Refitting a kitchen - what colour?

I'm going to redo my kitchen towards the end of this year, early next year.

It's sizeable, but backs onto my north facing garden, so can be quite dark.

I can't quite decide what colour cupboards to go with. Sage green? White? A very, very light grey? Navy?

Worktops, flooring and tiles still all to be decided...

It's the first time I've got to decide this all on my own (first time properly living alone as an adult) and I'm a bit spoilt for choice!

I'm a bit worried about the current grey trend going out of fashion. And I have to renovate sympathetically to my victorian house... any ideas/inspiration?

I love my colours...... sage green.... the island green quite a bit darker. Looks lovely on both sunny and darker days..... and cosy at night with the lights on!

Is sage green a trend colour? Or is navy going to be the next grey?

Ideally I'd like to go with grey but kitchens are so expensive that I don't want to go with something that will be outdated in two years...

I'm planning mine and love navy with white tops

LivingoffCoffee · 05/10/2020 13:52

We just agreed plans for our new kitchen (aiming to get it done pre-Christmas! Eek!). This is basically what we're going for - really good pale grey overall and then navy blue island.

The goes with the colours of the rest of the house - lots of blues/greys/greens. And honestly has just always been what I pictured for my dream kitchen!

What colours is the rest of the house? What style do you have for furniture, etc?

IMHO navy will become closely associated with a couple of years either side of 2019 and thus will date quickly. I am having a renovation just now and have gone for a two tone kitchen as I think that style will have greater longevity.

pickingdaisies · 05/10/2020 13:54

Be careful using grey in a north facing kitchen, it could end up looking blue. We ended up using a greige colour, which looks grey once it's on the walls in the kitchen, but tbh now that grey is everywhere I'm getting sick of it, and it still looks cold. Brilliant white also looks distinctly blue.

LivingoffCoffee · 05/10/2020 13:54

If you like grey - go with it! If you're picking it because it's trendy, then don't.

But don't write off a colour because you're worried it will date. Everything dates eventually.

I’ve done a few kitchens and went with trendy ones but I always get bored of them too quickly.

The next one is going to be more classic so white or off-white. It can always be jazzed up with cheaper things that are easier to change in the future like pendant lights, splash back tiling or door knobs. If you’re going for a more traditional look, you can add open shelving with some cool stuff on display or a couple of pictures etc to stop the kitchen feeling plain.

This is beautiful, too!

The rest of the house is a mixture. The bits that have been done up are natural wood/whites and light grey walls (so can be painted over).

My favourite 'colour' has even grey since I was a child (and was frustrated every time someone told me that grey wasn't a colour Blush).

I've not been able to have grey rooms since I was a teenager as all my ex's hated grey, so I'm enjoying having it in my house, but I do worry about it being seen as a trend.

Re: how it will look in my kitchen, I've got a light grey in the dining room and it does look grey, rather than blue but I'll get some samples in and see how the tone changes throughout the day.

Thanks for all the advice so far! Smile

Beautiful kitchen, @GingerGill! Who did you get your units from?

GingerGill · 05/10/2020 18:15

Peden & Pringle - bespoke kitchen company based in Edinburgh but work all over the UK.

coldgraybrix · 05/10/2020 18:17

We've just had ours done - cream units, light wood coloured worktops, white rectangular tiles, flooring looks like terracotta tiles, but a bit paler than that, more mushroom really, and the walls are pale sage. All my kitchen jars, kettle, pot stands etc are either white, chrome, black, cork, olive wood, clear glass or cream, with a few odds and ends of blue and white china.

I absolutely love it.

LeoTimmyandVi · 05/10/2020 18:19

@coldgraybrix - I want to paint my nee kitchen walls pale sage green - which one did you use please?

BlackberrySky · 05/10/2020 18:23

Mine is pink and white but I appreciate that's not everyone's cup of tea!

EmpressoftheMundane · 05/10/2020 18:29

Don’t do grey. It’s already over. And, I think in a few years you would regret it.

White/off-white is the most classic choice.

Cismyfatarsey · 05/10/2020 18:29

We are putting in a navy kitchen with oak worktops and slate grey flooring.

I cannot wait!!

Not if it's been OP's favourite colour since she was a child. Some people just like a certain colour - not because it's a current trend!
mountains76 · 05/10/2020 19:07

I really like off white, very light gray or even matt white. To be honest i've come to the conclusion that painted walls/kitchens will always at when colour trends come and go, apart from white, which seems to be a constant. At least in art galleries and architects houses.

bouncydog · 05/10/2020 19:12

We’ve done ours in maple with timeless walls and glass splash backs, with black granite tops. Shaker but bar handles in the hopes it won’t date!

We've just fitted a new kitchen in our NNW facing kitchen which looks lovely. Cabinets are a lovely warm grey (DIY kitchens cashmere), with white walls (F&B Pointing). Warm undercabinet lighting and fairy lights makes everything look soft and cosy, plus one wall has white shelving instead of wall cabinets. Couple of wooden items (a large wall mounted plate rack, spice rack, chair), and some pretty stuff on the shelves. Looks just gorgeous.

Go with what you love.

notacatperson1 · 05/10/2020 19:24

I had our kitchen renovated three years ago. We went for a very light sage, probably more of a turquoise for the bottom cupboards and a beige for the top. Three years later we are still delighted with it and it looks like new x

Crazzzycat · 05/10/2020 19:54

If grey has always been your favourite colour, than obviously that’s what you should go for.

Much better to be looking at an untrendy colour you love, than a trendy colour you don’t like as much 😁

Ylvamoon · 05/10/2020 19:59

My new kitchen will be cashmere ... I think grey can be a bit cold especially in a north facing room.

I tend to stick to classic for expensive things like kitchens.

My units are DiY kitchens Mussel (so a neutral greige) with oak tops and white tiling.

I did have sage walls, now i have navy. Both look great with the neutral kitchen and wall colour is easy to change to keep up with trends
