Boilers! ? Which one please

chuffedasbuttons · 30/09/2020 21:50

Two lovely plumbers. Two quotes. Money is near enough same.

One swears Worcester Bosch
The other Ideal.

So whilst I don't have actual oomph and whoosh stuff numbers for each boiler, I felt assured both believe their boiler to be exactly what the house needs. (It's going in the loft).

Do Mumsnetters have a preferred boiler? And please oh wise one, what does @pigletjohn think?

(Been slightly in luff with PJ since at least 2012) so even if this thread is quiet, do at least pop along to remind him how fab he is.

We've just had a Vaillant fitted.

I would personally only go for a main brand like Worcester Bosch, Vaillant etc. Looking up Ideal, they aren't a new brand, but not one I'm familiar with.

Is there a difference in the warranty or anything? Any extras like thermostats?

ChickensMightFly · 30/09/2020 22:06

It's it for a mains gas fuel boiler?

Weesweetiewife · 30/09/2020 22:10

We had one fitted 2 weeks ago. We looked at which! Recommendation and went with the worcester

PigletJohn · 30/09/2020 22:45

Which usually like Vaillant, Worcester and Viessmann.

Gasmen can never agree. Put ten of them in a room and you will get 15 opinions. Some of them grumble that Worcester have too many plastic parts in them now. I have a Viessmann and it got marked down this year because parts are not widely stocked. Since mine is 15 years old and has never needed any, this doesn't trouble me.

I would be more concerned about a brand that broke down so often that you could buy spare parts on every street corner.

chuffedasbuttons · 30/09/2020 22:46

It's a combi. Gas.

Ideal vogue Max v WB Greenstar 8000

( I dug out the quotes)

PigletJohn · 30/09/2020 22:47

p.s.

go on the makers website, see how long the warranty is, and if you get extra years extended warranty when it is fitted by one of their Approved Installers. This was of interest to me.

chuffedasbuttons · 30/09/2020 22:50

I'm a bit cynical with Which.

They promote their advertisers. It's the basic facts of their business model - although somewhat useful, I don't particularly abide their reviews.

I've had a Viessman and a glow worm. The glow worm was brill until they did some sort of part recall and sent their own engineer - it never worked the same after.

Bought house 2 years ago. Survey flagged boiler replacement. It's an ideal and admittedly it's probably ten years old but it's been broken a long time according to service engineer, it's rusty and it's bloody noisy.

And WAVES at PJ with delight so thank you thank you!

I have had an ideal for 10 years but I'm shortly having it replaced with a viesmann. I'd go German every time given the choice

Flamingolingo · 30/09/2020 22:55

We had a Worcester greenstar combi fitted in our old house and I loved it. We had it with a Worcester wave (kind of like a nest) and it worked really well for us.

chuffedasbuttons · 30/09/2020 22:55

I suppose I should add Ideal old boiler - whilst it's clonky and rusty and parts are broken, it still works pretty damn consistently!

I'm trying to circumnavigate its demise Grin

OP posts:
R1R2 · 30/09/2020 22:57

Vaillant or Ideal. Viessmann are a bunch of evasive twats.

chuffedasbuttons · 30/09/2020 22:58

I fitted a Viessman in my old house with a Honeywell thermostat - about 7 years ago and it was guaranteed for 5 years but only if serviced every year by a particular engineer ..... and they were double the price of other engineers

So whilst I do love the brand and the ethos, it doesn't fit my budget requirements at the moment (plus I always thought 5 years was shit! My washing machine has longer

We've just had a new Worcester Bosch combi boiler installed a fortnight ago. Really pleased with it, and it is so much better than the one we had before. Quiet, efficient and heats the water a lot faster too.

PigletJohn · 01/10/2020 01:22

@chuffedasbuttons

Can you show me an example of an advertisement in "Which?" please?

mumsy27 · 01/10/2020 01:33

previous property had glow worm for 18 years and still running now, no headache, never serviced.

AlwaysLatte · 01/10/2020 01:39

We just fitted an external Grant boiler. It's very efficient and it's so much better now the noise is outside.

tanstaafl · 01/10/2020 11:37

We had ideal Vogue max 32 combi fitted in March.
Came with a magnetic filter which extents the general 10 year warranty to 12 years for a couple of key components.

We had a 30 year old Ideal boiler before that which we replaced only because the parts were getting thin on the ground.

There are stories good and bad for each brand.
Last year I was reading Ideal were a poor choice, reliability issues and so on, but by the time February came around, Ideal were back, great warranty, good components, had listened to complaints and were as a good a choice as any.

If I was doing it again tomorrow, I’d be tempted to go for the max 40 just for the better hot water flow rate as we’re going to be running a shower off the combi ( previously only had electric shower ) but I’m sure the gas bills would be higher just for CH with that bigger burner in the ‘40.

Finally, Ideal boilers work with a variety of controllers as they’re signed up to some industry standard , the name of which escapes me at the moment!

Have a look at the Green scheme launched this month. Provided you have something else done eg loft/wall insulation you can possibly
get a discount on a new boiler as well!
I think you need to use a Trusted Tradesman to get it.
As other have said, a good warranty is really worth having as well,
But to get this you normally have to have an annual service

HaggieMaggie · 01/10/2020 20:57

My plumber swears by Vailant which we had installed nine years ago by him. On,y service it every couple of years and never had a fault.

chuffedasbuttons · 01/10/2020 22:37

Thank you all so much

Seems both have 12 years warranty

Tough to decide.
It's going in the loft and WB are heavy on the aesthetics of theirs which is irrelevant.

@PigletJohn I know it's not obvious but Which do carry advertisers.
As do Mumsnet. I've worked in publishing industry - makes one very cynical. I'd much rather MN personal views and I entirely count YOUR personal view within that. So again - thank you

We got the glow worm it’s condenser boiler been running 11 rads for 12 years, it’s still going strong

pilates · 02/10/2020 17:38

The Green Scheme is of zero use to 90% of people.

Worcester Bosch. Ours is fab and heats a six bedroom house 😊
