Does anyone live in a new build next to social housing?

If you do please tell me its ok. We have recently exchanged on our new build and are waiting for completion. There is going to be 25 housing association homes on the development. Two are already up and occupied and so far one has a broken window (boarded up) and today there is a Tesco shopping trolley abandoned outside.

Eek (or am I being a snob!).

its just a shame some people let the side down, whether they are in a private or HA home, on my road (which i all priavtely 1020-30's owned homes) there is a house that is so run down its looks like it has been in a fire, there are scraps on nets curtain at some of the windows some of the windows are broken and boarded the garden is a like a jungle but because its in a private road there is nothing anyone can do, council wont come anywhere near. atleast if it is HA or council they ahve responsibility to keep it maintained

chocolatemummy · 19/08/2007 16:03

lol that ws suposed to say privately owned 1920-30's houses

barbamama · 19/08/2007 18:11

Chocolatemummy - exactly the point I was making - causes mutual resentment - as can be seen from this thread. I think it is sad that you can't even have a rational conversation about housing policy in this country without people getting arsey. I wish that people would stop coming on and saying "oh well all people in HA properties are obviously the same aren't they" as as far as i can tell noone has said that. It is always a minority from any group that let things down - but unfortunately they are very visible and contribute to the misguided notion held by some (not me) that all social housing tenants/owners are like that. All I know is that when I lived in a normal, mixed street in London that had all types of housing and people and incomes on it nobody so much as noticed anyone else. On the development I lived on where it was so obviously and newly and badly shoved together (to the extent that the HA properties were built from different colour and worse quality brick - can you believe it?) all it did was lead to resentment and made it a very unpleasant place to live. And if you think my opinions are bad you should hear the complaints I had to listen to once a week for 3 years from people who thought that all HA tenants were little better than animals from the way they spoke and social housing tenant who were threatening to attack the snobs for looking at them the wrong way. Clearly this is awful and not in any way healthy - but like I said, it only seems to happen on new estates, in my experience at least. Peronally I think the greedy developers (and possibly the HA's?) have a lot to answer for.

Anyway, this must be really worrying the OP - it sounds like you all live on much nicer (possibly smaller) estates than I did so good luck to you all, enjoy living there. Oh and of all the many, many, many complaints I had to listen to, interestingly I never heard anyone complaining about a broken window ......

id not buy one tbh

Fimbo · 19/08/2007 19:17

I wanted to stay in the village as the schools are very good, my dd has already had the upheaval of moving from Scotland to here and is now settled - all other nice areas round here the schools are oversubscribed.

It was either buy the new build or go on renting forever as there was/is no other suitable houses here. We are bursting out of the rented place as it is.

barbamama · 19/08/2007 19:50

If you know the area already I'm sure it will be fine (we didn't)

Fimbo · 19/08/2007 19:53

Thank you! I could tell you me tale of woe but to quickly summarise - we sold our own house and were buying the house of our dreams which fell through. I then had about a week to try to find a place to rent and the whole thing has just been a nightmare from start to finish.

Fimbo · 19/08/2007 19:54

Oh and the estate is only small in comparison to some - 95 houses in total.

ah yes
do they overlook your garden?

barbamama · 19/08/2007 19:57

I'm sure it will be great - I believe in some sort of karma when it comes to houses - if you have a bad experience then you are due to be very happy in your next home - we certainly are! Hope it goes really well and a new house will be great to actually live in with everything modern and new, we really liked our actual house.

We have to pass 2 to get to our house(i.e. the broken window one) but we are not over-looked by them or vice versa.

Tbh I didn't realise that the 2 we do pass were HA until I was looking at the plans one day (I thought they were part of the developers houses as they are selling some that are very similar) all the rest of them are in one area and sort of hidden behind a few of the bought houses.

One of them could be the shared ownership house my DSD has just moved into with her boyfriend.

I sincerely hope she won't be behaving antisocially

Please go round and tell her off if she does!

From what you say about the school I can't imagine it will be anywhere near any of the real problem areas in the place you live (iirc you live near where I used to), so I'm sure it will be fine

southeastastra · 19/08/2007 20:19

you'll be find, start a neighbourhood scheme and plant things

Fimbo · 19/08/2007 20:22

. Whereabouts?

OP posts:
Fimbo · 19/08/2007 20:23

Lol about planting things - as part of the development there are two humungis planters right outside my front door!

OP posts:
southeastastra · 19/08/2007 20:28

well there's a start! round here the new developments have huge stone things, about 5ft, i don't know what they're trying to achieve

be a busybody

FrayedKnot · 19/08/2007 20:30

Actually Fimbo it won;t be the development where my DSD has moved because their development is finished, they moved in earlier this year, and is probably a few miles from where you are (you are in the village beginning with "H", non?).

But I'm just trying to point out shared ownership is likely to be attracting young people trying to get on the housing ladder, who could be terrible, or they could be fine!

There seemed to be loads of that type of housing being built when I last visited (new development just outside Wymondham with shared ownership / local workers thingie iirc?)

Fimbo · 19/08/2007 20:34

Ah I know the development you mean in Wymondham and yes I am in H. Are you out near Dereham way.

OP posts:
Fimbo · 19/08/2007 20:37

Wymondham development is still going on, its going to be rolled out over 5 years about 3,000 houses in total. The schools are just about coping but there is to be another development of the same amount starting shortly. Then there's Queens Hills and Cringleford.

I lived on a part social housing/part private street for years & the only problem I ever had was a bit of reverse snobbery from the mums in the Council houses. They wouldn't talk to the mums in the private houses, which I thought was daft.I always said hello whether they blanked me or not.

We had 14 HA association properties built behind us & despite a lot of my neighbours getting worried about it,we never had a problem with anyone living there.Ironically,it was the son of the people who bought the most expensive house on the street who woke us up in the early hours, trying to break into his own house & fighting in the street.

I now live in a very chocolate box, conservation area village which is regarded as very posh & desirable. There is a huge house down the lane from me which has had a broken window for weeks .Should I be worried?

Fimbo · 19/08/2007 20:59

Yes
