Anyone thinking they might escape to the country when this is all over?

Just that really. Once the world comes back to normal, whenever that may be, anyone think this might prompt life changes and moves?

Obviously some will, sadly, be forced is businesses don’t survive. But beyond that - is anyone thinking it’s time to move/ make life changes etc?

Move to the country? No way. At the moment I'm extremely grateful that I live within walking distance of 7 supermarkets and numerous small grocery stores.

Also grateful that I'm in a job that can I can continue to do from home and therefore I'm still employed (for now, anyway).

So basically feeling fortunate right now, rather than prompting a desire for life changes.

wildflowersandweeds · 21/03/2020 08:05

We moved last year and are so glad we did! Plenty of space, lots of gardening to do. It feels like life is going pretty much as normal out here.

Movinghouseatlast · 21/03/2020 08:40

We also moved- to a rural coastal village- a year ago and are very glad we did. If we are going to have to be at home with no money I would rather be able to see the sea every day. Our local village shops are well stocked too.

The downside is that we now rely on tourism for our income....

Rollercoaster1920 · 21/03/2020 08:45

I think the about of remote / work from home going on, there will be more looking to do just that!

I'm glad I went for a shabby house with garden over a nice flat when I bought.

MistyIsland · 21/03/2020 08:46

We live rurally and love it.

We can go days without seeing another person, which is great at the moment.

Due to not living near a shop I’m relatively well stocked so have no need to panic buy. Can probably scrounge up enough food to last us 3 weeks.

Lots of wooded areas and dog walks and I know we won’t come into contact with anyone. Kids can play outside and be ok.

lazylinguist · 21/03/2020 08:54

We moved to a rural area 5 years ago and I'm very thankful to be living in a place where it's easy to get fresh air, exercise and spirit-lifting views while keeping our distance from other people. We are going on a lovely mountain walk today.

In spite of being in the countryside, I still have supermarkets within easy reach. They seem pretty well-stocked too. I'm very glad not to be a city-dweller right now tbh.

HappydaysArehere · 21/03/2020 09:07

No way. I like bus routes, doctors, dentists near. Local shops. Looks alright on the tv but I know people who live in rural areas and it is something I would hate.

missyB1 · 21/03/2020 13:20

Not the Countryside as such but I am now considering a move nearer the Coast at some point in the future. I like a milder climate so it will need to be south rather than North, quite fancying Suffolk.
The only thing is this crisis is teaching us how important friends and community support is, and I have good friends here.

skippy67 · 21/03/2020 15:21

No way.

isseywith4vampirecats · 21/03/2020 15:58

no thanks I like all the conveniences of town ten minutes from my house if I want country or seaside pretty we get on our motorbike and go for the day having lived in a major seaside town I have seen the other side of the glitz and glam the amount of people on benefits living in b and bs the drugs the drink problems the lack of proper shops that are not aimed at the tourists the no work in the winter yes the beach and sea were nice to walk the dogs but only in the winter when it was empty, countryside pretty but once again in the winter hard work to go anywhere

SwedishEdith · 21/03/2020 20:55

No way. As I get older, I want to be within easy reach of food shops and a hospital.

Cyberworrier · 21/03/2020 21:36

Our plan has been to move to the country in 4-5 years..
I was saying to my partner how this makes me wish we were in country now. For a bigger garden, quieter walks for the dog, generally getting away from what feels too crowded London.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/03/2020 21:38

We moved out of London. So pleased that we are where we are now.

missyB1 · 22/03/2020 15:41

I know I said we’d like to move to the coast, but I realised how lucky we are this morning when we drove a short distance to walk in the Cotswold Way where we saw no one. We live in a town but can be in the middle of nowhere fairly quickly.

Troels · 23/03/2020 17:47

Were in a small village, it's a drive to get anything.
So I think we'd prefer to be even more rural, we have to drive anyway, so adding 10 minutes is not a big deal. I'd like a massive garden to have fruit trees and chickens again.

RosesandIris · 23/03/2020 17:52

I definitely want to move to the country. I would like peace and quiet, no traffic, clean air and few people. I moved to the city a year and a half ago and really regret it. When this is over we are thinking of moving to a rural area within reach of a town with amenities and supermarkets. Any recommendations? I have realised I would much rather have a bigger garden and more space and less to do in terms of 'entertainment'. I would like a dog and lots of great walks from the door.

Bluejuicyapple · 23/03/2020 17:54

Good god no. I’m so grateful to be in a big city, no issues with supplies of anything. I think I’d be suicidal in the country

BubblesBuddy · 23/03/2020 18:26

The Chilterns. Plenty of small villages with rubbish broadband.

Lightsunbeam · 23/03/2020 18:33

I know what you’re saying because I’ve been thinking the same thing.

However, being in London and close to loads of shops that have EVERYTHING (eggs, milk, pasta, rice, fresh veggies, hand soap etc etc) - I’m feeling pretty grateful. At the moment, london feels like the easiest place to be. (Will be less so when lockdown happens, I’m sure! My garden is pretty small - but grateful that I have a garden at all.)

EasterEggz · 23/03/2020 18:45

I read your thread title as "escape the country" to which my first thought was- yes please! Somewhere with a decent government like Scandinavia or New Zealand would be great.

Tonyaster · 23/03/2020 18:48

I am unbelievably thankful to live in the rural countryside right now. Really, genuinely grateful.

DesLynamsMoustache · 23/03/2020 18:52

We don't sadly although we do live in a fairly small village, but my parents do and I'm so glad! They have loads of food and veg in the freezer and in their outbuildings, and they don't come into contact with people at all. They have access to milk, eggs, bread etc from the local farm shop and haven't needed to join the supermarket madness, and they have a huge garden and lots of land that they can spend their time in while they can't go anywhere. Their life is fairly unchanged, aside from not being able to see the grandchildren.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/03/2020 18:54

God no. Plenty of food in shops near me and a hospital less than a mile away. (London)

madcatladyforever · 23/03/2020 18:57

I moved to the country and got an NHS job just before the shit hit the fan. Thank God. One month later and I would have been fucked.

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 23/03/2020 18:59

No. Rural health and public services provision are generally dire.
