Sink or hob on island

Sorry if this has been asked before but I’m wondering what people would choose if they had to have either the sink or the hob on the kitchen island and any reason why.

Just planning a new kitchen and we could have both on the worktops but we’re hoping to squeeze in a utility room which would reduce the length of worktop and therefore relocating either the sink or hob would just allow for a less cluttered worktop.

We wash up quite a lot so I’m thinking it maybe quite messy having a sink and everything draining on the island. We also have young kids so I’m worried about the hob from a health and safety perspective if they are sitting at the island.

Sink definitely. We mostly use our dishwasher. If there’s washing up, it’s usually plastic kid stuff or 1 or 2 pots that get washed quickly and put away

OP if your choice is either the sink or hob on the island, plus a tall cupboard for the microwave / toaster etc, definitely DON'T sacrifice your tall cupboard just so you can leave your island clear. Having a lovely clutter-free island won't matter if you have all that other small equipment out on the worktop behind it.

An island is a social space....unless you like having people gather round to watch you scrub a pan, I’d definitely vote for a hob. As others have said, do not ignore extraction.

SINK!

It works really well. My friend has one on her island unit and it's brilliant. Dishwasher also in the unit, drawers with recycling bins, drawers for plates blah blah cocktails. I love it. Will deffo have one in my next kitchen.

Hob. We’ve got an induction Hob, with a downdraft extractor (got the cheap one from amazon rather than the £££ one - works fine) much neater than a sink, although we do often have dishes waiting round the sink

We didn’t consider messy dishes would be an issue but it definitely would have been

Hob.

Unless you have the discipline to wasup everything immediately and enjoying cooking with you back to everyone.

Definitely an induction hob but make sure the island is big enough to have space either side of the job for when you are moving hot pans around.

Neither. I love a nice open expanse of space. Hobs are a hazard unless the island is very large and spacious - not necessarily in so much as people get burnt by fire, but things sputter out of pots and pans resulting in oil or tomato stains on clothes. Having the sink just adds to the clutter in the middle of the kitchen and I felt compelled to keep on top of the washing and drying up. If you have the dishwasher under there too, it’s just noisy, even the quiet ones. I’ve seen a microwave tucked away under an island before and that worked quite well. It was only an occasional use microwave though - not frequently used as a main oven.

We have an induction hob, like people say you need to check building regs for an extractor but you can get flush to ceiling ones, they're £££ but worth the money.
