My vote goes for old.

Got to be OLD. Grew up and have always lived in Victorian/Edwardian houses, until I moved to Cheltenham - and unfortunatley couldn't afford to live in one of the splendid Regency piles, I live in a miserable shoebox new-build. And the fact that it is warm and clean and the windows don't rattle doesn't make up for the nasty, soulless lack of character. The walls are made of PAPER I swear.

I visited a friend who lives in a period house the other weekend, and was very jealous of her stained-glass windows, wooden floorboards and high ceilings.

Can't wait to move.

I bought a relatively new house (12 years old), with a fab floor plan on a conveniently located, quiet street. It had no character, but had everything else going for it. Spent some money adding in the character/charm (new bathrooms/kitchen, beautiful mantels from architectural salvage, different light fixtures, changed the front door, etc), and couldn't be happier.
