House without a bath?

shittingthreeeyedraven · 16/07/2020 19:47

Looking to move and we’ve seen a house that looks lovely, good location, right number of rooms etc but all of the bathrooms only have showers. Is this a big no no? We have a dc aged 1 so use the bath a couple of times a week. Would you cope without a bath or try to squash a little one into one of the bathrooms? House is lower end of our budget so we could afford to make some changes straight away if needed. Rest of her house is nice looking on paper, we’ve not been to see it yet.

You can get pop up baths for use with kids in a shower cubical

Many try it and see how it goes and then install a bath?

We have one bathroom with a bath the other has a shower. I still live the odd bath.

joyjester · 16/07/2020 19:51

Well I couldn't cope without a bath. If there is more than one bathroom anyway see if one could be fitted in.

Bells3032 · 16/07/2020 20:05

Depending on the size of the bathroom it shouldn't be too hard to replace the shower with a bath or even build a new bathroom altogether if you have some budget to spare

shittingthreeeyedraven · 16/07/2020 20:06

I like a good bath every now and again so I am a bit put off. I hadn’t seen the pop up baths though so I’ll have a look at that. I’m hoping when we go and see it one of them will be big enough to fit a bath in, there’s dimensions for all the rooms except bathrooms on the description which is annoying and no pics of the bathrooms either

Was it a student let? Landlords often get rid if baths and install showers.

Soontobe60 · 17/07/2020 10:16

If there are no bathroom photos I’d assume they need upgrading therefore you could put a bath in one of them.

verybritishproblems · 17/07/2020 10:18

Eek we were going to pull the bath out and replace with a shower. Me and DP don’t use it, it’s just something to stand in while we’re showering. We might want to move in a year or so though, didn’t think no bath might put people off.

Bells3032 · 17/07/2020 10:22

@verybritishproblems it's because it's hard to shower babies. If it's more or a young professionals area showers are more likely 6o be popular

thismeansnothing · 17/07/2020 10:24

Been in our house 10 years. Just a shower in the bathroom. Both kids now 8 and 1 have managed. When they outgrew the baby bath went strait to showers.

We are looking to move. We wouldn't consider a house without a bath unless the house price took into consideration the work necessary to redo the bathroom. And even then, if it was a toss up between 2 similar houses, one with a bath and one without, the one with the bath would win to save on all the mess and disruption of having one fitted.
verybritishproblems · 17/07/2020 10:29

@Bells3032 Ah I don’t have children so didn’t think about this. It’s a mix here, professionals and also young families, might have to think about it.

DorisLessingsCat · 17/07/2020 10:31

You don't need a bath with a small child but it's actually a really good way to entertain them for a bit while also getting them clean.

BackforGood · 17/07/2020 10:33

I think the fact that you will have money in your budget to reconfigure the bathroom means that it shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Whenever you buy a house, you will have to look at all the pros and all the cons and then offer on the house that is the best balance for you.

Yes, you can 'manage' without a bath, by why would you want to ?

winningwhilstlosing · 17/07/2020 10:35

I cannot imagine buying a house without a bath. I have been surprised recently by the number of houses on Rightmove that only have showers - it would definitely put me off. I love my bath!

This gets discussed here on MN on a fairly regular basis.
There are always people who come on and say "I've not had a bath in 10 years - don't miss it at all" but there are also a LOT of posters that say they would really miss a bath.
Like pp, I would only buy a house without a bath if it were priced accordingly to leave me money in the budget to replace and also a good price to balance out the hassle of getting it done.

It wouldn't seem wise, if you are looking to sell within a year, to spend money reducing your market / potential buyers by about 50%

WinterAndRoughWeather · 17/07/2020 10:42

I don’t have kids but I love a bath - you just don’t get properly clean down to the pores in a shower, so every so often I like a good soak.

eaglejulesk · 17/07/2020 10:47

My dream is to have a place with no bath! I never use it but still have to clean the damn thing (the shower is over the bath). It's not unusual not to have a bath in my country.

Chloemol · 17/07/2020 10:53

My bathroom is really small. Bath has come out and a large shower gone in , I used to love baths, hate them now showers quick and easy and would rather relax clean and showered on the settee. Now the bathroom is a lovely size, room to walk around in. It’s up to the next person in the house to put the bath back

AnotherEmma · 17/07/2020 10:55

I don't understand the big dilemma.
View the house, find out how big the bathrooms are, if there is at least one with space for a bath, no problem - you can just put one in.
If it's such a deal breaker that you don't want to waste time viewing it if you can't put a bath in, just ask the agent for the bathroom measurements.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/07/2020 10:57

I like a bath because when I’m knackered lm too lazy to stand up.

I know this is a bit extreme🙈

whereorwhere · 17/07/2020 10:59

No

paap1975 · 17/07/2020 11:00

Our bath has been used as a bath once in the last 6 years. It is used as a shower at least twice every day

gingercat02 · 17/07/2020 11:03

We rarely use our bath but I wouldn't like to not have one. I love a good soak and pamper sometimes. DH uses it after a big run for a muscle soak and its lovely if you have been out in the cold. Wouldn't have contemplated a house with out one with small kids, bath time was the best bit of the day 😂. If possible a separate shower is ideal.

GracieLane · 17/07/2020 11:04

I've lived without a bath but never would again. Having not had one, I now bath every night and sometimes in the morning too. My kids have baths for fun as well as for hygiene. Especially during lockdown where they'd put toys in and bath paint bath crayons etc. I take my iPad in there in the evening and watch Netflix!

GracieLane · 17/07/2020 11:04

We do also have a shower
