We are about to buy a house and have a baby on the way, now the seller is saying they want an extra £6000 or they'll pull out, what should we do? I feel like walking away but we are getting the house for a good deal

8 months pregnant? How far would an extra £6000 go when you’re on maternity leave?
That would pay for baby supplies and quite an easy maternity leave. Even a huge chunk towards daycare.

Work out how many hours it would take you to earn £6000, that’s what you’re giving away, your time earning the money.

OP we are in a similar situation with a baby at home and a seller who has changed the terms of the agreement. However- the big warning sign is the money being requested prior to exchange. If the sale fell through you would not get that back. It is also against the solicitors’ ethical code of conduct for payment before exchange so no solicitor would get involved with that request or help you with it.

I'm sorry you're in this situation too! Thanks for that, I'll say that to the seller too about it being against the ethical code of conduct

@7yo7yo

I’m sure this is pigletjohns field of expertise. They are an expert in matters such as this and you would do well to listen to them. For what it’s worth I wouldn’t pay them a penny and would pull out.
I think pigletjohn is a plumber!

Do you do extras?
I'm think of 'bleeding the rads' and a maybe a bit of 'rodding the soil pipe'?
Confused

I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned but this is very dodgy for you!
It would be seen as a way of avoiding the payment of stamp duty (the title registry would show you have paid £6k less for the property than you actually did this avoiding that proportion of stamp duty) Dont enter into this arrangement, it is completely illegal and you could get into serious trouble. It’s not worth it!

Isn't stamp duty frozen still?
Crazycatlady83 · 23/08/2020 21:23

Only up to a certain amount (I think £500k) and the OP doesn’t mention how much they are buying for. Also, you still have to declare how much you are buying for (to ensure you are eligible)
