Lincoln vs Newark, and is Lincoln very slow paced generally?

Thinking of moving to either but would be nice to hear from the locals or ex-locals. Schools not an issue, its more about which is nicer and also train connections.
I know Newark is better connected but Lincoln now has a better line to London though it's not hugely frequent. Elsewhere trains are SLOW - i.e. to NOttingham and Sheffield, is ther any talk of speedingthese up?
Otherwise Newark just isnt that nive from what I've seen, less to do than in Lincoln?

Finally has been viewing and made an offer (lower than asking) in Lincoln and everything seems veeery relaxed there - vendors seem to take ages to decide, buyers not booking vieings immediately so viewings aer stretched out overa few wek - whereas in the West of the region it's handbags at dawn! Lots of viewings and fast offers. The agent in Lincoln saying 'it's only been on the narket a week (no offers apart from mine) but where I am anything comparable has a crowd of FTB and downsizers as it's a lower price bracket - offers within couple of days.

The train links from newarke to London aren’t reliable when it’s winter. So if you need them for commuting to work then I would suggest moving closer to Nottingham / Leicester.

CatAndHisKit · 19/07/2020 21:12

Grumpy I don't need to commute for work but I go to London once a fortnight on average (in normal times) for the cultural stuff/hobby group and to see friends (I used to live there).

Snail yes, I had a look - I don't need a great frequency though occasionally I do use early trains. I could live wit hthat if other things wre much better.

Kolo I wonder where the indie places are? I've only seen the central market square and it was quite mundane. Another poster gave a list of nice places on the waterfront - is that where the ones you mention are?

MyOMy ha it's the opposite! It's not the distance it's the slowtrains! Take Sheffield - train to Lincoln is 1h 20min, whereas Derby which is same distance from it on the nap takes 30min! Fat train to London route. SAme with NOttingham, on a f ast train it would be about 25min from Lincoln.

What about Worksop- inbetween Sheffield and Linc and nice houses for sale? As bad as Retford or nicer?

OP posts:
CatAndHisKit · 19/07/2020 21:18

meant to add, Grumpy why in winter especially - do yo ean get cancelled due to bad weather as the station/tracks are old?

OP posts:
Bunnybigears · 19/07/2020 21:20

My parents live in a Worksop village its very nice but if its arts, culture, indie shops/cafes you want its not the place for you. Sheffield would be better.

Bunnybigears · 19/07/2020 21:25

Sorry I meant their village well hamlet really was very nice Worksop is functional but nothing special.

Beakyok · 19/07/2020 21:51

Avoid Worksop! Grin

CatAndHisKit · 20/07/2020 00:24

Bunny, ah ok, the problem with Sheffield is, I don't know all the various suburbs, and the one I do know and like (around Ecclesall Rd) is out of y price range unless a tiny place. I can see from rightmove that Hillsborough is nice - and there is a tram so possibly that might work but I imagine it's competitive for the few nice houses that are on at the moment.
Bea is it bad then? seems like a well connected town, esp to Sheffield.

OP posts:
CatAndHisKit · 20/07/2020 00:38

Bunny and I don't need lots of indie places, a few would be fine - what Lincoln has is enough for me, I'm just concerned with the slow trains there. Possibly a pace of life is too slow there too but any place would have pros and cons (I'm an ex Londoner but lived in Bristol and E.Mids since, so I'm used to being adaptable as far as there's enough plus points).

Sheffield: look at Meersbrook and Heeley. Cheaper than Eccleshall Road. Dore area is great too. Not sure what you can afford but Sheffield trumps Lincoln in my view.

CatAndHisKit · 21/07/2020 12:53

MyOMy yes I've started to come to that realisation, I think! Have been looking at the areas you mentioned a few days ago - seems very competitive there and small teerraces have gone up in price - but they do come on, so I'm keeping an eye. Are these area relatively safe? and what is the nearest supermarket/s - or an easy bus to retail area?
The issue with Sheffield, it's very confusing if you don't know it - so many buses, trams and spread out that it's hard to know what the connections are like.
Is it easy to get to the train station from these, for example?
Budget would go further in Lincoln but I'm now debating bewtween the two (and Newark still in the pic, sort of).

I don’t live there but I know bits of it. DH was a student there and I have relatives there. There’s a big Tesco on Abbeydale Road. You could look at streets around there. In my view it’s safe. You could also look at Nether Edge. There are buses in this area of the city - no trams as far as I know. I think they are further north and east going into to city centre. I think Sheffield has more to offer in many ways than Lincoln (other than quality of Cathedral).

What’s your budget? Heeley/Meetsbrook was the area they filmed the Corner Shop back in time recently. It’s a family area.

Kolo · 22/07/2020 16:07

@CatAndHisKit the area between the castle and the market square (Castlegate) is full of indies. Not sure what the riverside area is. There's quite a few 'out of town' shops along the waterfront going towards Lincoln which aren't exactly unique or quirky Confused. Although the waterfront near the castle has some lovely cafes and restaurants.

