colour advice for whole house carpeting colour

I am about to put an elderly relations 3 bedroom house in London on the market as she has moved to a care home. The proceeds will be paying for her longterm care so I want to do a good job. She has not been able to keep it up to date for years , so it is badly in need of a refresh. The local agents have recommended simply removing the contents, painting, and replacing the carpet throughout. I will probably choose a cream colour, like F & Bs tallow, for the walls and I would like to keep the carpet in a continuous colour also, but I could really use some Mumsnet advice, as I have no experience with carpeting. Thank you.

Probably silver/grey with white walls or light brown with magnolia type walls.

fannymae36 · 24/05/2020 18:33

Thank you Issey that`s the type of heathery finish I was thinking would not need vacuuming every 5 minutes, even with 4 cats! Yours looks like the mid grey....

OP why F&B paint? I love the finish and have used it in several rooms in my home, but it's expensive if you're painting throughout just to sell.

foodtoorder · 24/05/2020 20:07

At the moment I'd go for a silver/grey for an trend look.

Glittercandle · 24/05/2020 20:09

Grey carpet and grey walls.

isseywith4vampirecats · 24/05/2020 20:12

I also wouldn't bother with expensive F&B paint pick a standard white or magnolia and do all the walls the same as people moving in want to put their own stamp on decorating and pale plain painted walls are a blank canvas and makes the house look clean

Babamamananarama · 24/05/2020 20:13

Not grey. Not heather. Grey always looks cold.

I'd go for a light sandy beige.

Northernsoullover · 24/05/2020 20:15

Buy some Armstead paint (excellent trade paint) in white and leave it at that. I wouldn't do grey. I know it seems like everyone loves it but just leave it a completely blank canvas.

Flamingolingo · 24/05/2020 20:18

Do you really need to bother though? If she’s had the house a long time it’s likely that the services etc will need updating and so the carpet will get ripped up and the walls painted anyway. Can’t you just sell as a doer upper?

isseywith4vampirecats · 24/05/2020 20:39

flamingo I can see why op is trying to get maximum price for the house my mother in law went into care in Essex and costs were £170000 over the two years she lived in care

KittenVsBox · 24/05/2020 20:39

Dont bother with farrow and ball paint prices.
Go for something like Leyland magnolia. Fraction of the price, and decent paint.

randomsabreuse · 24/05/2020 21:10

Get something with a twist not a solid colour - shows fewer marks and less dust! Good quality underlay is worth it, you can really feel the difference. Cream would scare me off (2 children) and I'd assume and budget a need to change it fairly soon however new it was...

White ceilings, white or natural woodwork and something pale on the walls, either white or very very pale white, yellow or another colour that suits the house.

If there's some basic furniture (especially double beds) that can give a sense of size to the bedrooms that really helps pictures as in person viewing is more limited at the moment. Likewise a plain table in the dining area, especially if a decent size can emphasise space.

We're looking at the moment (not London) and it's really hard to judge sizes of empty rooms (and even how many rooms you're being shown!) in an unfurnished house with identical carpets/walls!

onlinelinda · 24/05/2020 21:29

You can buy Johnstone's or other cheaper paint in F and B colours, if you like them. For the love of god, don't buy grey carpet. These days many people are over it and lots of people didn't like it on the first place.

FinallyHere · 24/05/2020 21:32

Sorry, not decide related. We thought long and hard and decided to rent our my mother's house. Four bedrooms, rent just under half the nursing home fees per month.

OneEpisode · 24/05/2020 21:32

Trade paint. griege carpet. An indication of furnishings, chosen from the ones she has, or a cardboard box with a cloth over.

OneEpisode · 24/05/2020 21:34

And I think people are suspicious that an old person has died in the house, and some are superstitious, so a nice cheerful picture or relative with family, and making sure the house smells fresh.

byvirtue · 24/05/2020 21:35

Not grey! And Definitely not one of those horrid carpets where the pile moves so much that it shows where it’s been hoovered.

I would go with a cool oatmeal, it will lighten and brighten the room and you can paint the walls pretty much any colour with an oatmeal shade.

Bert2020 · 24/05/2020 21:36

Contact local agents, my Nan’s home was sold on to a council (not the local one) and they got £20-£30k below market rate and we had pulled up all carpets, kitchen was a sink and in poor state. Essentially as pp’s said you may be able to save your money.

Mamia15 · 24/05/2020 21:36

FFS don't use F&B paints.

White is fine - and ask your estate agents what colour carpet is likely to appeal to their target market - it would be either grey, pale caramel or griege.

OneEpisode · 24/05/2020 21:38

There needs to be a bathroom and a kitchen for anyone buying with a standard mortgage. But otherwise there are all sorts of buyers!

SpeedofaSloth · 24/05/2020 21:39

Oatmeal/ biscuit colour carpets are surprisingly forgiving of stains/ spills and warmer than white or grey.

maddy68 · 24/05/2020 21:40

I'd go grey

Nanalisa60 · 24/05/2020 21:44

I would just empty house, and Take down all old fashioned window hangings and lift all the old carpets. And just leave the floor boards!!

Who every buys the house is probably going to gut it. They want to see the bones of the house.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 24/05/2020 21:47

Yes to a PP suggesting a dappled colour, the only solid colour carpet in our house always looks like it needs a Hoover but our others are fine!
