Hi, I’m looking for a smooth painted shaker kitchen. I really like TH but it’s not in our budget. Can anyone recommend shaker kitchen? Thanks

DIY Kitchens, Stanbury painted.

skippy67 · 13/04/2020 14:47

I'm going for the Diy kitchens Stanbury (if I ever work out how to use their online planner...)Confused

mumdone · 13/04/2020 15:02

Oh thanks. Can you get dove tail draws?

Have a look at their website. Loads of info on there about the different shaker kitchen options.

mumdone · 13/04/2020 16:26

I did. I just can’t see what draw options they have :/

Oh ok. Drop them an email then? They're very helpful.

Loofah01 · 13/04/2020 16:33

Not sure about dove tail joints but you can order samples for colour etc. Once you get used to it the planner is pretty decent and the end panels etc get added / removed automatically as you build everything up. Just hit a button at the end and a proper person checks it all over and transfers it to a basket to buy. I was impressed.

mumdone · 13/04/2020 16:39

Fab. Thanks will email them

If dovetail drawers are your must have, you can order them from here (Probox) and have your fitter change them. We did this, they are lovely drawers.
here

Try John Lewis of Hungerford. Our shaker kitchen from there is beautiful and much less than the Tom Howley price.

Puffalicious · 13/04/2020 19:40

Drawers! Not bloody draws! Where has this come from- it's everywhere!

AGreatUsername · 15/04/2020 16:42

Whereabouts are you? My family run a kitchen company is South Wales, we are usually asked to style along the TH/Devol lines and have an excellent reputation. If you’re nowhere near us though I’d still recommend finding an independent, the service and quality is usually much better than chains or online. Probox drawers are what we use too, so I’d also highly recommend them.

@mumdone Have you found a kitchen company you like yet? I'm based in Surrey too. Currently very new to the game but looking to find a decent Shaker kitchen company - have you had any luck?

I’ve been to see Christchurch Kitchens based in Claygate and also Tom Howley which wasn’t as expensive as I anticipated. I’m going to looking into a carpenter too. If you find somewhere please keep me posted! Thanks

We’ve ordered our kitchen from Handmade kitchens in Claygate now called Davey and Dalger - is that who you mean? Very reasonable and great looking kitchens daveyandalger.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Handmadekitchens-Catalogue-v13.pdf
mumdone · 10/06/2020 05:24

@Qc16 thanks for the info. Yes that’s who I mean. Very reasonable but when you add on painting, fitting, appliances, work tops it all starts to mount up. Are you sourcing everything and painting yourself?

Ooh that Claygate one looks gorgeous! I’ll have to go visit the showroom when it reopens. I’ve also spotted a small company in Godalming called Coeur kitchens - got a brochure but not sure if it’s good yet but definitely quoted a lot cheaper than TH. Will keep you posted

Yes we’ll be sourcing work surfaces, appliances ourselves and have our builder fit it and paint it.

Interesting that going back through old posts that HMKC used to be the go to mumsnet kitchen supplier and more recently it's now DIY kitchens.

HMKC have just rebranded, and now a splattering of threads have stated mentioning them ?? I wonder how many of these threads are started by employees of each company ?? Media covert advertising maybe ??

mumdone · 17/06/2020 08:12

This one isn’t!! Just someone that wants a new kitchen :)

OP posts:
drmichellejones · 17/06/2020 10:38

Same. I just to brainstorm and make sure I don’t get mugged off paying some company loads. Nothing better than recommendations when it comes to these big spends 😉

DIY Kitchens and HMKC - now renamed Davey & Alger are not in the same league. DIY kitchens on their website compare themselves to the likes of B&Q, Magnet and Howdens whereas those of us who are having a Davey & Alger kitchens aspire to having a Neptune or DeVol kitchen but can’t afford them so are getting the same quality at a fraction of the price. So not the same market!
HforHotel · 17/06/2020 14:06

One of closest friends had a new HMKC kitchen installed last summer. It looks nice, but it’s not to the same standard of Neptune etc. It could be because she had it installed by her own (not so great) builder and found someone else to paint it and then someone different to do the worktops and fit handles. It was good value for what she paid, but her house is expensive and I think she skimped on the quality of kitchen that a buyer may be expecting at that price point. Obviously I wouldn’t say this to her. I think she may have had a much better finish using the kitchen company to install, too.

Qc16 · 17/06/2020 14:19

Thanks for the warning HforHotel - we will have our builder who is a joiner by trade fitting it so know it should be well done. Haven't decided who’s painting it but the Polish guy who did our previous one was great if I can get him again.
