussed beforehand and he was aware of the situation before he took the job. He's being a bit better now.

Maybe he should get a different job. He clearly doesn't like fitting carpets!

movingonup20 · 13/10/2020 13:25

@friendlycat

Carpet only comes in certain sizes (unless a custom order) so joins are needed in larger spaces.

MJMG2015 · 13/10/2020 13:34

Carpet fitters are a breed apart. Moaning is a default setting. Mind you if I fucked my knees like that I'd moan too 🤣. I used to work with a bunch of them, it was not a cheery experience.

I hope he does a good job & doesn't ruin your carpet 🤞🏼

He's now moaning about the size of the carpet. Jesus, he could win awards.

The tiler that did our ground floor just was depressing.
He complained about every single thing, vaped constantly and told how his brother committed suicide and he went on a downer.
Luckily he worked with his son who laid the tiles while the Dad run his jaw.
Never again, four days of him and I was completely depressed too!

OnCandyStripeLegs · 13/10/2020 14:17

Can you get him off the subject of the carpet and into something less controversial like Brexit or Trump? I'm suspecting he has strong views about that as well.

username501 · 13/10/2020 14:20

Vaped constantly Grin

I'll be vaping soon. Hmm

Are you mad?? I'm not engaging with him. I'm back in my bedroom hiding.

I know this will not help with your present situation but in future ask friends/family/neighbours for their recommendations regarding tradespeople also look on Check a Trade.
Decent tradespeople don't need to advertise on Gumtree because they get so much work via word of mouth and their skills are highly sought after.

This is going to end badly. I sense it.
username501 · 13/10/2020 14:33

Well it's ok so far. He's done the living room carpet and it's fine. I was talking to him watching him work for a while and he's doing ok. If he wasn't I would have kicked him out.

He also complimented the carpet after moaning all morning about how crap it was from the sample. Seems very temperamental.

And these are 'professionals' that we give our hard earned money to.
I hate having work done in the house. New boiler going in next week - 3 day job. Costing me best part of 3 months wages!

username501 · 13/10/2020 14:47

I know. You'd think they'd be polite and professional, I've done everything I could to accommodate him. Have cleared out all wardrobes, book cases, drawers, cupboards, taken up the flooring and disposed of it, hoovered it all. Offered to help with moving the furniture, paid his sodding parking as he moaned about that. He's still moaning!

BertiesLanding · 13/10/2020 14:52

I've found that having a moan with the moaner about something unconnected to both of you helps oil the wheels of diplomacy.

username501 · 13/10/2020 14:55

Hmmm, well I've just let him get on with it. I did apologise for any inconvenience, offered to do what I can to accommodate him, made him tea and offered biscuits. (Also hinted that he can sod off back to moan town if he wasn't happy).

There's a long running thread on here about carpet fitters. Pops up every few years. I'm always happy to see it

giletrouge · 13/10/2020 15:08

If he's now doing a good job so far try heaping him with praise OP. Fucking male ego should respond to that and soften him up.
You can have your fingers crossed in your pocket.
'Oh Moany Fucker, that looks wonderful gosh I'll have to recommend you to all my friends, my carpet looks stunning!' Grin

username501 · 13/10/2020 15:14

He might get all Benny Hill if I start praising him. I'll offer him some more biscuits and see how he's doing.

OP posts:
username501 · 13/10/2020 15:19

I praised him and he giggled. He's certainly a live one.

Our kitchen fitter was like this. Worked hard and did a pretty good job but the constant moaning for 2 weeks drove us mad!!

username501 · 13/10/2020 15:26

I couldn't take two weeks of this. Gin I'd rather walk in floorboards.

OP posts:
Anordinarymum · 13/10/2020 15:35

I had a carpet fitter lay a stair and landing carpet and he moaned about everything but did a good job. He was supposed to come back and fit another carpet the next week but cancelled as he disovered he had a brain tumour.

He didn't. I saw him in the supermarket shopping with his wife. He had the grace to look embarassed but when I turned the corner of the aisle he has done a runner and left his wife to do the shopping alone.

I saw his van in the car park as I left. He was in the driver seat with a newspaper over his face the clown
