Is Hazel Grove a good place to live?

immdu · 22/06/2020 14:46

Hi there!
I moved from UK for a few months and I am planning to move with my aunt to another apartment.

We would like to know about the Hazel Grove area. Is it a good place to live? Is it dangerous in any way? How is the traffic there?

We dont have kids, but i know this is a good place to talk to people.

Thank you Grin

Where is Hazel Grove? The only one I've ever known was when I was a kid in Sydenham, SE26, and it was a council estate. I never knew anyone, or went, there and don't even know if it is still in existence but am sure you don't mean that place.

You can google 'information on Hazel Grove....' and a lot will come up but pease do say where it is, somebody may actually know the place.

Good luck with your move.

immdu · 22/06/2020 15:33

Sorry! :D It is:
Commercial Rd
Hazel Grove
Stockport
SK7 4AA

I already read a lot about it, but I dont know how much I can rely on the info i am reading... Thats why i came here to ask for real people about it.

Thank you!

I love nearby in Marple. Hazel Grove is OK but nothing special. The town centre is along the very busy A6 and is run down and shabby looking. Houses are mixed from what I see when I drive through. What are you looking for in an area? If it's a village feel, try nearby Poynton, Marple or Woodford. Hazel Grove always feels a bit run down, shabby and congested to me.

immdu · 22/06/2020 15:45

Hi Willow, thanks for yout help!
We are looking for a nice place to live, not violent and dangerous.. its ok to be mixed and also ok if it doesn't have this village feel you say, because its like where we are living now, and its ok for us both.

Hi. I’d agree that while Hazel Grove is okaaay, it’s not the nicest place to live. I’ve sent you a PM

Sunshineonacloudyday20 · 22/06/2020 16:40

What's your budget? There are nicer places to live and its very close to the airport, so flights overhead etc

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 22/06/2020 16:42

It's an absolute shithole! Used to live near there as a kid.

Giganticshark · 22/06/2020 17:13

All of Stockport is a dump.
Bredbury and offerton are better though (from experience).
Nice parts of Marple.
I think it's just the grim A6 road. It's always rammed. Ergh.
And it leads to Levenshulme which, despite what anyone says who lives there, is an absolute fucking ruin of a place to live.

Mrstraveller · 22/06/2020 18:08

I grew up in Hazel Grove and have also lived in Levenshulme. Lucky me! There are some nice enough houses in HG but as others have said it doesn’t really have a centre. Just a line of shops on the A6. I left as soon as I could at 18. My experience of Levenshulme was a mercifully brief period of 6 months. Think Marple and Romiley are nicer but last time I was in Romiley it was rammed with traffic too.

Lynda07 · 22/06/2020 19:21

Oh thanks, op. I see lots of others know it so hope you are now well informed. I know nothing about Stockport. Just in case you haven't had this (I've not read all the posts yet), here is some info including crime rates:

I hear it's the new Chorlton these days
Chosennone · 22/06/2020 20:38

There are nicer places not that far from there. Marple/Romiley/Poynton/Disley. Depends on your budget and what you want?
It is too Urban for me and essentially a very busy main road.

Moltenpink · 22/06/2020 20:42

It’s not the best. Heald Green and Cheadle Hulme are much nicer.

Unescorted · 22/06/2020 21:00

Stockport in general has had a lot of investment with the new Stockport West Masterplan launched last year. An over heated central Manchester housing market means that people are moving further out - Stockport central is 10 minutes by train, with 12 trains an hour making it attractive for those people who can't afford to live in Central Manchester. It doesn't have the cache of Chorlton or the Heatons.

Hazel Grove on the other hand is less well connected - 3 trains an hour, the A6 is bumper to bumper in rush hour, cycling is life threatening and no promise of a tram. If you work at Stepping Hill it could be attractive.

Another alternative is New Mills - further out, similar rental / house prices, same travel costs is using a season ticket & has 2 stations so you 6 trains an hour. Much more rural feel. Secondary school is not great and you are limited for supermarkets. Good small independents.

EL8888 · 22/06/2020 21:18

@Giganticshark l thought Levenshulme was up and coming?! On no, in reality people have been dating that for 20 years and it’s not true

EL8888 · 22/06/2020 21:19

@Unescorted New Mills is lovely but the weather in the winter is cold. A good chance of being snowed in

Unescorted · 22/06/2020 21:26

I have only been snowed in a couple of times & I live further out. I have never had a train not run due to snow.... heat, points failure and broken down trains happen more often. Which is why the 2 train lines is such a fantastic thing.

GoBackToPartyCity · 22/06/2020 21:30

My grandma lives off commercial road 😂. It’s not the nicest to be honest. The A6 is super busy and it’s just a bit...erm...scruffy around there. Have a look at Marple, Marple Bridge and even Romiley. Much nicer!

thisstooshallpass · 22/06/2020 22:02

It's not a 'shit hole' neither is the whole of Stockport that a PP suggests. Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall come under SK postcode...

I have just sold in Cheadle Hulme. It's affluent, Bramhall more so.

Poynton isn't far from Hazel Grove, neither is Marple. Both lovely places to be. You've also got Davenport and Cale Green which are on the outskirts of Hazel Grove and IMHO nicer.

thisstooshallpass · 22/06/2020 22:05

...and Woodsmoor too.

bravotango · 23/06/2020 09:16

All of Stockport is a dump. Bredbury and offerton are better though (from experience). God, what experience is that?

And it leads to Levenshulme which, despite what anyone says who lives there, is an absolute fucking ruin of a place to live. Levenshulme is great, and I don't live there.

Marple, Romiley - both very nice!

thisstooshallpass · 23/06/2020 09:19

@EL8888 Levenshulme WAS affluent in the 20th century, you only have to look at the large opposing terraces as an indication. Many are student flats now though. Like many immediate suburbs of major cities it has suffered from inner city decline. I like its charm though, it's a cultural hive and Levy market is brilliant. Likewise I love how gritty and buzzing Moss Side is.

thisstooshallpass · 23/06/2020 09:23

@CloudsCanLookLikeSheep I challenge anybody to explore the old part of Stockport town centre and not be charmed by it.

EL8888 · 23/06/2020 10:07

@thisstooshallpass it may well have been but it hasn’t for quite a while. My mum was born in 1950 and doesn’t ever remember it being affluent. Oh yeah l see the appeal of Moss Side, some friends of mine live there and really like it

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 23/06/2020 10:42

I never said all of Stockport was bad, just HG... I live the other side of Stockport and it's quite nice!
