This house has just been listed nearby. Both, the exterior and interior, look original but completely different styles. A bit odd but kind of interesting. What would you do with the house?
(I’m not looking but I found the house highly unusual so I thought I’d post).

I think the recently fitted kitchen/breakfast room, bathrooms and radiators are dreadful and would rip them out along with the cheap carpets. I would hope the original flooring would still be underneath.
What a horrible upgrade of a lovely Arts and Crafts house.

And the current owner is planning on installing plantation shutters to all the rooms......

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 01/09/2020 14:01

Paint the wooden panels white ASAP.

gnomeisland · 01/09/2020 14:03

Arts and Crafts style. But that's wrong too. It's a 1930s pastiche hence the mixed up architectural styles.

But the recent work is still dreadful

JamesZebra · 01/09/2020 14:08

I agree that the kitchen and bathrooms looks quite cheap in comparison to the grandeur of the overall house. I also think I would be looking at opening up the kitchen to the dining room to create a bigger family space.
The carpets are wrong for the style of the house and I would expect a hard/tile floor in the hallway.
I think I would need to paint the panelling too as its a bit dark for me but equally lots of people would be appalled by that idea as they are part of the character of the home.

Mamagotskills · 01/09/2020 14:14

Looks like a cheap and nasty renovation job to me, shame as it could be quite lovely

JoJoSM2 · 01/09/2020 14:16

I think it’s probably a probate where they put a tidy cheap kitchen so that potential buyers feel they can do it room-by-room rather than have a massive project on their hands. Yes, definitely a fixer upper.

I wondered whether I’d re-do either the outside or the inside so it’s all Art Deco or Arts and Crafts rather than a mixture.

North-facing garden, which is a shame, unless it's long and open enough for that not to matter too much.

Does look like a 'builder's finish' (magnolia and cheap carpet) tidy-up to sell. I suppose that means it might be liveable while you decided what to do. I agree re: parquet flooring and knocking the kitchen and dining through. I quite like the picture windows in the 'family room' extension, although I imagine it gets very cold in there.

I don't love the wrought iron bits and the fake shutters on the frontage - I can't imagine they're original to either period.

I think I'd have to find out a bit more about its history and proceed accordingly!

Murmurur · 01/09/2020 15:41

The carpets are just all sorts of wrong! Gorgeous garden, I don't know the area but it seems a lot for the money, for London commuter belt.

The carpets would have to go. I think I'd stick with the brown panelling and add some darker colours back in. Could do with combining loo and bathroom upstairs together.

I don't think I could knock through to the dining room. It's too symmetrical!

picklemewalnuts · 01/09/2020 16:02

I don't like the panelled room with medieval ish fireplace. I'd probably paint it cream, and put in a fireplace more like the other one. But I'd investigate it first and make sure I wasn't wrecking something original.

positivelynegative · 01/09/2020 16:02

Oooh I love it. It would take a lot of money, but I think it's got good bones. Love the big hallway and landing. Agree that someone's tarted it up for sale.

positivelynegative · 01/09/2020 16:04

I'd be looking under the carpets for the original floors. We have oak floors in our 30's house.

MothAndRabbit · 01/09/2020 16:25

The first thing I would do is hunt down the philistines who chose that kitchen and those carpets. There is probably some beautiful parquet under that revolting cheap acrylic.

It has potential to be absolutely stunning even though it's a bit of a mish-mash. I love the windows, the panelling and the fireplaces. And it has loads of light, which is one thing our otherwise-beautiful 1930s house lacks.

JoJoSM2 · 01/09/2020 16:28

@picklemewalnuts it’s defo a 30’s original but just the inside and outside don’t match lol

@Murmurur
It’ll be interesting to see how much it goes for. It’s a very leafy and affluent patch of outer London but the house in question is on a rat run and far from amenities.
For comparables, this one is a similar size and also 1/3 acre plot but well placed for amenities:

I would want to paint the panelling but once done, it can't really be undone. The house has basically been magnoliaed to death and needs some stronger, colour - as dramatic as possible - and sympathetic flooring. The kitchen looks merely functional but is right next to the dining room so ripe for a bit of a sledgehammer project.

fallfallfall · 01/09/2020 16:42

actually i don't find it that much of a mish mash, i think it would be easy enough to do the whole art deco theme while maintaining the outside as is. there are a few windows (the non back trim ones) that i would source and upgrade. change the stained glass pieces to be in keeping with the 30's then work from there.
the garage....that needs a new front.

baldrickslittlesister · 01/09/2020 16:43

Get rid of the wood panels, replace the fire place in picture 6/7, change the surround in picture 10 for a more modern one and update the windows. It's too old fashioned.

MothAndRabbit · 01/09/2020 16:43

I'm horrified at all those posters who would paint the panelling! Grin

I suppose you'd have to see it 'for real' but the house looks light enough to cope with a bit of panelling. Remove the carpets, add some colour, lovely. Our breakfast room is entirely panelled like that and it is dark but that's because someone forgot to put any windows in when they extended out from it...

MothAndRabbit · 01/09/2020 16:46

I hope you don't have £1.1m to spare Grin
baldrickslittlesister · 01/09/2020 17:02

Hang on, I'll dig around down the back of the sofa...must be there somewhere Grin

JoJoSM2 · 01/09/2020 17:14

I really like that fireplace in 6/7 but Art Deco panelling was more like the attached picture. Not sure I’d want to live with it either, though.

What would you do with this house?

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 01/09/2020 17:27

@PickAChew
You carefully put clingfilm over all the panelling before you paint it, and if you don't like it you can just peel it off again. Grin

picklemewalnuts · 01/09/2020 17:29

The panelling and fireplace in p9,10 doesn't look right, to me.
P6 looks good, and the Hall panelling.
If there wasn't good wood under the carpet, or I needed carpet for some reason, then I'd go for sisal. Some National Trust properties have sisal and it looks great.

SBTLove · 01/09/2020 17:34

I adore Arts & Craft houses, quite a few around Glasgow but expensive.
The original features should be enhanced (not painting the panels!!) traditional kitchen and bathroom in keeping with house and some colour would be great.

SBTLove · 01/09/2020 17:35

@baldrickslittlesister
You heathen!!!!! these houses need to be preserved and kept in their style not ripped out.

Palavah · 01/09/2020 17:37

OMG please don't ruin the period features!

The bathroom needs to be redone and the kitchen flopwr at least, but you could probably do more with the whole space.

New carpets/check what's under them in case there is parquet.
