3 bedrooms, only 1 bathroom. Would this put you off?

Sorry if this has been done before, but I'd really welcome thoughts on this. We viewed a house today which I really liked but it only has one bathroom (not even a separate downstairs toilet). It's not particularly a problem for me but I'm worried about selling on.

Would you be put off buying a house with only one bathroom?

Yes. Unless there was room to put one in.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 20/09/2020 15:22

We lived in a 3-bed semi that only had one toilet and one bathroom (both upstairs, separate rooms next to each other) for 12 years. I think the fact the rooms were separate helped tbh.

AntiHop · 20/09/2020 15:24

It would put me off unless there was somewhere we could put one in, eg understairs.

BootyMcBootFace · 20/09/2020 15:29

Thanks for that variety of views!

There probably is scope to extend downstairs and put in a small bathroom eventually (would currently be very wary of starting building work with uncertainty re second lock down etc).

It's a biggish house with 3 proper bedrooms so my feeling is we'd probably sell to a family who'd want more bathrooms but DP doesn't think it's an issue.

Lots of food for thought there but I'm acutely aware we'll need to compromise on something (or wait for a lottery win!) so this might be what goes on my wishlist.

Yes, would be a deal breaker for me. Need at least 2 toilets

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 20/09/2020 15:37

Yes would put me off, I have 3 teenagers and it's hard enough with 2 loos

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 15:39

I think the op asking if one bathroom would put people off has thrown the answers, because one bathroom is the norm in a house this size. Having a seperate downstairs loo, is clearly not a second bathroom.

Op are you really asking if a three bed house should have two full blown bathrooms, as you’ve written. Or are you asking if not having a second loo would put folks off.

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 15:41

There probably is scope to extend downstairs and put in a small bathroom eventually (would currently be very wary of starting building work with uncertainty re second lock down etc).

Op do you know what a bathroom is? It’s a room containing a bath or shower. Do you mean a lavatory? Which is a room containing a loo and sink?

It is normal in the area I am selling in and I haven't had any negative feedback about it even though its tiny. If we were staying I had planned to have a downstairs shower room. Now we are looking and I want at least one family bathroom and an ensuite

Marmunia1975 · 20/09/2020 15:51

Definite no-no. DH and I have separate bathrooms.

Varnas · 20/09/2020 15:51

Not necessarily bathroom but at least second toilet is on the top of my list.
We all know these moments when you are enjoying a long bath or shower and your OH or child is desperately knocking on the bathroom door with urgent need 😁

perfumeistooexpensive · 20/09/2020 15:53

A second toilet is the minimum. Preferably a second bathroom. I know that only one toilet in a house loses a lot of potential buyers.

LouisBalfour · 20/09/2020 16:04

Unless I could easily fit one in, I wouldn’t but a house without a downstairs cloakroom.

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 16:05

Yes, one loo often puts people off, one bathroom does not. Which is why I’m wondering if the op is confused about what a bathroom is, or if she is actually asking of folks want two bathrooms and is going to put a second bathroom in downstairs with a shower or a bath.

BootyMcBootFace · 20/09/2020 16:37

Sorry not to have been clearer in my original post, the house only has one toilet in a family bathroom. No second toilet or separate bathroom.

OP posts:
Varnas · 20/09/2020 16:43

Is there any option to install second toilet? Under the stairs or something?
Depends on the area really - if it's a southafter and not many houses for sale, then most people would probably compromise. But generally not having the option of a second loo is a very negative point.
I don't think many people would care about second bathroom though.

RedRumTheHorse · 20/09/2020 16:46

If I could put in a second toilet/shower room - no.

If there wasn't space to put one in - yes.

LolaSmiles · 20/09/2020 16:47

One bathroom wouldn't put me off, but the lack of downstairs toilet would.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/09/2020 16:50

Total deal breaker for me.

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 16:51

I think if there is not room for a second loo without extending it would put me off.

randomsabreuse · 20/09/2020 16:54

Second toilet definitely essential for me. DC have a tedious habit of only deciding they need the toilet when their need is urgent, we get enough panicking when DC eventually accepts that she needs to go, 10 minutes after first being spotted doing "the dance" and has to go upstairs as someone else has given up and gone into the downstairs toilet...

DH also takes bloody ages, especially when his new car magazine has arrived so there would be puddles if we didn't have 2.

Also any upset stomachs, definitely preferable if more than 1 bottom can be accommodated at once...

CarHire101 · 20/09/2020 16:59

Doesn’t it depend on circumstances of who is living in the property and who is buying it/intended market (young couple vs young family), the house itself (large 3 bed detached or standard Victorian terrace)....

I guess as long as I there is potential to put one in and my circumstances mean I actually needed additional toilet and the finances stack up then I would still buy.

CraftyGin · 20/09/2020 17:01

Lots of preciousness here.

LolaSmiles · 20/09/2020 17:06

Lots of preciousness here.
Aka people have been asked their opinions and preferences regarding property and they've given their views.

I don't understand the claims on here that people are being precious or snobby etc when someone asks for opinions on property and people give their opinions. If all properties were equally desirable to everyone then there'd not be a massive range of properties out there to suit the fact that different people seek different things, and different people will be willing to make different compromises.

RomanyBlood · 20/09/2020 17:08

It’s pretty normal.

Everyone in our type of house in our road has one bathroom /WC in a 3 bed until they have their loft done or kitchen extension.

MN is far more spoilt and princessy than the population at large, I often find.
