Sink or hob on island

Sorry if this has been asked before but I’m wondering what people would choose if they had to have either the sink or the hob on the kitchen island and any reason why.

Just planning a new kitchen and we could have both on the worktops but we’re hoping to squeeze in a utility room which would reduce the length of worktop and therefore relocating either the sink or hob would just allow for a less cluttered worktop.

We wash up quite a lot so I’m thinking it maybe quite messy having a sink and everything draining on the island. We also have young kids so I’m worried about the hob from a health and safety perspective if they are sitting at the island.

There's you answer, if you want to sit there too it can't be the hob. ( too dangerous )

areallthenamesusedup · 29/04/2020 14:33

Think it'll look messy to have washing up in the middle of room, IMO.
I've had a hob in middle and it was fine safety wise. But you need to get your head around ventilation. Building Regs say usually you need an extractor fan (there are exceptions). You need to think where you will put extractor and how it is vented. Its worth you getting a grip on the regs on all this as in my experience even kitchen designers do not always understand the regs properly.

Hob

But only if you can put the seating far enough away. We have the hob towards one end of the island and the seating around the other end.

areallthenamesusedup · 29/04/2020 14:47

And induction hob safest option.

Mummyshark2018 · 29/04/2020 15:09

We have an induction hob in the island and it's perfect. We also have an extractor fab hidden into the island which rises when in use.

Africa2go · 29/04/2020 16:02

Its down to personal preference.

We have the sink on the island for a couple of reasons. The pop up extractor fans that you have on an island are v expensive and / or useless and to have one above the island would have completely ruined the sight lines to the garden etc. A wall mounted extractor on an outside wall was much better. Also had 3 young children who sit at the island for homework etc so didn't want them near a hob, splashes etc.

We also don't have masses of washing up - most things go in the dishwasher and otherwise its washed as we go along. Its washed and put away so never looks cluttered, we don't have washing up standing on the island or draining.

I saw a mobile kitchen island on a TV programme once - on casters that could be locked in place but it meant that the unit could be moved around. Obviously not with a sink or a hob in it though...
I wish I had room for one like this.

StealthMama · 29/04/2020 17:18

Neither - keep it free as your prep and social area.

Chocolatear · 29/04/2020 17:21

I have a gas hob on mine. We sit and eat there as well. No incidents so far 🔥🔥

MarieG10 · 29/04/2020 17:29

Neither if you have the choice...keep it clear and will be a great social space. If you have to have one, have an induction hob

Soontobe60 · 29/04/2020 17:38

I have an induction hob on my peninsular. We sit at the peninsular but not necessarily when cooking. We don't actually have an extractor as we have high ceilings. I was a bit worried at first but I don't miss havng one. The room doesn't get smoky or steamed up.
The advantage over a sink is that when we're sat on the sofa we can't see any mess 🤣

justanotherneighinparadise · 29/04/2020 17:42

We have an induction hob in the equivalent of a breakfast bar (with units underneath but it juts our from a right angle from the wall making the kitchen U shaped). It works really well. The kids drag a bench over and are often close to the cooking but the hob itself doesn’t stay hot as it’s induction and if we’re cooking we’re always there. So depending on the hob I think it would be okay.

I’m trying to imagine a sink on an island. I think they might look weird 🤔

NotMeNoNo · 29/04/2020 17:42

I think hob is fine, put the stools away whilst it's in use or while your kids are young. Or have the seating area at the other end to the hob? You can have a wall extractor rather than a hood if it makes it easier.

I like having a big light space to prep and cook on The washing up gets piled in a corner for loading into the dishwasher.

justanotherneighinparadise · 29/04/2020 17:45

Are you having a dishwasher too? It’s always a good idea to have the sink close to the dishwasher so that might sway my opinion.

Focalpoint · 29/04/2020 18:12

Another vote for neither

plus3 · 29/04/2020 18:29

Neither - sink under window, oven at top end of island, island completely clear. Absolutely love it

Belindabelle · 29/04/2020 18:40

I went for sink on the island. I wanted a range cooker with the extractor hidden in the chimney breast.

Sink is deep and undermounted. Don’t really see the odd pot sitting in it. 90% of dishes go in dishwasher. Never leave anything draining though I do have draining grooves.

mumdone · 29/04/2020 18:42

Such a hard decision. If I had to choose it would be induction hob. Sink would be far too messy for us.
As long as the island was big enough.
Some of my friends have jobs on theirs and love it.
There’s always a compromise! Good luck op.

Crabbo · 29/04/2020 18:42

We have an induction hob with one gas ring on our island. I really like it there, it feels really spacious when you’re cooking instead of standing in front of the wall. We don’t have any seats at the island though so the kids aren’t sitting there when we cook. They do sometimes stand in their tower at the end of the island but it’s far enough away that they couldn’t reach over and touch.

RoLaren · 29/04/2020 18:44

I thought this was a whimsical castaway dilemma!

SherlocksDeerstalker · 29/04/2020 18:49

Neither if at all possible. I’ve done three kitchens in six years, and my preference is neither. I prefer good clean lines and an open multi use space.

However, in this last kitchen there was no way to achieve that, so we went with putting the induction hob at one end, and the seating area (on two sides) at the other. Very deep undermounted sink under window.

IMHO island sinks only look good in magazines, or if you’re the sort of person who washes and tidies every scrap away instantly.

Mischance · 29/04/2020 18:51

I would not put a hob on the island with young children about.

Thighdentitycrisis · 29/04/2020 19:06

I want hob, because you can cook looking out to guests and the room and dirty dishes on the island would be gross. DP wants sink or both. Stalemate

Zarara · 29/04/2020 19:20

Thanks for the opinions. I’m leaning between leaving it clear, but will this may be at the cost of a tall cupboard unit to hide the microwave, toaster etc... otherwise it sounds like an induction hob is the way to go.

I would also say neither if possible. An island is a great space to have clear, then it can be used for multiple things. A friend has a sink on her kitchen island and absolutely hates it.
