Help! Need advice for bathroom paint colour

Hi... I have a small powder room with no windows. The flooring is white and the wall containing the basin is black tiled about halfway ( pic for reference). What colour should I paint the walls? My partner is not keen on leaving it white or open to wallpapering. ( which were my thoughts) What colour would work best here?

Thanks in advance

What colour would echo those in the rest of the property?

Reearry · 21/01/2020 15:20

We moved into the house recently and it is painted all white. Planning to paint the rest of the house in neutral colours such as grey, beige etc. Looking for a modern/ contemporary feel all over the home

You could paint it almost any colour (if you removed the red accessories and got some new matching stuff)! I am planning to paint our bathroom F&B sulking room pink (if DH agrees!!).

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/01/2020 15:22

I'd go for white too. I'd swap the red accessories for white or black or chrome to match the fixtures.

I’m considering dark green for our small bathroom. Lots of people saying it will make the room feel too small though

lilgreen · 21/01/2020 15:24

If it’s a room without natural light, you will always put the light on so you could go with any colour. I love dark walls with a white suite. Charcoal grey, midnight blue, forest green. Dark colours really make the white stand out. Make it rich with gold or brass accessories.

lilgreen · 21/01/2020 15:29

@Legomanships it’s not a room that needs to feel big. I’d go with it. I have a navy blue downstairs loo, charcoal bathroom and dark blue sitting room. It feels better not smaller.

Letthemysterybe · 21/01/2020 15:32

I’d remove the cabinet and get a mirror cut to fit the entire wall space above the tiles. And then find some other storage solution!

Reearry · 21/01/2020 15:33

Thank you all for your suggestions. My DH is not keen on keeping it white or open to wallpapering. At a later stage, I would like to upgrade the powder room and bathrooms with new hardware and mirror but at the moment the budget does not permit making any changes other than changing the paint colour.

I am finding it difficult to choose a paint colour because of the bold black tile colour.

In that case, to go with black, red and white I think grey is probably the best option.

Have to say the cost of a loo brush and loo roll is dispenser can be minimal. Ikea, B&M?

Tartyflette · 21/01/2020 15:41

A warm ivory paint colour (there are loads of actual shades to choose from) looks good with black, or perhaps a cool mint green. Ditch the red accessories either way!

Reearry · 21/01/2020 15:43

@lilgreen DH liked the red colour and bought the accessories recently ( not matter of cost when it comes to them)

Ikea do bog brush sets for £1.00.

Toilet roll holder
www.ikea.com/es/en/p/enudden-toilet-roll-holder-white-20288270/

Or for a bit more, the Toftan series in black and cream will cost you €16 for a toilet brush, holder and pedal bin.

Tartyflette · 21/01/2020 15:55

In that case i'd get more red accessories so it looks a bit more deliberate. Hand towel, flannels, something decorative?

Reearry · 21/01/2020 16:06

Ditching the red accessories would definitely open up the options for paint colours. And while buying new furniture has given our bank account a beatingGrin Grin we are in a position of being able to purchase new toilet role holders etc Wink. The cost is not the issue in the case of replacing them... It is if replacing them with new ones is worth the hassle of putting off DH when he likes the red bins and toilet holders. Think there are bigger things to have disagreements on with DH than over toilet roll holders GrinGrin

@Tartyflette that's a great suggestion! Thank you. Thinking of painting it grey as @lilgreen suggested and adding more red accessories

Can anyone recommend a nice grey that would look good in the bathroom?

lilgreen · 21/01/2020 16:20

P.S you seem overly concerned about upsetting your DH. Let him get on with it if he’s so fussy!

lilgreen · 21/01/2020 16:22

I’d go with slate grey.

SillyMummy123 · 21/01/2020 16:27

I'd suggest to sticking with a light colour as dark colours usually make a place feel smaller.

lilgreen · 21/01/2020 16:29

A pale room can be dull even if it looks bigger.

viques · 21/01/2020 16:36

Since it is a small space and there is nothing you can do about that, I would take advantage of the size and find some really over the top wallpaper with a very dramatic pattern, preferably something quite dark and exotic, I am thinking peacocks, Tigers, jungles, exotic plants, not all together though! Would go fine with the black tiles. You are not going to be spending long in there so it won't be claustrophobic but wil be adventurous and fun. Would only take a few rolls, just make sure that you have a good extractor fan.

followingonfromthat · 21/01/2020 17:04

A dark colour on the walls would make it too claustrophobic for me, and grey would be depressing. I'd ditch the red accessories and go for biscuit or natural pale sage green paint.

Then you can choose towels in almost any colour; have chrome, cream, white or wooden accessories, and natural colour storage baskets etc.
