Its a flat hallway so no stairs. We just have a coat and shoe rack in there and the modem. It has six wooden doors going off it so they will need painting too. Its rented so dont want to spend too much. Any idea on paint colours F&B do one called Borrowed light but the decorator last time complained bitterly about F&B! Any ideas of what to do with a small magnolia hallway with picture rails?

We went for white. Works well.

EachandEveryone · 27/05/2020 15:33

Any kind of white?

the thing about using white in a room that gets little light is that is looks greyish. If its a very small area I would go for a rich colour and improve lighting in there- lamps etc. You can maybe have off white on top half and a darker shade halfway down like you would if you had a dado rail

We used Dulux' Light and Space in my daughter's bedroom (First Frost but there are 15-20 colours I think)- mainly because she liked the colour and I thought the light and space claim (making a room look bright and spacious) was pie in the sky, but honestly, its beautiful and really does seem to brighten the room. We have a lot of white in there too (furniture, woodwork, ceiling etc) but very impressed.

Its very narrow. I cant wait for the charity shops to open i need to get rid of lots of coats. Its 1920’s I will be paying for it on a budget they quoted me £250 to paint it.

Just discovered this website. Couple of Dulux Trade shades are very similar to Borrowed Light.

Binterested · 27/05/2020 16:07

I was just coming on to say not Borrowed Light ! I actually have Borrowed Light in my small hallway with little natural light and it looks rubbish. Sort of cold and grey and dingy. Also F & B is not hardwearing I find. I’d be more inclined to go for a rich, intense colour like a deep yellow or even a shocking pink which worked brilliantly in a similar space I had once.

EachandEveryone · 27/05/2020 16:13

Im more worried about the landlord making me paint it back when I leave thpugh. Im not planning on leaving for afew years but you never know. Right I will scrap Borrowed Light thanks for the heads up.

White or dove grey

ramarama · 27/05/2020 17:15

Light grey - maybe look at something similar to F&B Lamp Room Grey (don't need to use the actual brand, just get it matched)
I read years ago that in Britain we often make the mistake of painting dark spaces white to feel bigger, but with no natural light it just doesn't work. Much better to embrace a bit of colour and make it look deliberate. I would also avoid white with that many doors/traffic as it can look grubby.
Grey to the picture rail, then white. Probably white doors

ramarama · 27/05/2020 17:19

Plus its an inoffensive colour so likely the landlord won't make you change it back when you leave.

I think F&B James White works well in a hallway. We used a crown colour match

EachandEveryone · 27/05/2020 17:39

Any furnising hints behind from where i took the photo i have the modem and phone and cabinet whos door is falling off and also is it worth putting a mirror somewhere?

How about rock salt by dulux it’s a very pale grey it’s really brightened up our living room.

roses2 · 27/05/2020 18:27

We've got Dulux wipe clean brilliant white. Definitely invest in wipe clean paint as the hallway gets dirty.

EachandEveryone · 28/05/2020 14:07

I dont think i will do it all white. I just dont know really.

There’s a school of thought (the Farrow & Ball book) that a darker colour in the hall makes the rooms off it look brighter and bigger. Worth considering?

WhenItIsOver · 28/05/2020 17:32

I was expecting everyone to suggest Timeless which is what usually comes up on these threads.

I have tried numerous testers in my dark hallway and still not found one, I do not want Timeless, and we liked Jade White if that is any help.

I would avoid any kind of grey as it tends to be gloomy, either the blue tone or the yellow. Dark seems to show up imperfections. In the ended I painted over all the tester patches with magnolia to match what is already there but am currently looking at getting the Jade White.

EachandEveryone · 28/05/2020 17:43

Where is jade White from?

EachandEveryone · 28/05/2020 17:44

Ah, its discontinued in Wilkos

Dark, bright Yellow would be gorgeous, with nice crisp white woodwork, a re-painted white ceiling and maybe some gold frames? Maybe F&B Dutch Orange or Babouche. I think it could carry a v bright colour—could put a lovely lampshade against this, as well as maybe a pale rug?

Or you could go the other direction and paint a lovely pale neutral green or blue—like a country cottage look, something like Breakfast Room Green?

Lots of options with picture rail: (a) picture rail same colour as wall, all wall same colour (b) picture rail white, area above same colour as wall below or (c) picture rail white and wall above white.

If I was painting myself, I would probably do white picture rail and white wall above, white ceiling, and dark but bright yellow walls. If you put some gold against the yellow (picture frames, mirrors to bounce light around) it would look great. A long mirror maybe on the back of the door?

EachandEveryone · 29/05/2020 21:37

Oh Ive never thought about putting a mirror on the door because of the glass at the top.

Have you got any links to any colours.

Ive got Calke green in the living room so dont want another green really.

This might give you a better idea. It’s a funny shape as there’s a door in the middle!
