Has anyone got a whirlpool/jet bathtub? Do you love it or hate it?

We're about to renovate our bathroom and I've been thinking about having a jet/whirlpool bath...

I have a bath probably at least every weekend, so use it often to chill and relax after a hard London week - so use wouldn't be the issue.

But it feels like it would just be a nightmare to clean, especially with all the limescale!

Does anyone have any experiences? Love it or leave it?

I just remember turning on the jets in my relative's house as a treat for the DC and the entire bath being filled with green mould bits Hmm

Omg 🤢 putting me right off!! Maybe just a super deep bath would be better

I have one. Don't bother!! Too noisy and the caps are constantly coming off jets. It's expensive for what it is and definitely not worth it in my opinion, I wish I'd not bothered!!

clpsmum · 27/02/2020 20:10

It's not relaxing either!

FickleTickle · 27/02/2020 20:13

Had one and hated it

pookypup · 27/02/2020 20:19

one was in a bathroom in our house when we moved in - noisy and just felt grubby. Replaced with a lovely deep free standing bath. Classic and so much nicer.

sojo44 · 27/02/2020 20:21

The bathroom would be my little haven to get away for 30mins.

The gunk, loud sound and constant fixing of caps definitely sound like the most anti relaxing things ever and far from what I'm after ha!

Thank you so much for all your help!! 💓

There was one here when we bought the house 16 years ago. We are not bath people so hardly used it. Then around five years ago some of the pipes started splitting as they had become brittle so we didn't use it for a couple of years. Eventually when we redid the bathroom we put in a new one (corner bath, water and air jets, lights, the works). I think we've used it three times in three years. BUT. Please remember that we are not bath people so that might be why. However our en suite is huge and it seemed a waste in a way to remove the bath and be left with more empty space (we have a large shower too). HTH.

rachelinindia · 27/02/2020 21:40

We have one - previous owners installed it - it's awful! Really noisy and pipes gets full of gunk that comes out when you fill the bath, not even when you turn it on. Saving up for a new bathroom at the moment.

MazDazzle · 27/02/2020 21:44

We once rented a house with one and when we turned it on the smell was like rotten eggs!

My sister’s house used to have one that had some sort of algae growing in the pipes. NOTHING would shift it. Everything she did just made it grow even more. It was like something from Stranger Things!

Blueblackrose · 27/02/2020 21:44

Just imagine all the yucky water trapped in those jets - it's a bacterial paradise - no thanks!

TheGreatWave · 27/02/2020 22:00

We have one that was here when we moved in. I don't use it that much, it is quite noisy and the jets can be uncomfortable. The only thing I really use it for it to make the bubble bath turn into lots of bubbles and I then turn it off.

sproutsandparsnips · 27/02/2020 22:07

Got rid of ours. Nothing but trouble, black mouldy bits, and used it very little in practice.

TheGreatWave · 27/02/2020 23:05

I would replace ours but I have a feeling it would turn into a total bathroom re-furb which would not be great to embark on as it is fully tiled (complete with flowery border tile) and we have many other jobs that need to be done first.

There is always a line around the bath when we have had the jets on.

madmumofteens · 27/02/2020 23:13

I had one and loved it; however had to be removed after 18 months as it leaked had to have the whole bathroom including joists replaced I wouldn't bother if I were you OP.

Franticbutterfly · 28/02/2020 08:33

Mil has one, never uses it, I suspect it harbours legionella!

Knowivedonewrong · 28/02/2020 11:30

Don't do it! They are disgusting things. So glad when we replaced ours.

nicknamehelp · 28/02/2020 11:42

Our inherited one is very narrow a a bath when in it so not as comfy as a normal bath. They are very noisy and if not cleaned properly a health hazard if turned on. I would not replace it with another.

crapette · 28/02/2020 11:46

I have one (it came with the house) .
I don't use it that often but I do like it.

Son-in-law wanted to have a go - I said fine, explained how to work it and re-iterated several times not to put any sort of bubbles in

20 mins later cue very panicked yelling from my bathroom. I sent my daughter in to investigate and the entire room was almost full of bubbles Grin.

juggler82 · 28/02/2020 15:20

We moved into a house with one fitted. We chuck in some whirlpool bath cleaner every two or three weeks and turn the jets on so it isn’t manky. However, I think we’ve only used it properly three times in the five years we’ve been here - if we ever re-do the bathroom it’ll be replaced with a normal bath!

Devlesko · 28/02/2020 15:23

I have two friends who have them and both have been shocked at their bills being over a grand after a spell of using it.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 28/02/2020 15:29

We used to have one and agree they can be very noisy. If you don't use them super regularly and keep the pipes clean then you'll have dirty bits in the water when you turn it on, with the accompanying yukky smell. I personally wouldn't recommend having one.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/02/2020 15:33

devlesco....you are not confusing whirlpool bath with hot tub fetid garden sex pond maybe??

We have one...the kids loved it, dh is the only person who ever has a bath now there are no small people about and it's just not used.

We never had bother with festering pipes, but it was supposedly self draining? so basically the pipes are empty unless the bath is filled??? I bet it's FULL of spiders though now!
I much prefer a shower!

BruceAndNosh · 28/02/2020 16:08

Similar here. We bought a house where the pump was broken, we had it fixed..... The stuff that came out! ShockShock
We put cleaner in it and turned it on as directed... 3 foot of brown green foam towering over the bath....

Humina · 28/02/2020 16:14

We rented a house with one and it was nothing but trouble.

I was sold some sort of cleaner to clean out the pipes and it was like pure acid, I could barely breathe near it. Really not worth the bother.
