Have you used? Do they work?

OP posts:

Yes
Yes

paintmywholehousepink · 03/10/2020 15:23

Which paint did you use? @7to25 and which colours were you copying?

OP posts:
7to25 · 03/10/2020 15:33

All Johnson paints mixed to copy Farrow and Ball.
Cromarty
Purbeck Stone
Charleston Grey
All for woodwork. I use Fand B for ceilings where nobody touches them

dontcallmelen · 03/10/2020 15:35

Recently had Little Greene coloured matched with Valspar was very impressed, was the China blue one.

7to25 · 03/10/2020 15:36

Daughter gas had Hague blue and studio green mixed

Flygirl94 · 03/10/2020 15:47

@7to25 I’m looking at Johnsons for farrow and ball colours. Did you just go and ask for them or did you take a sample pot/piece of paper painted?

CottonSock · 03/10/2020 15:48

I just gave them the farrow and ball colour number. Perfect match

MoseSchrute · 03/10/2020 16:00

Our decorator a few years ago matched a farrow and ball paint in dulux easy care which I’m very pleased with.

paintmywholehousepink · 03/10/2020 16:04

Do the matches look shiny compared to F&B?

OP posts:
paintmywholehousepink · 03/10/2020 16:04

Never heard of Johnsons... is it better than dulux?

OP posts:
7to25 · 03/10/2020 16:05

No not shiny

HappyPotato · 03/10/2020 16:05

I've had Farrow and Ball paint chips colour matched in Valspar and they've been really good. Not shiny at all, don't quite have the depth of F&B but definitely fine for us

QualityFeet · 03/10/2020 16:09

I don’t rate Valspar
Gave it up and returned to F and B proper and no regrets as they look better and wear better

7to25 · 03/10/2020 16:10

I was a bit worried about the Cromarty but am very pleased. It is a very subtle grey green that can look blue in fading light. Spot on.

NotMeNoNo · 03/10/2020 19:43

It's Johnstones paint, it is a trade brand you can get at decorators merchants.

paintmywholehousepink · 03/10/2020 20:28

had valspar eggshell matched to drawing room blue - v.g
johnstone to cooking apple- ok but too pale really no depth
Valspar emulsion - matched to french grey - rubbish

also tried valspar emulsion for something else and thought it was poor quality so think it maybe that the paint is rubbish - although the eggshell is better than dulux! (not as good as FB but a 1/3rd price)
I would never use Valspar emulsion again..

My neighbour gets hers mixed at Leyland (also trade supplier) and has had great results - yes they arent quite as good as F&B but half the price I'm going there for my next

lojoko · 04/10/2020 15:48

Yes in most cases. I use Leyland trade and it's great.

There are some cases where I would use the posh paints, chiefly intense pigment ultra matte, or very light whites and pinks in satin, because the light quality matters so much in those cases. Oh and also sometimes on a north wall.

Happydaysforever123 · 04/10/2020 18:13

Johnston's match to farrow and Ball, colour not quite the same, finish OK. I would pay the price of farrow and all next time.

CarrieMoonbeams · 04/10/2020 18:17

Another vote here for Johnson's paint for Farrow and Ball colours. The durable finish is perfect for the walls in my house, and I've used the satin finish (oil based) to paint some furniture, which is terrific.

ParisianLady · 04/10/2020 18:26

I've yet to see a colour match which was exactly right, there is always a subtle something in the pigments and depth of colour that doesn't seem quite the same.

Our decorator tried to pass off a F&B colour match and I just knew it wasn't right.

That said, it would seem most other people on the thread disagree with me Grin

user1488363130 · 04/10/2020 18:34

Yep, Johnstone’s trade in F&B colours. Ordered from www.thepaintshed.com/

Acornacorn · 04/10/2020 18:39

We tried Johnstone’s colour matched and whilst the colour was okay, we didn’t like the finish so we just buy the proper stuff mainly now for the depth of colour. Benjamin Moore paint colour matched to Little Greene is good for woodwork, in our experience.

NotMeNoNo · 04/10/2020 18:47

I agree don't bother with the Valspar emulsion. My son wanted his bedroom dark blue. After 4 streaky coats I was practically sobbing.
Having said that I'm over my posh paint stage now and happy with Dulux.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 04/10/2020 20:41

Quite surprised some people have had no joy with Valspar- I’ve just done 3 bedrooms using their stuff and it’s given great coverage. The blue we used for dd’s room is practically luminous, it’s so crisp!

It depends on your eye for detail OP. If you’re like me and it’s close enough and you like the colour and the savings are important, that’s fine. But other people who are maybe more particular would notice it’s not quite right and it would piss them off until they changed it!
