I made the decision erect a stud wall and house a walk in pantry, which will also house my free standing (didn't want an integrated one) washing machine - call it a walk-in pantry/utility area (*area because it's not large enough to be considered a room!).

See plan below. I was limited on options for the awkward alcove in my kitchen and this seemed the best bet. Now to design it. Hoping to go for a more bespoke feel, per the pictures I've included. I did consider placing an actual butler's pantry type larder unit in the space but it would have been too tight.

The pantry will include most of my smaller kitchen appliances (microwave, kettle, toaster, blender etc).

Please include your pics for inspo.

@Sarahlou63 Smile

Looks great! You're clearly a fan of having appliances tucked away too rather than on kitchen worktops.

Above this thread is one about what percentage adult you are (on my feed). So first I discussed that with DH (I've decided that I'm about 60%) and then I saw this thread and immediately was sick with envy and announced my desire for a walk in pantry

Apparently that's made me 100% adult.

Also, I am so jealous of all of you 😔

OP - your plan looks great and I completely support removing all the appliances. I hate clutter

I had a walk in pantry and put my washing machine in there. It worked really well for us.
We didn't have a door on the pantry so it was open to the kitchen but that gave us the best use of the space and some ventilation I guess.
Didn't notice any issues with excess moisture and the food we stored in there.

BindTheWobbinUp · 20/06/2020 22:36

We also had a microwave tucked in there for occasional use.

WaffleCash · 20/06/2020 22:48

Our washing machine is in the pantry, it doesn't cause any issues. We are going to move it, because we have space elsewhere and want more space in the pantry and it's slightly awkward to access.

The microwave, which is also in the pantry, feels like it gives off way more heat and moisture than the washing machine does

How does drying washing on a clothes horse in the living room sit with being minimalist? Totally missing the point of the thread.

I would love a pantry though I expect it would become my larger version of the man drawer.

Smallgoon · 20/06/2020 23:36

@zaffa Awww, I guess I'm 100% adult now too then.

Your time will come I'm sure, and I hope you manage to get the walk-in pantry of your dreams! Smile

@BindTheWobbinUp @WaffleCash Good to know I'm not the only weirdo with a washing machine in the pantry Wink

@Quietheart I should have perhaps been clearer. I've always lived in rentals that have had very cluttered kitchens, with utensils/pots/pans being visible rather than housed somewhere. My personal preference is to have a very clean looking, clutter-free kitchen.

RE: the clothes horse; I can wash clothes in the evening, and they'll be dry by the morning. New builds notoriously retain heat. So I won't be dodging a clothes horse during the day Smile

I read that as worn in panties 😱. Really need an eye test ASAP!

womanaf · 01/07/2020 21:58

If you hate clutter, put your (heated) clothes horse In there too and call it a utility room. Kettle and tins etc on shelves above/pocket doors. I’ve just done similar and love having the laundry out of sight.

On Pinterest look for ‘laundry room in closet’.

Smallgoon · 01/07/2020 23:20

@womanaf I had no idea a 'heated clothes horse' was a thing... Shock

Our pantry is basically the old staircase of the house before it was extended. So several shelves are actually stairs (dating back to 1850s ) We love it.... (Currently very over full and looks a mess hence no photos) Grin

Lakeland. They’re brilliant. Way better than a tumble drier.

Smallgoon · 02/07/2020 09:38

@Youmeanyouvelostyourkey I love the under stair pantries I've seen on pinterest... Such a good use of space!

@womanaf Thanks for the tip, will check out!

We had a small walk in pantry in our old house (attached). We loved it so much we are having one built in our new house. If you have it built rather than buying kitchen furniture it works out a lot cheaper.

I would avoid putting either a washing machine or dryer in it as you want it cool and dry and ideally on an external wall.

Here is my tiny pantry, it houses the washing machine and our fridge freezer, plus a spare dishwasher that we don’t use as the kitchen has one built in. We do have a a small built in under counter fridge in the kitchen near the kettle, it’s only used for drinks.
As you can see the pantry also contains a load of crap that is hidden when the door is shut! There is an opening window behind the fridge. I’d have no issues storing tinned and non perishable food in there.
Next to the washing machine is a slimline bin and on the floor beside the fridge are my recycling bags.
It’s small but I love it!

Excellent! What are pantries for if you can't shove some of the your crap there to keep kitchen clear!
