How much did your new kitchen cost?

Sorry if this has been done to death, but I'm wondering what a new kitchen might cost.

Ideally with quartz or composite worktops.

Would knocking down a wall massively increase costs?

Thank you

ours is 9 units and laminate worktops from DIY and was £3000, other costs were plasterer £500, fitter £800, Electrician £500 (had to put new sockets and circuit in) flooring and paint £200, tiles £200, this is in Yorkshire and fitter is ex son in law so slightly cheaper family rate kitchen is 14 ft long 11 ft wide quartz worktops are expensive

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/07/2020 17:08

Midway through planning ours. Quartz added a fortune to our invoice. In fact opting for laminate and buying our own appliances took our howdens invoice from 11k to just under 4K

nicelyneurotic · 12/07/2020 17:25

Thanks! So I might be able to do it for around 11k then? Did that not include the cost to fit it?

My cost to fit the kitchen is c4k and the units 4.5k appliances I can do for under 1k and I haven’t bought the floor tiles. I have a small kitchen though. Depends on the size and also overall cost of your house, there’s no point me putting a high end 30k kitchen in a house of my size and worth

Gnarlytoe · 12/07/2020 17:42

Howdens clerkenwell gloss cabinets (6 towers, 7 wall cabinets and 9 base units) double oven, job, full size freezer, full size fridge, dishwasher and extractor cost 7k.
40m2 water resistant laminate flooring 1k.
Duropal worktops and matching splashback £900
Electrician £1250
Kitchen fitter to include plastering, painting etc £4500.

So around 14k all in - and it’s worth every penny 😊

Smallgoon · 12/07/2020 19:53

DIY Kitchens Norton shaker in cobham blue and dove grey - 4 wall units, 6 base units and two tall units = £4k
Quartz worktop = £3k
Appliances = £3.5k
Tiles and tiler = £450
Electrics = £250 (several new sockets, new circuit, lights etc)
Kitchen fitter = £2k (I'm London based, kitchen fitter is a family friend and he is also creating a bespoke pantry for me with a pocket door and false wall)
Pantry materials = £500

So total is circa £13,200 which is more than I thought it would cost- eek! My kitchen is also fairly small.

rach2713 · 12/07/2020 20:04

Oh me mine isn't costing that much.
We are having new cooker new fridge freezer new dishwasher all walls plastered and painted and new
cabinets and flooring all for about 2k as my husband is doing the lot himself..

MyHomeIsMyHappyPlace · 12/07/2020 20:21

£20k - including quartz tops and one piece of solid wood top on a 3m x1.2m long island. We bought appliances separately to save money and fitted it ourselves to save about £4K. Would have been a lot more if we hadn't done this. Also wanted a framed kitchen but that was £££.

MyHomeIsMyHappyPlace · 12/07/2020 20:23

If you include flooring, tiles, sockets etc etc., prob another £2k...? But it was part of an overall extension so not sure on exact prices...

Burplecutter · 12/07/2020 20:27

£6k including all appliances.
DH taught himself how to fit it using YouTube videos and did an amazing job saving us thousands. I was ok letting him try because I knew if he made a mistake on something like a unit or some trim, replacing that would be cheaper than a fitter and he wanted to learn.
He took his time to get it right and took pride in it. But it only took him 2.5weeks.
Was the biggest project he's taken on, he wasn't a diyer before that, and it's spurred on a lot more projects by seeing that if he just measures right and takes his time then he can do what others can. He wants to be the man that can, like when DC has children then they'll know grandad will fix it.

nicelyneurotic · 12/07/2020 21:03

Thank you all so much. I'm in London so it looks like I'll have to budget around 14k-20k.

What are the duropal worktops like? I'd not heard of them?

