How much did you pay for your bathroom renovation?

Just moved into our first house and it's a fucking money pit! We just had a massive leak under the bath where the pipes just gave out after 15 years of leaking. We've put a claim in on the house insurance but not sure if they will pay out. Basically the bath has been tiled at an angle despite the wall being straight so water from the shower is going down the back of the tiles (?) and it was going through the taps but we had those changed, we've also had the crack in the bath kind of repaired with silicone but it won't last. Here's a photo of our bathroom
Just because.

We need;
New bath
New tiles
New floor boards
New floor

Am I missing something? That is a photo of a perfectly normal bathroom.

Smallgoon · 15/06/2020 19:08

OP, what part of the country are you based in?

Thisismytimetoshine · 15/06/2020 19:09

Will they really pay out for an entire bathroom refit because you had a leaky pipe?! I doubt it.
Ours cost £16.5k, btw.

OrchidFlakes · 15/06/2020 19:15

Brand new bathroom last year, new floor, tiles new suite, relocated the loo including external pipe works. Just over 4K. South East

Samiad85 · 15/06/2020 19:23

In October last year we spent 6k odd. My husband is a plasterer so we didn’t have to pay for that. We are west mids.
We’ve lived here 5 years and we are still spending and it’s still not where I’d like it to be. Sick of it!

ItsLeviooosar · 15/06/2020 19:30

The bathroom needs to be replaced because the floor boards are rotten because of the leak, the tiles need to come off because they're badly done and letting water underneath the bath, the floor needs to come up because it's mouldy, the bath needs to come out because it's cracked.. so yes we do need a new bathroom

Bathroom suite, mixer shower tiles, paint and blind including fitting cost us just under £800. Tiling and floor tiles were done by my other half.

dontmesswiththeGC · 15/06/2020 19:34

We completely gutted ours so everything including labour was about £12.5k. Budget started at £7k but after getting 4 quotes I quickly realised the labour itself would be £6k (ish)

LadyMacnet · 15/06/2020 19:35

4K, 4 years ago in SE. Also included new soil pipe. All new suite but only shower over bath, which kept the cost down. We also did a separate shower room for a similar cost at the same time.

Smallgoon · 15/06/2020 19:43

Mine cost circa 12k but I feel I was overcharged on mine. What was meant to be a 2 week project ended up taking closer to 4 as the work was dragged out by greedy builder.

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 15/06/2020 19:44

Mine included a new unvented hot water system as well, I bought all the new sanitary ware & tiles separately.

• Removal of existing boiler tanks in loft/airing and any redundant pipe work
• Supply and Installation of new 250l horizontal tempest unvented hot water cylinder in loft space, with all pipe work to be adapted in old airing cupboard and run to new cylinder location
• Removal of existing bathroom suite
• New ply wood floor over existing floorboards
• All damaged wall areas in bathroom to be re plastered
• Complete new install of new bathroom suite ( all sanitary ware to be supplied by yourself)
• New towel rail to be supplied and fitted
• All tiling to be completed to floor and around bath area.
• Electrician to supply and fit x5 new spotlights in bathroom and alter wiring in airing cupboard to suit new unvented hot water system
Sub total - £5290
VAT @ 20% - £1058
TOTAL - £6348

Just been quoted £4K to redo bathroom and en-suite. New bath and toilets (sinks are staying), including replacing plasterboard behind the bath. New tiled floors and towel rail radiators.

Painting of bathroom/en-suite/kitchen ceiling extra. Ceiling was needing done after we had lights moved anyway.

Glasgow if that makes any difference. Friend of a friend but we think he's charging full whack which we expected, got him doing it cos we've seen his work and it's superb.

Pipandmum · 15/06/2020 19:52

I would think it should cost £3-5k depending on your flooring situation - whether you need to replace part of the structure. A new suite could cost a few hundred to several thousand. Tiles a few hundred, and a few hundred for tiler. If you keep the same lay out plumbing a few hundred. Floor a couple hundred.
Do the stripping of tiles and removing the suite yourself.
Costs are location specific. In London I was once quoted £10,000 to redo a single shower - not including tiles (I didn't do it)! In another area I paid £5000 to put a whole new bathroom on a floor where there were no drains at all: new bathroom suite, separate shower, new floor, all tiling, lighting and plumbing included.

Susanna85 · 15/06/2020 20:06

Well it depends what sort of quality you want to go for. As a minimum for a cheap-ish bathroom suite with labour and replacement floor boards £6K. More if you choose to tile the whole room (could you get away with just replacing the faulty area?).

DaphneduM · 15/06/2020 20:36

We completely replaced a large bathroom, floor needed to be made good as it had a sunken corner bath in it. (Downstairs bathroom). Moved everything around, large separate shower, double sink and vanity unit, fully tiled. Also a saniflow loo and washbasin put in upstairs at the same time - total £11k. I would have thought you'd hopefully get away with about £5k ish for yours as it's not a large area. Definitely get a few quotes to compare.

Quornflakegirl · 15/06/2020 20:38

SW and £7k on a completely new bathroom (it's quite small).

louisthetrumpetswan · 15/06/2020 20:44

We paid about £5k last year for new bath/shower/sink/toilet, part tiling and vinyl flooring.

A new floor isn't that expensive tbh, but does depend how many if any of the joists need to be replaced.

Tiling and flooring costs the same as a second hand car - huge variations. The cost is in the labour, part-tile part paint is much cheaper.

On a positive note, the walls might be very in tact if the tiles haven't been adhered properly. That happened to us - the tiles just popped off...

louisthetrumpetswan · 15/06/2020 20:45

Re: insurance. If there was no problem identified when you moved in, then they probably will pay up.

My0My · 15/06/2020 21:00

Can I add to your woes by saying do tank under the bath/shower. Any leaks won’t go down to the floor below. I think yours is quite a big job but you don’t need to spend a fortune on sanitary ware. However you do need to make it sound and watertight and it won’t be cheap if you want a good job.

HalleLouja · 15/06/2020 21:08

I think we paid about £2.5k for fitting each bathroom and about the same for the sanitary wear and tiles them but I shopped around. Got the best price for fitting. We got tiles from Walls and Floor bundle and my husband spent a long time trawling the web for the rest. I love my bathrooms.

ItsLeviooosar · 15/06/2020 21:33

Thanks!

Can you put a shower from
The bath taps onto a free standing bath ?

We spent £15k including fitting on a top spec luxury bathroom. But that includes moving everything around.
