Are detached houses really worth THAT much more

I live on the end of a terrace of three houses, and my home is worth £220k. I really want to move to a detached house because my neighbours annoy me and I'm sick of living on top of other people. Sorry if that sounds snobby Blush

I've been looking at detached houses and to get the same square footage as I have now, in the same area, I'd be looking at 300k+! I can't justify spending that much more unless it would gain me more internal space as well. Please either convince me to embrace my terraced existence or tell me why living in a detached house is worth so much more £££!

The reasons you want one are why it’s worth more.

SunbathingDragon · 10/07/2020 22:19

Why don’t you look for link detached instead?

nettytree · 10/07/2020 22:20

I have a detached house. But I have 4 different gardens attached to mine. No different than a terrace or semi.

InfiniteSheldon · 10/07/2020 22:22

Yes worth every penny extra

tractorvancar · 10/07/2020 22:23

It's wonderful. I doubled my spend to get detached. I don't have to worry about hoovering late at night when it suits me to do so, same with washing machine, I don't worry about the baby crying when Im trying all the soothing options but nothing is working, DC can play with loud noisy toys, the dog can bark at the postman and it doesn't matter, we can do diy when we want, I can turn the radio up as loud as I like if I want a dance. So not only do I avoid the noise of others, I'm not tied into excessively minding my own noise. Its a higher level of privacy for me.

My neighbours are still annoying in their garden noise wise though so not totally perfect.

alwje19282 · 10/07/2020 22:25

I thought it was worth it. I wouldn't go back to a non detached house by choice now.

SpeedofaSloth · 10/07/2020 22:25

Ours is worth it. I love not hearing the neighbours or worrying about my noisy kids.

Everypony · 10/07/2020 22:27

Totally worth it. Once you go detatched you will never want to go back to a terrace or semi.

eurochick · 10/07/2020 22:28

I love it. Not needing to worry about neighbours being disturbed by music or tantrums is great. Not having their music or tantrums disturb me is even better. Gardens are usually wider too (as there will be space on each side of the house) so you are not as close to neighbours outside as well.

This is why:
I really want to move to a detached house because my neighbours annoy me and I'm sick of living on top of other people.

Perceptionmyth · 10/07/2020 22:29

Totally worth it although you still have to be mindful of noise unless you are in the middle of a field

gardenchaos · 10/07/2020 22:29

Totally worth it, I live in a tiny detached and have no regrets, I'd never trade up in size if it meant sharing walls again.

Because not being able to hear my tv for the neighbours tv blaring through the wall was torture. Listening to it until midnight when I get up for work at 5:30am was torture. Hearing her bellow at her husband set me on edge, the door slamming, the teen kicking the door in, the banging, scraping of chairs on their noisy laminate floor.....it was all torture.

Now, being able to go to bed and sleep when I want, instead of waiting for the neighbours to turn off their tv is bliss and totally worth over stretching ourselves.

I would rather live on beans on toast forever than go back to sharing a wall with inconsiderate, noisy twats who damaged my mental and physical health.

Pipandmum · 10/07/2020 22:59

Yes. I'm moving to a much more expensive area next year which means trading my large detached for a terrace or even a flat - praying for good neighbours!

whenwillthemadnessend · 10/07/2020 23:16

Totally worth it. We moved to detached in feb and it's bliss pure bliss. It's on a bloody high street ffs and it's still quieter than my old semi estate full of kids and more kids.

(Teens here. Just have headphones in all day)

unicornparty · 10/07/2020 23:23

I've just bought a detached and am super excited! Grin

Itsarattrap · 10/07/2020 23:24

Yes

NopeJustNope · 10/07/2020 23:28

Absofuckinglutely!!! For all reasons mentioned! I have lived next door to nutters, nosey parkers, weirdo's, and did actualy have some really nice neibs once, but, now detached!!! Ahhhhhhh! Wonderfull!

messyhouselady · 10/07/2020 23:39

I NEED a detached house. Having neighbours through the wall is actually ruining my life. I’m constantly on edge, constantly worrying about it.

Can not wait till we can move.

ChicCroissant · 10/07/2020 23:43

They do carry a premium but I prefer a detached, and I've always had fab neighbours.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 10/07/2020 23:53

I haven't lived in a terraced house since my early 20s and am convinced every time I read stuff on here that my detached house is worth every penny. We're thinking of down sizing in next few years but 'not being able to hear neighbours is top of my list.

The older I get the more I think detached - and at least half a mile from other people...

BackforGood · 11/07/2020 00:21

You've answered your own question in your opening post though.
Of course people will pay a premium for detached house.
It's supply and demand.
If you are on MN more than once in a blue moon, you'll see daily threads about at best irritating neighbours.

We can't all afford them, but, given a choice (ie the money) then wouldn't everyone prefer a detached house ?