OP posts:
Smallgoon · 12/07/2020 21:41

I think the Duropal worktops are basically a brand of the laminate worktops that DIY Kitchens stock

Elpheba · 13/07/2020 19:51

I’m going for diy kitchens- £8600 on units and appliances, £3500 on quartz worktop (lots of it but I think/hope it will be worth it!). DH is an electrician and will fit it too but I imagine there will be another £1000 on lighting/painting & decorating/ new radiator.

GenderApostate19 · 13/07/2020 20:41

It’s really easy to build your own kitchen if you buy ready built carcasses, you just need decent tools.
We did everything but the worktop, which we paid a local joiner to fit.

Our gloss units / handles + driftwood worktop with fancy trim and built in oven and microwave cost £3600 from wren, they made us an extra wide door so we could have storage at the side of the washer.
You can save lots by sourcing your own sink and oven/hob and don’t pay £500+ for a fancy swing out basket, you can get them for £100!
We have a black glass sink /drainer that was £250 instead of £700, a black glass huge gas hob that was a fraction of what wren wanted.

Ok so we’ve been reflecting and deciding that the 5k quote to install the kitchen is quite high. So I’ve called more workmen- howden recommendations, 1 guy was busy but said he works sometimes with this other guy who could probably fit it in. He just came round and quoted us £1500....Shock.Says he doesn’t need the money any more (50yrs old, had a heart attack etc)....checked him out online, his adddress is as he told me, round the corner from our house etc. Only slight question mark is companies house says he has dissolved his company is 2019, before that was 2015-2018 before dissolved again. Is that an issue or is tax filing, paperwork etc not my concern?

whataboutbob · 16/07/2020 19:05

If people fold their company they cannot be sued for poor work, as you can only sue the company not the person. We had issues with a builders work he’d wrapped up his company, needless to say he never answered our calls/ emails. Maybe ask him for references from recent clients?

FurierTransform · 16/07/2020 19:07

My last kitchen cost around £7k all in, which came about from a combination of DIY-Kitchens for the cabinets, oak worktops from worktop-express, & driving a hard bargain on the new appliances (all were AEG/Bosch)

I'm planning another shortly which is roughly twice the size but i'm aiming to keep costs under £10k by doing a similar thing but sourcing 2nd hand lightly used premium appliances - It's very surprising how many people in London seem to rip out & sell for a tuppence a 2-3yr old barely-used kitchen with all Siemens appliances etc.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/07/2020 19:10

Yeh the suing issue I hadn’t thought of- should I get a copy of his indemnity insurance etc....wouldn’t get paid until the end of the job, and I know his address. Worth a punt?

Smallgoon · 16/07/2020 19:13

@OnlyFoolsnMothers £5k to fit the kitchen - crikey! Which part of the country are you in, and roughly how much work would be involved? I'm London based and had anticipated paying around £2k to have mine fitted. In the end, I'll be paying £1350 since my brother's carpenter friend will fit it for me. I got my plumbing and electrical work done by somebody else, so carpenter will just fit the kitchen.

You think 5k was bad- I had quotes from 3-10k

London/ Kent border
So I need the walls plastered and a new ceiling, 4 spot lights, fit the kitchen, tilling the floor and turn the door way into an arch- but in a small kitchen 2x3 metres.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/07/2020 19:19

Fitting includes the plumbing and oven/ induction hob fitting and 1 led under cabinet light

Smallgoon · 16/07/2020 19:26

Hmmm, so it seems as though you're wanting all electrical and plumbing work included. I imagine the plastering and arched doorway is adding to costs too - I'd deffo steer clear of the chap offering to do it all for £1.5k!

Can't you get the other elements done separately by a plumber and electrician, or are you wanting the fitter to project manage this for you? Presumably you're not expecting the fitter to be a one-stop shop and do the rewriting/plumbing as that's a big no-no on MN!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/07/2020 19:38

I’m looking for 1 company to do all that- because I already am having to get a separate company to remove the artex from the walls, and my gas engineer to move the boiler. Having 5diff work men on top of that would mean this job takes months.
I was hoping as long as I check insurance, gas safety Certs etc I would be fine.
