Are detached houses really worth THAT much more

I live on the end of a terrace of three houses, and my home is worth £220k. I really want to move to a detached house because my neighbours annoy me and I'm sick of living on top of other people. Sorry if that sounds snobby Blush

I've been looking at detached houses and to get the same square footage as I have now, in the same area, I'd be looking at 300k+! I can't justify spending that much more unless it would gain me more internal space as well. Please either convince me to embrace my terraced existence or tell me why living in a detached house is worth so much more £££!

I think the trend for mounting flat-screen TVs on the wall must have made things worse over the years.

Detached was definitely worth a big premium for us. I would struggle to go back.

Houses are worth what someone will pay for them. Detached is definitely worth the extra

Asgoodasarest · 13/07/2020 09:50

@Thecazelets I agree. Plus wood burners and big open spaces. Lots of ways for sound to travel with some of the current trends.

True - also wooden floors and laminate. Hell if you're underneath them but not great if you're next door either.

I'm about to move to a smaller house but detached.

Currently 1930s semi with paper thin walls. I have the worlds noisiest family living next door. The woman has no filter on the volume of her gob, they play instruments until late (10.30pm last night). The kids wind each other up then cry then she shouts at them for crying. She does bangra classes from the conservatory (this a new one since lockdown), it was 11pm Saturday night and she was at it.

Then there's the LOUD sex....I cannot wait to escape them!!!

Yeah I agree. I've witnessed in relatives houses that the sound reverberates through the wall!

We’re in a terrace and having an absolute nightmare with our bloody neighbours. I despise them and the sooner we can move (hopefully to a detached house) the better. I’ll be packing the removal van myself and flicking the vs as we drive off into the sunset. I reckon it is worth every extra penny.

boredboredboredboredbored · 13/07/2020 14:48

@Purplegloves I love the thought of flicking the Vs to mine too!! I've not told them I'm moving but if they ask I'll say the noise has finally done me in 😡

Movinghouseatlast · 13/07/2020 17:02

Yes, it's worth it! I lived in a detached house for 20 years and it was bliss.

Sadly I was forced to move because of neighbour issues when a new family moved in after 18 years of harmony. The guy was akin to a psycopath and I couldn't bear living bedide him.

I now live in a semi as I couldn't afford what I wanted in a detached version. I live in fear of hearing the neighbours through the wall ( it is halls ajoining so I can't hear them).

I would say a detached is well worth the money.

Roselilly36 · 13/07/2020 17:19

We live in a detached house, worth every penny, never hear neighbours noise & and they don’t hear ours, I even had a neighbour say how quiet our children were.

Topseyt · 13/07/2020 17:48

Apart from our London flat and DH's parents mid-terrace town house (where I lived for a year with them) I have always lived in detached properties.

Detached is absolutely worth the money. In the mid terrace townhouse you could even hear the neighbours using the toilet.

Purplegloves · 13/07/2020 20:21

@boredboredboredboredbored Ahh, just think of that sweet moment when you can tell them you’re going to a wonderful new house so won’t have to hear them ever again!! It brings me great comfort and just about stops me from hammering my fist right through the wall and screaming at them to stop making noise loud enough to shake the house all the damn time!
