I made the decision erect a stud wall and house a walk in pantry, which will also house my free standing (didn't want an integrated one) washing machine - call it a walk-in pantry/utility area (*area because it's not large enough to be considered a room!).

See plan below. I was limited on options for the awkward alcove in my kitchen and this seemed the best bet. Now to design it. Hoping to go for a more bespoke feel, per the pictures I've included. I did consider placing an actual butler's pantry type larder unit in the space but it would have been too tight.

The pantry will include most of my smaller kitchen appliances (microwave, kettle, toaster, blender etc).

Please include your pics for inspo.

Here's an idea of the kitchen design - kitchen currently on order with DIY. The DIY planner doesn't allow you to include another wall, so I've included a washing machine in the alcove (*not sure alcove is the correct word) for effect. Also worth noting that in my small 1 bed flat, I have a kitchen/living room rather than a separate kitchen.

Is there a chance you could put washing machine elsewhere?
eg bathroom, laundry cupboard upstairs?

And why put all your very regular use stuff there eg kettle?
My toaster is in my pantry as its only used in morning but not sure I'd put kettle in there

@areallthenamesusedup

Is there a chance you could put washing machine elsewhere? eg bathroom, laundry cupboard upstairs?

Unfortunately not... It's a very small 1 bed flat. Initially I had planned on placing it under the boiler in the first tall larder to the right... However, I didn't think it would be safe there with all the boiler pipes running down the walls, and also I really didn't want an integrated washing machine. They're expensive for one, and just not as good as free-standing ones.

And why put all your very regular use stuff there eg kettle? My toaster is in my pantry as its only used in morning but not sure I'd put kettle in there

Honestly? I'm just a minimalist by my very nature, and don't want anything on the worktops. My coffee machine will be the only exception as I'm a coffee drinker rather than tea. The kettle will be used for guests and when I need boiling water for food.

Oh I get it now. And I am the same as you re stuff on work tops. I love being able to pop everything away out of sight. Sounds like a great plan. Good luck with your project,

Dilbertian · 20/06/2020 08:00

I love the corner arrangement in the first photo. I want something like that.

What are you doing about the door to the alcove? I want to have shallow door-mounted storage for small things.

Don't have a kettle, get a quooker.

wowfudge · 20/06/2020 08:46

A pantry should be dry and cool for food storage. Putting a washing machine in there isn't a good idea imo.

Smallgoon · 20/06/2020 09:21

@Dilbertian love that picture! To save on space, I'm getting a pocket door, hence the creation of a stud wall. There is little space so can't really have a door that opens out.

Re a Qooker Tao - just seems a big expense for something I don't really need. I'm guessing it takes up space under the sink too?

Wow fudge - The kitchen designer didn't think it would be an issue. The idea was to always house one of the larger appliances in there. We were toying with putting a single freezer in there but then decided on washing machine.

I agree with PP about not putting anything that will create moisture or heat jn there. I’d think again if I were you.

I had a walk pantry on our last house and the best bit about it was it was cold and dry so for food storage it was ideal. Does it have an outside window? How will you ventilate what is a small room against steam and moisture?

wowfudge · 20/06/2020 09:39

Well I wouldn't do it. What about splitting the space you are thinking of separating from the main room and having part with the washing machine and storage of washing powder and cleaning materials above, ironing board, etc and the rest as a pantry with shelving?

Daisydoesnt · 20/06/2020 09:55

Fab idea from wowfudge!!!

Mosaic123 · 20/06/2020 10:13

Will it be a washer /dryer? Takes up the same space as a washing machine and it sounds as if you don't have loads of space for drying. You could have a rail in the new utility space but you would need to be sure that the pocket door had a small air opening (grille?) and that pantry food items were tightly shut so as not to get damp.

Dilbertian · 20/06/2020 10:29

I honestly don't think this is the best use of that space. You're going to have less than 1m to crouch in front of the machine while loading and unloading it. There won't be space for shelves on the wall behind you.

Would be better, I think, to turn the whole alcove into storage. You can still have a non-integrated washing machine installed in the kitchen area, hidden behind a unit door.

NOTANUM · 20/06/2020 10:31

In a 1 bedroom flat I wouldn't do it. A 3 bedroom house aimed at families where the washing machine is on all the time? Definitely!!

NOTANUM · 20/06/2020 10:32

I would just put a large bespoke cupboard in there.

Daisydoesnt · 20/06/2020 10:33

Oh god OP I’m such an idiot. I thought the plan was for the whole pantry, not the kitchen. Sorry

MrsCollinssettled · 20/06/2020 12:44

Definitely don't put a washing machine in a pantry. Might be better to put all your washing and cleaning stuff in there if there is nowhere else to put them and have a pull out larder cupboard in the main bit of the kitchen

Smallgoon · 20/06/2020 13:08

Thanks for all the comments, it's giving me food for thought. The issue with having the washing machine in the actual kitchen, is that I compromise on pan drawers which I don't want to do. I also just don't know where to put it. As I said, it was supposed to be housed under boiler, but there are pipes running down both sides of the wall, and it was flagged as a safety issue - particular when it goes into spin cycle.

It's a washing machine, not a dryer. I'm not going to use to the pantry space to dry clothes- my flat has floor to ceiling windows and is quite warm, so clothes can easily dry on a clothes horse in the living room.

@Wowfudge wasn't sure what you mean with your suggestion of separating it out?

I've included a couple of mock up pics to show it in a basic form.

Keep the pans in the pantry.

wowfudge · 20/06/2020 14:03

Right - I have now seen the picture with the pocket door. I would put the washing machine behind a door and I don't mean integrating it, just separating it, and have a utility cupboard in the space. I wouldn't have the washing machine in the same space as food.

areallthenamesusedup · 20/06/2020 16:15

If you are having pantry doors with shelves, get specialist hinges....they have to take a lot of weight.

Smallgoon · 20/06/2020 22:10

So nobody has a pictures to share...? Sad

Just to add that a blogger I follow (Kate La Vie) has something similar as part of her kitchen renovation - she on the other hand has her washing machine and a freezer behind folding doors, and the space doubles up as a pantry. I think it looks great.

The food will primarily be dry goods/tinned etc. So I don't feel particularly grossed out by the idea of sharing the space with appliances.

I'll bite! Apologies for the Saturday night mess Blush left hand wall is food shelves with pans hanging below. Work tops on the other two walls with coffee machine, sous vide, toaster and fly zapper. Dishwasher, recycling bins, veg rack and bins underneath.
