Lakeland paints - anyone got thoughts?

So our contractor has highly recommended these guys for paint:
www.lakelandpaints.co.uk/

Very eco and all that. They also looked from their colour chart to have a couple of very nice options - but then we ordered the samples and painted them up and there's no comparison - In real life the colours look really washed out. I'm gutted and wonder if we just got a bad batch or what?

We've had colour charts through from Little Greene and F&B and for the specific colour I'm after - a rich emerald green!! haha - they've not got that many good choices.

Anyone used Lakeland and have feedback? Anyone got any other alternatives I should be trying?

Thanks as always

I initially spent more than £400 on their matt white wall paint. It was horrible to work with since it did not stick on plaster walls. The walls were prepped for painting (sanded, dust and oil-free). In some places, it took around five coats to get decent coverage. Never the less, sometime after painting our walls, I was foolish enough to order wood paint from them. I was intending to use it for skirting boards and inside doors. I chose the FengShui white paint as their representative told me that the colour would be matching my wall paint. Unfortunately, it was not. It was a lot more yellow and looked entirely out of place. I decided to return one of the 1L cans I ordered but was slapped with a 25% return fee (or a handling fee, as they call it) and a delivery cost that made it unreasonable to return. I was disappointed because the can I wanted to return was only a couple of days old, never opened and still wrapped in the original film. I ended up selling it on eBay (luckily) and told their salesperson that I would rather donate the paint than send it back to them. Ultimately, they don’t have to charge a 25% fee for returns. It’s their choice to push their customers in a corner where it’s not viable to return anything. It just shows their level of greed.

Fast forward a few months, and we’re almost done with our renovation; however, we’ve damaged a few corners and decided to repaint them. This comes as no surprise since the paint it so weak that a light hit with anything will make it peal off. Of course, the leftover paint we had all started to smell rotten and grew mould a few weeks after we finished our renovation, so that had to be thrown out. Seriously, some food will last longer than this paint.

As a result, I checked Lakeland’s website only to find that they had removed the smaller paint can size from their website. This wasn’t a surprise to me since I already experienced how greedy they are. I reached out to them via email and was told by Adrian that “they can make the matt paint in 1L size as well; however, it is more than half the price of the 5L. Price-wise - including VAT the 1L is £43.73, and the 5L is £74.10”. Why? Are unit economics not supposed to come in play here? Again, they’re using this dodgy technique to make you buy more of their product. I ended up calling them, and Adrian took my order. I was not really willing to pay so much money for 1L of paint, but I thought to myself that I would just pay extra and draw the line here. A short while later I got another email from Adrian saying that “they just tried to process my order, but unfortunately the system is showing that my account or postcode is blocked. Unfortunately, there's nothing they can do about this. No payment will be taken, but they cannot process my order.” I then proceed to ask why they cannot process my order. They should be able to give me a simple answer; however, Ian West concluded that "he's sorry, but they can't process it".

How convenient? I must have hurt someone’s feelings when I last told them that I’d rather donate the paint than give them free money. They banned me for stating the obvious. It’s the first company I’ve ever come across that bans you for leaving a negative comment or stating the obvious. They never even apologised. It seems like this process is all too familiar to them.

The bottom line is this, my wife and I intended to be eco friendly and treat our health by painting our walls with a natural paint; however, we’ve wasted so much money, time and effort dealing with this horrible company and their paint that the entire intention seems meaningless. If anything, the stress has deteriorated out health. If you were thinking of buying Lakeland paints, I would urge you to reconsider and look elsewhere. It’s not worth it. Seriously.

P.S.Look at their Trustpilot reviews. 1 one-star review followed with a couple of five-star reviews. There is nothing in between. This pattern illustrates just how many companies deal with overwhelmingly negative reviews. They try to bury them in a sea of fake positive reviews. Don't be fooled.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 16/12/2020 17:21

Slightly irrelevant, but they are called Lakeland paints, and not actually based in Lakeland, but in Heysham , Lancs, which seems a bit...odd. Is it just me who thinks environmentally sound companies should be nice to deal with, and I am (unreasonably?) disappointed when they aren't?

Zoozoo101 · 17/12/2020 13:44

I really like Lakeland paint as it’s eco, can’t fault it and it’s very easy to work with. I’ve had no problems with them as a company or with their paint and would recommend. We’ve applied it to plaster walls and ceilings with no issues.

Crazzzycat · 17/12/2020 15:47

I’ve used Lakeland eggshell paint. Compared to “normal” paint, it’s really weird stuff and I’m not convinced that it is particularly strong. But as someone who has a severe allergy to normal gloss and eggshell paints, I can confirm that the formula Lakeland uses has to be different, because it doesn’t set off my allergies at all

If you are looking for an emerald green, have you looked at Graham & Brown? They do some lovely dark greens, like Eva, Adeline, or Glasshouse

You. are talking Lakeland and not Leyland right?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 18/12/2020 16:54

Yes, Lakeland. Only me wondering if Zoo is heavily invested in this?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 18/12/2020 16:56

Apologies Zoo. I can see you are a regular poster.

TheLadyGrayson · 18/12/2020 16:59

Have you seen photos of F&B Studio Green OP? It looks quite different in real life to the picture on their sample card I think.

Hi - Ian at Lakeland Paints - you dont need to believe us - just check out our reviews on Trustpilot (4.7), Google business (4.8) or the many reviews listed on our website with dates & IP addresses - they are overwhelmingly positive. Pls just be aware that folks with an axe to grind leave disproportionately bad reviews - its human nature - but they do influence our ratings and most bad reviews are actually due to the couriers or post office or just being plain unreasonable - like wanting to send back open tins. Would you expect to send back knickers that you have worn? Well - its the same thing. Just take a look at the comments & Youtube reviews on the website - there are dozens of them. thanks ian www.lakelandpaints.co.uk
You these aren't personal messages?

Your repetition of the same marketing post, for all to see, looks a bit desperate.

Oh dear - So explaining the truth is not a good move ?
We should just ignore lies & misinformation ?
How is that helping people to make informed choices ?

ian. www.lakelandpaints.co.uk
Ian, mate, you really aren’t helping yourself here.
One post suggesting people get in touch with any questions is helpful. Several slightly aggressive/whiny ones looks a bit desperate.

If you don’t have anyone handling your social media now it might be time to start.

Unfortunately you can’t do that. But since you want to be enlightened here you go

Hi, this is Ian from Lakeland paints. I’m really sorry to hear that you haven’t found that our paints are of the high standard we expect. If you would like to get in touch with me directly I can look into this for you.

That’s how you reply to issues raised with your product rather than blaming the user and going on about knickers.

I haven't tried them but I have used Victory Colours on most of my house. It's amazing. Went on like a dream, its vegan friendly and low VOC which is import to me as I put in in my little girls room too. Here's a link www.victorycolours.co.uk/ Colours are dreamy.

@LAKELANDpaints you'd do better to just leave this now Ian, you've said far too much and it's reflecting badly on the company. You might benefit from some external media advice.
