My vote goes for old.

ledodgy · 15/09/2007 20:57

My late victorian terrace has a utility room.

Rytzy · 15/09/2007 20:58

I would rather live in a new home.... well buildt to European Standards not the poky ones Barrat Homes style. Perhaps and OCTAGON development would be good!

BeetrootBevan · 15/09/2007 20:58

have a fantasy about a brand new house - but would have to build it myslef.

alawys lived in old houses (with utility)

but love the idea of straight walls and floors

TheMadHouse · 15/09/2007 20:59

I have lived in both and am currently living in a new house. we are planning to build our own over the nect few years and have bought our plot of land.

It will be green and our forever home and perfect

funnypeculiar · 15/09/2007 20:59

Old.
But if they built more modern houses that were genuinely modern (rather than copy-cat mini versions of victorian houses), I'd feel rather differently.
I mean, I know they do, but not for my sort of money.

southeatsastras · 15/09/2007 21:00

i used to spend hours designing my own house when i was little. i'm so jealous of the people that can do that now on grand designs.

maisym · 15/09/2007 21:01

old house - lots of history & character, lovely build, thick walls, orginal features. Downside is high ceilings & large rooms make it colder in the winter - We have a selection of wraps and blankets for vistors!! I now understand why people wore nightcaps to bed as opposed to drinking them!!

Rytzy · 15/09/2007 21:01

yeah yeah! New and modern! I hate the fake victoriana, edwardiana, puaj!

And I could def do new barn conversion or similar. Or fab architect designed glass and steel affair.

ChippyMinton · 15/09/2007 21:02

Have done both. The new one was fine, brand new to me, it even had an open fire.
Have Edwardian now and much prefer it, even though the fireplaces have disappeared along with the chimneys at some point in its history.

Tutter · 15/09/2007 21:02

have lived in both

grew up in a house built in mid 18th century

and have lived ina few new builds, inc a vbery high spec one (marble bathroom, underfloor heating, intelligent lighting etc)

now looking for bothj - an old property but with fabulous kitchen, bathroom etc

LyraBelacqua · 15/09/2007 21:02

Old and characterful, definitely. I grew up in a new 'box' with paper-thin walls, and don't ever want to go back to that.

Rytzy · 15/09/2007 21:03

don't care about the history, old houses are very expensive to keep on tip top condition!

Draughts, bad piping, cracks, crappy drains,
noisy floors, i could be here all night!

satine · 15/09/2007 21:04

Most new builds these days are just like DFS sofas.

professorplum · 15/09/2007 21:04

I hated new houses until I got one.

Its warm
No eccentric wiring
windows open and close properly
You don't have to choose wallpaper based on what will cover dodgy plastering best

It is built with rubbish materials but it does the job.

It doesn't have much character but I have enough of my own

Ideally I would like a big old detached house that I could lovingly restore with my fortune

or

A big newbuild that I designed myself (will also need fortune)

Ellbell · 15/09/2007 21:04

Here's my old building Nearly fell off my chair when I saw how much flats there cost these days. Blimey! Funky, though, isn't it?

Have to agree, though, that Edwardian houses are the best!

whomovedmychocolate · 15/09/2007 21:05

Don't forget the various animals you get in old houses. We have had the lot (including ATM a ficking screech owl!)

Rytzy · 15/09/2007 21:05

I so agree. Iwould like a modern 21st century style house- underfloor heating, well insulated, solar panels!

Oh well, when i make my first million!

Othersideofthechannel · 15/09/2007 21:06

old, with character

but ended up buying one that was 9 yrs old and love it

jajas, it probably is the house - I have a friend who couldn't come into our old house w/out getting an asthma attack. Our new home is v. modern inside and we've used a lot of wood and slate throughout so has a natural vibe to it. I remember how much dust used to collect on the beams of our old house, it really was little wonder the dds got so ill. Bonus of modern house: much less dusting

Lullabyloo · 15/09/2007 21:07

definately old.....I put up with draughty sash windows & wonky floorboards......I just cant do new

Rytzy · 15/09/2007 21:09

bye girls!
