Does this sound right for movers costs? I’m clueless.

Moving from midlands to South Wales (3hr drive) and have been quoted 2k to move 3 bed semi’s worth of stuff.

Does this sound about right or expensive? I’ve never used movers before and I was shocked but maybe I’m being naive?

We paid £500, but only to move about four or 5 miles… Would recommend shopping around.

Whathappenedtothelego · 23/06/2020 10:23

I would get a few quotes, but that doesn't sound unreasonable to me.
I think we paid about 3k or so, further distance, about 7 hour drive.

Does it include packing/unpacking and packing materials?

Insurance will be a big part of it, it's not just about how far you have to go.
Sometimes you can make savings if other people are making a similar move and you can share the lorry space.

BigMamaFratelli · 23/06/2020 10:33

Depends what it includes.

We paid £800 including some packing materials for 4 bed semi. Moved about 4 miles to the other side of town. We packed and unpacked ourselves.

Readysetcake · 23/06/2020 10:51

Just had someone around for a second quote and another on Thursday. But I guess it is a lot of work and they would have to do it over two days due to working hours. So maybe 2k isn’t unreasonable. Moving is so fucking expensive. I revoking with estate agent fees, stamp duty, solicitor, moving we will be looking at 15k. Makes my stomach feel queezy.

Does that include packing?
About three years ago I paid £640 for packing and moving a one bed flat 15 minutes up the road (£150 for packing and materials, rest for moving). So yours sounds ok in comparison.

Sooverthemill · 23/06/2020 11:58

We moved from Bedfordshire to Suffolk ( 120 miles) in 2016. 4 bedroom house. Far too much stuff. We paid about £2500. They packed and that took 2 days and the move itself was 2 days so 4 days in all. The biggest lorry I've ever seen except at a port!

Skyliner001 · 23/06/2020 12:21

Should have said that ours was three bedroom to 3 bedroom, and included all packing boxes, and materials, even tape.

Loofah01 · 23/06/2020 12:36

3 bed house move with packing, distance about 2 miles in surrey for us was £1350 last year.
Don't think your quote is above reasonable to me.

user1471530109 · 23/06/2020 12:38

Packing and moving £600 moving an hour away. About 3 yes ago. Best money I spent over the whole stressful saga.

CMOTDibbler · 23/06/2020 12:40

With a two day move its always going to be much more than a local move. The good news is that packing only added a very small amount relatively to our long moves

bluefoxmug · 23/06/2020 12:41

including packing/unpacking that sounds about right.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 23/06/2020 12:58

if you're moving areas, do you get movers from where you are, or where you're going to? Or do you go with the cheaper option/most highly recommended?

Sooverthemill · 23/06/2020 14:16

I had local movers to where we were selling because it reduced overnight costs ( they would have had to stay near our old house 2 nights) and they only stayed 1 night at new house ( in their lorry. We bought them fish n chips and beers and let them use our shower). We used a big firm
And it wasn’t the cheapest or most expensive, we chose the people who seemed most thoughtful ( we have very sick DD who has quite tricky needs. They packed her up last and got her stuff to new house first so she could go straight to bed when we arrived).

areallthenamesusedup · 23/06/2020 14:47

I can really recommend getting someone to pack for you. Its a relatively small part of the overall costs and saves a MASSIVE amount of your time. Best money I have ever spent!

endlessginandtonic · 23/06/2020 14:49

I agree with getting the packing done, it only costs hundreds in a moving cost of thousands and makes a huge difference.

Readysetcake · 24/06/2020 07:58

Seems like it was a reasonable Quote then. Thank you for the replies. Still waiting in others. My DH seems to be determined not to spend it and I know he’s going to push for us to do it ourselves. Which would be a fucking nightmare with all the stuff we have and two young kids. I’d happily pay twice that to get someone to do it if we could afford it. We’re going to need a new car after we move so trying to keep costs down but I can envisage a world of stress and arguments if we try and do it ourselves.

I have just been quoted £4k by 2 companies and im not moving a lot of things (one bed, no wardrobes, one kitchen table, one 2 seater sofa etc)... I've decided they are taking the pee so im hiring a van and doing it with my family.
They also quoted £350 to unscrew 16 screws and pull out my washing machine and tumble dryer and pull out the plugs!...

Fuming!

We are moving from Bucks to Suffolk... but still!

Oopsiedaisyy · 27/06/2020 22:40

Paying 400 including packing materials, for moving a three bed cottage although I'm packing myself.
Moving 5 miles.

Also taking apart and putting back up 3 beds.

Bluesheep8 · 28/06/2020 08:33

I used to work in the industry. That sounds cheap to me. Does it include insurance?

Bluesheep8 · 28/06/2020 08:34

And packing?

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 28/06/2020 08:41

Shop around. I got quotes ranging from 900 to 12000 (!) for the same job. I couldn’t have done it myself for 900 so I don’t know where that figure came from. In the end I went somewhere in the middle to ensure insurances etc. All in order.

Readysetcake · 28/06/2020 22:32

Quotes have ranged from 900 to 3k which includes insurance. We decided to go with the cheapest where they just load and unload. No dismantling or packing. The next up would have been 1.5 k more for basically taking apart two beds and a wardrobe (no packing). So we did that ourselves this weekend. Was easy enough.

OP posts:
gigchuckedout56 · 29/06/2020 07:30

You can definitely haggle. We got each quote to knock off a couple hundred so it's worth asking (we're rubbish at haggling by the way, literally just asked what was best price as we had a few companies to hear from). Ended up paying £900 for 3 bed terrace (with a LOT of stuff stored in the loft) to move 5 miles.

Wish we'd paid for packing as was only an extra £300-400. We reckon we paid at least that in boxes/bubble wrap and tape plus had all the hassle of packing.

Bluesheep8 · 01/07/2020 08:20

Packing actually adds comparatively little to the cost. Removal firms will only consider dropping prices if they don't have enough work for that particular time. If there busy, they will hold their price.
