How much did your new kitchen cost?

Sorry if this has been done to death, but I'm wondering what a new kitchen might cost.

Ideally with quartz or composite worktops.

Would knocking down a wall massively increase costs?

Thank you

@OnlyFoolsnMothers I don’t know if indemnity/ liability insurance would cover for poor work. I thought it’s for graver issues eg injury as a result of his work. But I could be wrong on that. Google the guy, maybe see if he has any county court judgements. It’s really hard to say. Is £1500 just for fitting the units or does it also include electrical and plumbing work?

Apologies I missed your last 2 posts!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/07/2020 21:27

Ohh can I check for county court judgements?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/07/2020 21:31

I’m also wondering it’s such a “small” amount of money why would he bother to even do a shoddy job over 10days for such a small con.
His fb page has over 100 pics of jobs he’s done. He also restored a local cricket club house that burned to the ground by way of supporting local. Am I just cynical ?

whataboutbob · 16/07/2020 21:45

You can, at: www.trustonline.org.uk/
It will show if he has/ had unpaid debts. So not the be all and end all, but could be useful to check.

Wickes kitchen with their thin laminate worktops (forget the name). £14k. Including fitting and appliances. South east (not London) and what I would consider a small kitchen (no space for an island or a table).

whataboutbob thank you!

Because he'll then invent a number of issues and before you know it, you're paying £££ more, and will prob end up having to pay £££ to fix any issues you find with his workmanship.

In my personal experience, some tradespeople promise the world and quote low, in order to get the job.

whataboutbob · 17/07/2020 10:10

The fact that he says he’s had a heart attack also rings lark bells. That will be the perfect cover for him to go missing in action whenever he wants to. I’ve had too many tradesmen use the “ I’m I’ll” “ my family member is ill” excuse. Sounds heartless but in one case it was a definite lie, it all came out in court after he’d conned his pensionner neighbour out of his life savings. And walked out on a job my trusting mum had fully paid for.

whataboutbob · 17/07/2020 10:10

“Alarm bells”!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/07/2020 10:56

thanks all- paid for the ccj checks- 2 unresolved against him, and 1 unresolved against the company.
Won’t be touching with a barge pole!

I fucking hate workmen- sorry but I do. They need a profit, I need an honest hard working labourer. Why is it so hard!

whataboutbob · 17/07/2020 11:00

Think you dodged a bullet, well done.

LBOCS2 · 17/07/2020 11:01

I sourced our quartz worktop separately and paid just over £2k for an L shaped kitchen with under mounted sink - including fitting and upstands. Definitely shop around, I was really pleased with ours (we used Topsco).

Smallgoon · 17/07/2020 22:10

@OnlyFoolsnMothers How did you come across him, out of interest? Word of mouth, of via a trades site?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/07/2020 23:18

So I called howdens and asked for some tradesmans numbers, for comparative quotes. called one who said he was busy but could recommend the person he works with sometimes, and that was him.

nicelyneurotic · 20/07/2020 19:58

Thanks everyone for replying. @Elpheba your kitchen sounds similar to the one I'll probably go for (I dont have the energy to source second hand bits and worried I'll get it wrong but hats off to those of you who do!) Fitting seems to vary wildly.
