Fitted wardrobe cost

I’ve never bought fitted wardrobes before, can anyone help with prices they’ve paid.

Floor to ceiling wardrobes, 3m long with a mix of drawers, shelves and rails inside and shaker style doors. One side of the ceiling is slightly sloped. I’m based in the north west.

The quote we’ve received from a local firm is £4,500 which doesn’t include handles or painting.

Does this sound about right? Seems a lot to me but as I say I’ve never done this before.

I work for a bespoke furniture company. For similar we’d probably be charging around £5500-6000 but that would include hand painting and handles, soft close drawers, a full fit by cabinet makers etc. So you’re not far off bar the lack of paint! Handles you can get dirt cheap from places like Hafele, painting is going to be difficult to get a good job once it’s in place. Who has quoted you this? Are there any furniture makers locally who could possibly do the same job with painting?

Iola4 · 07/02/2020 00:27

We used Sharp's. We had a 3 door floor to ceiling fitted wardrobe, railing and shelving plus 2 huge bedside drawers 3 soft closing drawers each and a large bay window seat with storage cupboards all for £5000. Brilliant job.
I was worried after reading so many bad reviews but we can't fault them.

Youcunnyfunt · 07/02/2020 00:32

😲 I’m SE and just paid £1200 for two (1m wide) fitted wardrobes, mix of shelves, cabinets and rails.
I painted it though and am fitting handles and mirrors myself.
My chippy did an amazing job. I would ask around town for any chippies rather than a furniture company (I did see quotes from niche companies asking for £5k +).

TwoBlueFish · 07/02/2020 07:38

This quote was a local man and son joinery firm, they specialise in things like alcoves, wardrobes, etc.

I have 2 other companies due to give quotes in the next couple of days, so will update.

They're really expensive. We've just created a dressing room area and the quotes we had were crazy. We needed two runs with a width of 2.4m and a run with a width of 1.6m.

In the end I reused carcasses that we already had from old wardrobes that had been installed circa 1990. Supplemented these with a couple of extras from ikea and replaced all the doors and handles with ones from ikea. I then got carpenters to come in for a day and a half and make them look fully fitted.

Get Ikea pax wardrobes they are amazing and you can customise the insides. They come in 2 heights and depths too x

PiafPilaf · 07/02/2020 08:06

Our quote was similar so we went to IKEA and bought Pax wardrobes for about £1k and fitted them ourselves. They’re fab!

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/02/2020 08:18

This is is my dressing room which is almost finished (still needs coving, island unit, carpet, ceiling light, decorating etc) using ikea doors as above. I actually used kitchen doors rather than the ikea pax system.

We've just had one built - it was a family member but we did pay him to do it. Materials came to nearly £500 which I was a bit shocked about especially as we decided to use an old chest of drawers we had rather than buy new ones - he was able to cut them down and fix them into the wardrobe.

It came to about £1500. It isn't painted yet and we bought the handles. In my experience, they are significantly more expensive than you'd imagine.

What a great idea! Will store that one for the future!

RedRiverShore · 07/02/2020 09:46

I would also get Ikea Pax, you can get them made up for you if you don't want to make them yourself as they are rather large.

2catsand2kids · 07/02/2020 10:57

We’ve just had a quote for a 2.7m run of fitted wardrobes, floor to ceiling and it was £800, not including painting, from a local recommended carpenter. So it’s definitely worth getting a range of quotes.

TwoBlueFish · 07/02/2020 13:36

pax would be less than £1k but I don’t know how I’d get it to look properly finished. We have sloped ceiling in the corner so a 236cm unit wouldn’t fit there so would need a small unit then taller ones. Ceiling height is about 255cm so would have a gap to fill at the top.

Had a local company come out today and will get the quote from them on Monday. They seemed more customisable and included painting. I also have Hammonds due on Sunday just to see how a big firm compares.

They look great Hasa. (love your name by the way, ds is obsessed with BOM). We are about to move into a house and the fitted units in dd's room are very dated 1980's so I am trying to think of ways to update. Only thing is, my builder/joiner says if I get IKEA furniture he is NOT fitting them as he doesn't rate them.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/02/2020 16:13

I had one done with a local company. It cost £2,100 and was done in one day. Sharps quoted £,3600 and Slidrobes £2,600 for an identical product.
It was one of the best things I've done. Storage space has doubled. And it looks great. I absolutely love it.

pussinwellyboots · 07/02/2020 18:27

I've been looking at the wardrobes from instrument www.instrument.london/ which seem to be really good value and they will assemble on site.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 07/02/2020 18:40

We are just looking for something similar and DH found this [https://diyalcovecabinets.co.uk/]

AConvivialHost · 07/02/2020 18:51

That seems excessive to me. We're in the NW and had 12 feet of wardrobes fitted, with built in shelves and differing height rails and also have a sloping ceiling and it was £1800.

TwoBlueFish · 07/02/2020 20:13

@AConvivialHost would you be able to share the company name?

++ bumping this thread.
I'm getting 2 fitted wardrobes and bay window seat done.
Wardrobe 1 - 3m
Wardrobe 2 - 2m
Bay window seat
Sharps quote is £11k after all their usual discounts

My carpenter has given me a quote of £3500 incl materials (excl handles). They are using 18mm MFC (melamine faced chipboard); Blume hinges, soft close drawers etc.

Any thoughts? Is this good deal ?
