Boring or sensible?

We have recently put an offer in on a house and it's been accepted. Probably too late to realistically do anything about it now, our house is sold and we've had the offer accepted, but I just can't shake the feeling that it's a bit 'boring'. It's just a house and not a whole lot more.

DP on the other hand loves it. It's in a good area, walking distance to a top high school where DD will go next year and a decent size.

It's nice enough - but I'd say it's a bonus that it's on the plain side. Gives you tons of scope to customise it to your taste!

burritofan · 29/07/2020 18:35

It is boring but it's in good nick – you won't need to spend money on ripping out kitchens or discovering holes in the floor. You can spend your budget in decorating it to be interesting. It's a blank canvas and could easily have a wow factor as it's got details such as chimney breasts; it's not a box. And nice floors!

PurBal · 29/07/2020 18:37

From the photos think it has a nice feel to it. With good flexible space.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 29/07/2020 18:40

The inside is nice in the outside, and it's the inside that you live in after all. As someone else said, plenty of scope to make it how you like it. The garden to is quite boring but also offers lots of scope for Landscaping etc. Also I don't know where in the country you live but it's an extremely good price.

Itsallthedramamick · 29/07/2020 18:42

House looks nice enough. Do you have a dog? Artificial grass apparently stinks if you let them urinate in the garden.

newhomenewme · 29/07/2020 18:42

Thanks all! The other properties we viewed had a bit more character about them, so I think I'm just a little underwhelmed.

We're just outside Glasgow, if anything it's a little on the pricey side for here!

@Itsallthedramamick ahhhh! We do have a dog, I didn't know this. The current owners also have a dog though and I never notice a stink - we'll need to get tips from them!

It’s nice, not the prettiest house from the outside but you can soften it a bit and the inside is fine

TWAMSWIAO · 29/07/2020 18:45

It’s nice OP and a good type of house to have I believe.

I can’t see the price but imagine it’s under £250k so you’ll not be killing yourselves with a mortgage.

Mooserp · 29/07/2020 18:45

It's a bit of an unusual layout, I don't think it's boring.

Itsallthedramamick · 29/07/2020 18:46

@newhomenewme I have no personal experience as I don't have a dog or artifical grass but have been told it several time. And that is a large area of astro turf!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 29/07/2020 18:51

I really like it.

TuttiFrutti123 · 29/07/2020 18:54

A great kitchen layout, a neutral bathroom and shower room that you can jazz up with any colour accessories you fancy and a really good sized outdoor space.

Once you get your own stuff in place I'm sure it'll be lovely OP.

Heartlake · 29/07/2020 18:54

The furniture is badly laid out especially in the living room. It needs a lovely fireplace, a nice big rug, and the tv where the yellow lamp is. Similarly there's no flow in the family room. And some lovely curvy chairs and table in the kitchen would look gorgeous... Books on a bookcase etc.

randomsabreuse · 29/07/2020 19:05

There's a big premium for that school catchment. Very fashionable so seems quite cheap for that catchment and size especially compared with some of the new build flats around the corner!

Having had character in the past I am definitely aiming for a modern easy to maintain house next time, ideally not quite a new build...

NannyPear · 29/07/2020 19:41

Looks great. We have been looking at moving for schools and Lenzie Academy was on our radar. I'd say that price (with understanding of Scottish O/O system) is about right for the area and catchment. I think it's a lovely house with a great layout for family life

sbplanet · 29/07/2020 21:28

Not got much of a wow factor, seems pleasant enough. What were you wanting?

Dinosauraddict · 29/07/2020 21:33

I think it's the lack of curb appeal.. inside is fine... but doesn't make me go 'wow'. My DH and I always agree we won't buy a house unless we both love it. Sometimes have to wait a little longer, but the perfect one always comes up. You're not committed yet but if you are unhappy and need to pull out, do so ASAP.

my mum has artificial grass and a dog and it doesnt smell - think it rains enough in scotland for any smell to be washed away

TimeWastingButFun · 29/07/2020 21:40

It looks nice enough, it would be a deal breaker for me that it was overlooked but if you don't mind that it's fine and it doesn't need anything doing to it, you can take your time making it personal to you.

Tinkywinkydinkydoo · 29/07/2020 21:44

It’s a nice enough house, nice big garden. I’m sure once you decorate it with your tastes you’ll love it! Although that signpost in front of the drive would drive me dull Grin

OhhhPeee · 29/07/2020 21:49

That post over the driveway would drive me mad.

Other than that, it’s spacious with a good amount of downstairs living space, which offers lots of flexibility to make it your own. I don’t think you’ll regret buying it.

Standrewsschool · 29/07/2020 21:51

It’s not a character house, but it’s perfectly fine and you can easily decorate it to your taste. Maybe paint the house white, get some nice planters etc to give it more curb appeal.

bedface · 29/07/2020 21:56

I think it's quite nice. Not the most exciting house in the world but the downstairs space is good.

Another word of caution about AstroTurf, I saw something about it being quite hot in summer and not great for dogs paws. I think I'd rip that out and have a natural lawn as I have dogs too.

Runkle · 29/07/2020 22:14

I like it. I'd render the outside to brighten it up and mordenise it.
We have artificial grass and a dog - we just hose it and use dettoll on it. It doesn't stink.
