Seller now wants an extra £6000

We are about to buy a house and have a baby on the way, now the seller is saying they want an extra £6000 or they'll pull out, what should we do? I feel like walking away but we are getting the house for a good deal

Sounds like they are up to their arses in it.

If you really want the house then agree to pay it between exchange and completion but that it must be taken off the sale price and be included in the sale documents.

Personally I wouldn't pay it, no way - just say you don't have it. I doubt they'll follow through and pull out either. It's not as if the next person who comes along and makes an offer will agree to put up the money for them to rent somewhere. They're only trying this on with you because you know them I imagine.

Who the hell needs £6k to rent? Even in high rent areas, deposit and first months rent isnt that much.

Calling BS on this one, they are playing you like a fiddle.

Is the current plan to exchange and complete same day?

If it is and they just need access to £6k in advance then if solicitor can move exchange forward say a week (or how ever much you both agree to) you normally pay 10% at exchange which would give them the £6k early but still be in original purchase price. Definitely mention to solicitor, you need to make sure you are protected.

You agreed a price. The question is is the house worth the extra £6k? And would you have the money to hand or have to increase your mortgage which may not be possible if the value of the house isn’t. £6k more

In addition why offer after exchange? At that point they will have access to monies from your deposit and from what you say they are not buying again if they need the money up front

It’s as dodgy as anything, just don’t do it and if the house falls through it wasn’t meant to be and you look for something else

Them looking for somewhere else to live is not your responsibility. They should have thought of that beforehand.

Also £6000 is a lot of money.

Just had a look at rightmove. You can get a terrace house for approx £1000 per month where I live, so that’s six month rent!

Also, who’s to say that they take the money then pull out if the sale, leaving you £6 grand short with nothing to show.

Don’t do it.

What a bloody cheek! Don't do it, they agreed to a price. I know you've spent on solicitors and survey but it's less than 6k. The risk they take your money and then pull out is too high but I wouldn't even offer to add it on to the house. You'll find something better, I understand you're pregnant but we moved house a couple of months after our second baby, don't let that be the reason to get a bad deal.

No no no!!! This is dodgy as fuck, don’t do it. Not even after exchange. The only way to accrpt it is to add to the value of house, but they you might need a new mortgage offer as the LTV will change. Nightmare. Walk away

This all sounds very dodgy OP. I would be inclined to pay them the money via the solicitor after exchange with the money to be deducted from the sale price. Whatever to decide to do, do it via a solicitor.

No do not pay! There's nothing stopping them from pulling out until it's all completed. My dh used to run a removals company and he's said a few times that he's had the truck loaded and ready to go and the sale has fallen through with an hour to go. It's not unusual for this to happen