There's some new eateries that I haven't been to yet (covid), but my fave places to eat are gannets (amazing lunch/brunch), Thai Sabi for amazing Thai food. Koinonia which is in a really ugly arcade thing behind the old M&S but the food is fabulous. Prince Rupert and organ grinder are fabulous pubs (organ grinder is part of the blue monkey brewery - local 'chain'). And the shops round castlegate tend to be indies (with a boots, monsoon etc thrown in).

CatAndHisKit · 22/07/2020 21:06

Kolo thanks - I think the poster was talking about the same 'waterfront' area. Sorry if you aready commented on that (so many posts over two threads!) but how do you think Newark compares to Lincoln?
I@m now mainly looking in Lincoln but you aer tempting me re Newark more and more - my only issue is, not many houses in the centre in budget - there is one off London rd - is that a reasonble area? I think it's a good 20min walk to centre but maybe in reality faster. Balderton - several good houses and space but I think it's too far out as I prefer to be able to walk either to centre or the station NOrthgate) or both. I'm still attracted to the train speed from Newark.

My yes I've been looking at these and would live there, but in my budget I can only find a two bed terrace there (prices gone up a lot in 5yrs when I last looked) - I mean some of then are '3 beds' but the second bed is TINY and there is an attic - I need two beds on same floor as a bathroom. I can afford something better in Hillsborough or some other areas but I just don't have time now to travel around all these options. The styling is fab though in many of those terraces , also in Crookes (young hip owners haha).

OP posts:
Honeyroar · 22/07/2020 21:28

Balderton isn’t that far out. I lived there as a student and didn’t have a car. Everyone cycles in Newark, it’s so flat.

Shmithecat2 · 22/07/2020 23:58

London Road is nice as long as its the Newark end and not the Baldo end. I personally would not like to live in Balderton...

Kolo · 25/07/2020 08:14

I so rarely go to Lincoln I couldn't really compare, sorry. I'm just a few miles from Newark so tend to go there, or Nottingham if I need a bigger range of shops.

And because I live in one of the villages, I'm not exactly sure about living in Newark itself. London rd looks nice near the Newark end. I've driven and walked round that a bit to use the library and the skatepark with my kids, and the theatre and civil war centre is in that area too - between London rd and bottom of beacon hill rd. Some very old and lovely houses, lots of buildings from the civil war era (the plague sent the parliamentarians away from Newark before they had the chance to destroy it, so lots of historical buildings still around. Greggs is in the old governors house -

Kolo · 25/07/2020 08:22

Attempting to add photo of Newark Greggs 😂.

I really like Newark, and I don't work for the Tourist Information. I love how it's surrounded by countryside so it's got a very rural feel to it - the cattle market is just across the railway line from the castle. You're just as likely to bump into a farmer as a London based PR manager. I have friends here who are farmers and friends who work in London. Newark (and the villages around) have ploughing matches and county shows). The market square is beautiful, lined with buildings that are hundreds of years old. There's so much history, and lots of green space around. You can't go very far in Newark without hitting the Trent, and there's gorgeous walks along the banks.

One of my daughters friends refuses to step in this building, according to her it’s haunted www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-81067108.html

My0My · 25/07/2020 12:30

Crookes is strudent area but perfectly OK. There are some less expensive roads off the A61 in Meersbrook and Heeley. Certainly you can get three beds easily. It is common in terraced houses in Sheffield to use the attic as the third bedroom. Many have staircases built in to do that. You should find two beds and bathroom on same floor without any problems. However it is ore difficult to find a second bathroom but you do not need that I guess. Look around Newfield School. Also Bramhall Lane. I do not think prices have gone up that much in these areas. Still workers terraced houses with a bit of garden. Nothing flash. What is your budget?

Oooo I've been to zizzi's there once. Didn't feel any spirits 😬. The apartment looks nice, though! That's where I'd live if I lived in newark. If it got the castle view side of the building.

BikerWife · 25/07/2020 15:22

I live between Newark and Lincoln and love Lincoln! I like the Brayford pool area to sit out on a summers evening having a cocktail, it has a lovely buzz. Uphill we enjoy the independent restaurants and shops. There is quite a bit going on but you have to look for things if you know what I mean... I follow all the venues and theatres on FB to keep up with anything interesting. The annual steam punk festival is quite a sight. I think it's a very safe city (I work at the hospital in Lincoln).

Depends where you are going to live and what you want, the town has areas that are not so nice as well as very lively student areas that I would avoid! There are some very nice villages with strong community spirit in Lincolnshire.

I worked as a community nurse in worksop and it was not nice Shock. I would definitely not live there!

Lincoln may be too sleepy for some, but only you can know if it's what you want. Newark is OK but we rarely go there as just find Lincoln has more and is nicer.

@Kolo I just googled it out of interest because she swears she saw a woman ghost by the toilets and we just teased her, she won’t go back and I’ve just found this hauntedhistoryoflincolnshire.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/newark-2/ossington-lodge/ Shock 👻
