This house has just been listed nearby. Both, the exterior and interior, look original but completely different styles. A bit odd but kind of interesting. What would you do with the house?
(I’m not looking but I found the house highly unusual so I thought I’d post).

I wouldn't do anything, I just wouldn't buy it

tillytoodles1 · 01/09/2020 17:42

It looks creepy.

JoJoSM2 · 01/09/2020 17:45

OMG please don't ruin the period features!

It’s unusually well preserved for a 30’s house so hopefully whoever buys it will be keen the features.

@tillytoodles1 Do you live in a Victorian area? I remember that when I did, I also found 30’s houses quite creepy. Now got used to those and find Victorian properties really narrow and pokey.

We have that wood panelling in a 30's house. It is original (and dark in a normal sized hall).

I love the Deco bits but am wary of that era because of the iron structures that need specialist repair when they go wrong.

You carefully put clingfilm over all the panelling before you paint it, and if you don't like it you can just peel it off again. Grin
Haha, yes, I'd sooner find a way of living with it! It looks like it might have many layers of varnish built up on it, which is why it's less than photogenic.

We live in a far more modest 1930s house that still has the original stair rails, much to the surveyor's horror, as you could fit a whole child through some of the gaps in the angular design. In its lifetime, it's been dark varnish, then painted white, then covered with that bloody awful wood effect paint from the 80s. DH has stripped off as much as possible, as it was all chipping off. We're having to paint the bulk of it as it's such a mess but dh has managed to get the hand rails down to bare wood so we can at least wax them, as the natural grain is lovely.

CarolVordermansArse · 01/09/2020 17:50

@baldrickslittlesister

Get rid of the wood panels, replace the fire place in picture 6/7, change the surround in picture 10 for a more modern one and update the windows. It's too old fashioned.
Rip out all the features and paint it all grey too?

Please don't buy that house. I would love it as it is, and restore it to how it should be. Poirot would like it too.

Mintjulia · 01/09/2020 17:56

Get rid of that awful carpet. It's making me cringe.Shock

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/09/2020 18:00

What a lovely house.

I'd change very little. I'd source period bathroom fittings, replace the very dull kitchen and replace the grey carpet.

I'm not sure why you think the inside doesn't match the outside, that just applies to the kitchen and bathrooms.

Bluntness100 · 01/09/2020 18:02

Gosh I’d love to see where some posters on here live the way they are ripping this house to shreds. 😱

Misstic · 01/09/2020 18:06

It’s needs work but looks decent enough. It’s not grab inside but it would be okay for a short while.

DuesToTheDirt · 01/09/2020 18:10

No way would I paint the panelling. I grew up in a house of similar style, though not as grand, and the neighbours said the paneling was gorgeous before it was painted.

My parents went on to "modernise" the rest of the house by removing the original picture rails etc. Such a shame.

gnomeisland · 01/09/2020 18:11

I would love to see what it looked like before they put the awful kitchen and bathroom in and carpeted.
It says the same family have had it since 1972.

I suspect the refurb has devalued it.

The replacement windows and doors for the original crittall ones seem fairly well done. Probably installed before the recent refurb.

You heathen!!!!! these houses need to be preserved and kept in their style not ripped out.
I totally agree, I just couldn't resist seeing what people would say Grin

I wouldn't change anything to the structure.

JoJoSM2 · 01/09/2020 18:39

It says the same family have had it since 1972. I suspect the refurb has devalued it.

I don’t think it’s considered ‘refurbed’ and I think the price reflects the fact that the buyer will want to sort it out. I think that whoever inherited it, wanted to tidy it up a bit for the sale.

The windows on the front elevation are original (I’m local and sometimes drive past the house).

@JoJoSM2 It does seem a lot of house and garden for the money, especially compared to the narrow terraces you'd get round here for that (if you were lucky). I don't know Sutton at all, but I'm guessing you do! Is it in one of the desirable bits?

HoneysuckIejasmine · 01/09/2020 18:44

The kitchen is too small for that house, I'd be extending that with a sledgehammer. I love the panelling but not with that carpet. There's nothing wrong with carpet imo, just not right for that location.

I'm surprised the price is so "low"

MadamFlutterby · 01/09/2020 18:45

Love the house. Would redo the kitchen. Not so keen on Sutton though. Shame.

JoJoSM2 · 01/09/2020 18:51

@Thecazelets Yes, it’s very desirable. That’s a relatively small house and garden for the area. Otherwise, it’s massive houses on even bigger plots (some with pools and tennis courts) and that side of Sutton backs onto Banstead Commons (accessible coutryside). So popular with people who kind of want to move out of London but kind of don’t. Most sales are probates, though, as people tend to stay put for decades.

How close is it to the site of the new hospital that they're going to build at Belmont?

picklemewalnuts · 01/09/2020 19:24

One way of tackling the panelling would be to put squares of wallpaper/fabric in. It's not permanent, but works if you are not too hard on the house.

JoJoSM2 · 01/09/2020 20:37

@Svalberg

Are you a local too? I’m not up to speed on plans but there is a site which still does blood tests so maybe there? The Royal Marsden and the Institute of Cancer Research are by Belmont Village.

OP posts:
Svalberg · 01/09/2020 20:53

It's supposed to be alongside the Royal Marsden & the Institute of Cancer Research. DP used to live nearish to St George's & it was so noisy with all the ambulances, I couldn't live there so we looked elsewhere when we moved.

Svalberg · 01/09/2020 20:54

It's supposed to be pretty big, with all the A&E from St Helier & Epsom hospitals

TiddleTaddleTat · 01/09/2020 20:56

Beautiful house with lovely features. Carpet is the wrong colour with the wood panelling and banister in the hall, kitchen and bathroom look far too cheap and modern for the era of the house. Radiators are awful. Lots of potential to improve more sympathetically.

JoJoSM2 · 01/09/2020 20:56

Svalberg, I think there’s currently absolutely zero noise and you wouldn’t know Royal Marsden is there as it’s literally hidden. I can imagine it being different if a hospital with A&E is built.
