Lincoln vs Newark, and is Lincoln very slow paced generally?

Thinking of moving to either but would be nice to hear from the locals or ex-locals. Schools not an issue, its more about which is nicer and also train connections.
I know Newark is better connected but Lincoln now has a better line to London though it's not hugely frequent. Elsewhere trains are SLOW - i.e. to NOttingham and Sheffield, is ther any talk of speedingthese up?
Otherwise Newark just isnt that nive from what I've seen, less to do than in Lincoln?

Finally has been viewing and made an offer (lower than asking) in Lincoln and everything seems veeery relaxed there - vendors seem to take ages to decide, buyers not booking vieings immediately so viewings aer stretched out overa few wek - whereas in the West of the region it's handbags at dawn! Lots of viewings and fast offers. The agent in Lincoln saying 'it's only been on the narket a week (no offers apart from mine) but where I am anything comparable has a crowd of FTB and downsizers as it's a lower price bracket - offers within couple of days.

@CatAndHisKit

btw that agent (William Brown) are so lazy - never any floor plans!
Not an uncommon opinion, WB are not the best. Mundy's have a good reputation.

For those that I know who live in Boultham/Doddington/Swanpool they have no issues and very much like the area, especially for outside activities. Yes, when needing a specific time use Peterborough station.

As someone born in London and lived in various parts ranging from leafy and suburban to deprived and scary after dark, Lincolnshire is worlds apart. Personally I prefer Lincoln as its more cosmopolitan and from a utter snob POV having a Waitrose wins me over. Others will choose Newark. List your top 3 wants and you'd probably get those in 50% of towns in any county across the country. Me, well I'm moving to Lincoln very soon so probably biased!

Go with your heart, you only live once Smile

Newark has a Waitrose too ya know. With a homeware section and a cafe and everything...

Do yo know I forgot about that! Off the A17?
Bluesheep8 · 30/07/2020 06:40

Lincoln has a Waitrose too. Or it did.

CallarMorvern · 30/07/2020 07:00

Newark has a lovely Waitrose (or it did). I used to take DD on a walk round the castle, then along the Trent, there was a lovely sensory garden and always a boat or two to look at. There was also a large kids park just up the road. Then we'd pop into Waitrose cafe for lunch.

I like Lincoln too, especially the cathedral and Steep Hill (but God, it is steep, especially with a pram!). There was a lovely little cheese shop with cafe in Lincoln, but they didn't allow small children, so we refused to go in again on principle once we had DD. But Newark just felt nicer and was more convenient, for just about everything. There's something a bit isolated about Lincoln.

Shmithecat2 · 30/07/2020 11:16

@Poppiesandnettles just behind the Castle station, Ossington Way.

Kolo · 30/07/2020 22:24

@CatAndHisKit the castlegate area I'd say is between castlegate and the market square. So including the main castlegate road (literally across the road from the castle) and including all the pedestrian streets and little arcades between that and the market square. So stodman st, kirkgate, boar lane, middlegate (although middlegate has a few chains on it, like fat face). And the buttermarket arcade in this area leading up to market square is very lovely and has some designer boutiques and small indies.

Kolo · 30/07/2020 22:25

And yes, Newark has a Waitrose - near castlegate station!

Kolo · 30/07/2020 22:27

Is it castlegate station? Or castle? I don't think I've ever used that station, only north gate.

Honeyroar · 30/07/2020 22:39

There used to be a bus station on Castlegate when I lived there, but I don’t remember a station.

Shmithecat2 · 30/07/2020 22:43

@Kolo just Castle Station. No 'gate'. Smile

CatAndHisKit · 30/07/2020 23:32

Kolo ah thanks for that! will look up shops in those streets.

Poppies well so far I@ve been viewing in Lincoln mainly, more on the market in budget! In Newark it's only mailny in Balderton, or right by the station so far, but I@m keeping an eye. My two offers didn't lead anywhere so Newark still am option and need to go and look around properly if I see a house there, but leaning towards Lincoln atm. And yes that area close to Waitrose my first choice. Who knows, we might end up as near neighbours. I wasn't born in London but lived there for 20yrs, btw!

I miss London to be honest. If my house purchase comes good we may be neighbours indeed!

CatAndHisKit · 01/08/2020 01:10

Poppies, I miss it too but I'm happy enough not to live there full time. I'd always want a direct train for my stays back there.
Good luck with your purchase, i@m not there yet - made a couple of offers but no luck so far. It's all gone crazy with people offering over the odds, and I really don't wat to do that. As many predict, prices will fall after this spike of (desperation from buyers).

bracket was meant to be before 'of'
