Anyone put a new kitchen in and been dissapointed?

I feel quite underwhelmed with my new kitchen - I played it quite safe and went for light island and units but now I bitterly regret not getting something with colour and a different style - I did months of Planning to try and achieve a high end look but to me it looks cheap - I've been looking at it today and just think I should have gone for the other one we looked at, I am also looking at replacement door company's which is insane!!!

My kitchen is not paintable.

I keep comparing it to kitchens on Pinterest and Instagram and feel so regretful

Anyone been in the same boat??

I wanted to love my new kitchen 😩

Can you paint the walls a solid colour to make the units stand out? Or accessorise with colour?

Remmy123 · 08/02/2020 13:36

It's a big room so a solid colour won't work either unfortunately and I don't think I want the Units to stand out

Currently the room only has a sofa and d table

Hoping with pics on wall it may look better 😩

It sounds o.k, Go accessorie shopping maybe?

We installed a Matt white kitchen recently, white worktops, navy island.
Nice but dull until we finished with with a deep blue high gloss Alusplash backsplash

How about popping a photo up and see if anyone has any inspiration?

Frenchw1fe · 08/02/2020 14:30

I had a small kitchrn in my last house so went for white units and then painted one wall lime green. It made a huge difference.
You could get brightly coloured kettle, toaster etc.

Frenchw1fe · 08/02/2020 14:32

Obviously you have a big area. Do you have splashbacks or tiles yet?

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 08/02/2020 14:36

Don't be afraid of a block of colour, it doesn't have to be an entire wall .
Either Dulux or Crown do an online visualiser where you can upload a photo of your room and Mark out and "paint" areas. I found it invaluable in a previous house where I used a lot of colour.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 08/02/2020 14:39

Accessories make a huge difference. I was worried that blue and white would be cold so I have touches of wood, the tea and coffee sit on a square wooden tray as does the oil salt and pepper.

Apolloanddaphne · 08/02/2020 14:42

Post a photo and we can maybe help with how to liven it up?

Remmy123 · 08/02/2020 15:15

I don't think a photo will help - just wondering if anyone that has been underwhelmed/regrettful got over it? Sounds so dramatic doesn't but months of planning .. maybe I just built it up too much!

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo absolutely love your kitchen. Do you mind me asking where the units are from?

soakedat3 · 08/02/2020 21:39

Not 100% sure how a kitchen with a quartz marble-esque splashback could look cheap but maybe colour on the walls?

We had ours done recently. It's quite light but a mix of oak and white units with marble look worktops and marble look tiles on splashback and up past the extractor. I love it still. Kind of want a colour on the still white walls though but cannot find one I like enough.

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo - kitchen looks so fab still! I keep seeing ads for Alusplash everywhere now and always think of your kitchen.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 08/02/2020 23:52

A photo will help massively, we can’t help unless we see it, you could be panicking about nothing, but if your fears are valid people will help and come up with suggestions.

Remmy123 · 09/02/2020 06:54

I wanted to know if anyone ever felt the same, not suggestions because ironically I'm pretty good at interior which is why I'm feeling really stupid for chosing a bland and boring pale kitchen by playing it 'safe'

You could regret ANYTHING. I think you just have to own your choices. It might grow on you.

Remmy123 · 09/02/2020 08:34

I think it's just me...remember being a bit fixated on a decision I made for my loft which now doesn't both me at all ... hmmmm maybe this shouid go into mental health 😂

I recently did my kitchen and I have so many regrets, when doing up a kitchen your suppose to be so happy and I was just stressed about everything. I picked all light colours. The floor is white marble worktop, cabinets light grey, worktop white marble and wall tiles white marble, so my kitchen is very light, I don’t know what to do, it looks very plain, I don’t know what to do to make a bit cozy, what accessories should I use to make the kitchen have warmth and homely. I don’t know if I am stressing out over nothing but every time I look at my kitchen I do not like it. Please help if anyone has any suggestions in what to add to make my kitchen.

TheMagicDeckchair · 14/07/2022 21:17

@Rosyaba what about some copper accessories? I saw a light kitchen similar to yours with copper light fittings and it looked great.

We did our kitchen a couple of years ago and there were things that I regretted like the tiles and wall colour, and some of the fitted appliances are a bit iffy but it was a package so there wasn’t much choice available. If I was doing it again I’d have a greater input into the materials choices. But with the aesthetics, I couldn’t justify the waste of ripping out tiles or repainting newly painted walls so I may just give it a facelift in a few years when the walls and tiles are scruffier. I notice them less now it’s been there for a while.

It was my first kitchen redesign and it’s been a bit of a learning curve, there’s things I would do differently next time.

Minimalme · 14/07/2022 21:28

You are placing so much importance on the way it looks op, that - with respect - you have lost perspective.

You have a new kitchen, that is a wonderful thing! It will be clean and solid and wonderfully functional to cook in.

You are massively overthinking it. Just buy some nice tea towels and a high end kettle and stop giving it this much thought.

GlumyGloomer · 14/07/2022 21:36

Not a kitchen but we have bathroom regret, and wish we'd gone with the other bunch. I got carried away with trying to make it not claustrophobic, but the sink is tiny and not very practical. Getting a whole room done costs so much too, agonising to get it wrong.

Trivester · 14/07/2022 21:38

I get buyers remorse (or rather gut clenching anxiety) with expensive purchases and I have residual childhood issues around making the “right” decisions and “good taste” (I can hear my granny sniff just tying out that phrase).

It’s hard to explain but it takes me a while to settle into big purchases and actually figure out whether I like them or not.

I have had a few expensive regrets but I’m trying to accept that that’s just life - some things don’t pan out the way I wanted.

I noticed you mentioned Pinterest - would you try photographing your kitchen, taking time to style an area, etc. I think we get used to seeing close, cropped stylish photos and wide angled real life doesn’t seem as good, because it’s a trick of the eye. You might love the photos of your kitchen more than you’re loving the 3D version right now.
