How would you make our house look nice?

It's a 1930s semi-d house with that orangey brown pebbledash covering. Probably on the smaller end of those houses. Windows like attachment.

There is a small drive and garden which is just empty and stone like (bar the tiny drive). It just looks a bit 'meh'.

Some houses in the next street have painted theirs white with the red brickwork edging, but cant work out if it actually looks any nicer.

Thoughts?

I think definitely paint the render but I wouldn't do the red brickwork. Maybe a light grey?

CrystalDeCanter · 04/07/2020 09:35

What's your ball-park budget OP?

Enough to paint it or new windows and landscaping too?

GreyGardens88 · 04/07/2020 09:37

Paint it white with some climbing plants on the wall

Please don't paint it grey!

kojolo · 04/07/2020 09:39

Prepared to be stoned for this but in Cornwall those houses are often painted pastel pink or duck egg blue. I think it looks so cheerful.

CrystalDeCanter · 04/07/2020 09:40

I agree kojolo a pretty pink or blue house with white edging is gorgeous.

TARSCOUT · 04/07/2020 09:45

Paint it white or cream. You get sample pots for masonry paint. Please don't paint it grey.

You could paint your front door and get new door handle letterbox etc . Nice higher height pot either side of front door. Dress your windows with matching blinds. Get nice pots for plants for your drive.

daisychain1620 · 04/07/2020 09:46

What about painting it all cream with either brown or white edging and a few cheerful plant pots.

floppybit · 04/07/2020 09:50

Just don't paint it grey!

Flutterpieandpinkieshy · 04/07/2020 10:00

Paint it whatever colour you want OP. It's your house... Grey is lovely when used as a backdrop for colourful trailers and climbers. Or brick slip it.

isseywith4vampirecats · 04/07/2020 10:05

our houses are similar to yours this is what a couple of people in our street have done sorry its a bit blurry took it through my window

I’d paint it all white (pebbledash and edging) and focus on the garden and get lots of lovely plants. A poorly maintained garden or just barren land in front of a house with no greenery does nothing for curb appeal!

TheHandStandBand · 04/07/2020 10:12

Our old house had this, I hate pepple dash. We didn't do anything as we moved but a few doors down rendered it and it looked fab! Was an off white colour...if it was our long term house I would have done the same!

CarolVordermansArse · 04/07/2020 10:32

Painting it will mean you will need to do it every few years but a very pale pink or blue would look really good, I have seen some houses painted in what is meant to be terracotta and they are bright orange, so be careful if you want subtle colour.

I also would not paint it grey, even a pale grey, our road is looking dull because of the increase in grey houses and for some reason the white/cream ones sell and the grey ones don't. It is a colour used on the updated houses, all new windows, no gardens, just paving, floodlights everywhere, character removed and front doors that look like businesses. A pastel pink or blue, or maybe yellow would make it look like a home.

sbplanet · 04/07/2020 10:54

I quite like the pebbledash as it is, and the quoining is more understated in grey.

Instead concentrate on making the front garden/drive more welcoming. Lift some slabs and plant some lavenders or similar, evergreens. Even a couple of (twee) bay trees in pots at the front door! Or a small porch over the front door?

Boohoohoohooho · 04/07/2020 11:22

I’d get someone to clean the moss of your roof. It will make it look a lot better but I think it’s a big mistake to paint the pebbledash. I would be put off by the thought of having to repaint it.

The house looks like it does. It’s not a pretty house but there is nothing wrong with it.

Poetryinaction · 04/07/2020 11:25

I would render and paint it cream. We painted our old house blue and it was lovely, but caused problems when we sold.

DelphiniumBlue · 04/07/2020 11:31

If you paint the pebble dash you will have to redo it every 3 years or so for the rest of the house's life. That is a major financial and time commitment. Don't do it! Spend the money on the garden, paint the door and windows, grow something up the wall, anything but paint the pebbledash!

cakeandchampagne · 04/07/2020 11:36

There might be a difference between painting/changes to please yourself and painting/changes with the intention of selling.

justaweeone · 04/07/2020 11:37

I'd paint or render it in white
I've attached some photos of what I mean and an interesting link

Oh meant to say that I wouldn't do for red brick edging and also planting in front garden with lavenders etc
Here is a photo of a house in a very subtle grey as well

Depends how long you plan to stay there, I'd say. If it's your long-term home and you're happy to repaint every few years, then render can look great. But poorly maintained painted render looks worse than the pebbledash! Our old house was pebbledash and we made do with nicely painted front door, climbing plants, pretty pots etc. Here's a pic.

Insulate the walls outside with the foam cladding stuff, (Save you a fortune in winter and be environmentally friendly and a good incentive to a future buyer) then white pebbledash or whatever over the top would look good. With a nice front door in your favourite colour.

I’m considering the Wet And Forget stuff you connect to your hose and hose the roof to get rid of mould and moss. Apparently they use it on the Sydney opera house. It was on QVC U.K. recently but I dont know if they have any left. Roofs look better when moss free for sure and it’s an easy fix you can do yourself if your water pressure is ok and your roof not too high!
There was another thread on here the same last month. Have a search and see what was said then. Perhaps search for render or pebbledash or similar.

Yamashita40 · 04/07/2020 13:06

My house used to be like that. When it was renovated 8 years ago the pebble dash was removed and replaced with white render. The bottom metre is still brick.

The house next door is still pebble dashed and it looks awful in comparison and one by one people in the street are doing the same.

The entire house was renovated for a total of 50k so it mustn't have been that expensive.

Mind you do have to have it painted every other year. The people over the road had composite render put on instead and it has no upkeep but is obviously more expensive.

Yamashita40 · 04/07/2020 13:09

You can see here our house and next door.

mencken · 04/07/2020 14:34

be very careful washing the roof and NEVER let someone do it with a pressure washer. The only way to do it properly is to climb up and remove the moss by hand.
