Wallpaper/feature wall

Debating whether to repaint whole bedroom or to have a feature wall papered wall. DH wants to and I'm not sure - is it becoming a bit passé now? This isn't going to be our forever house and I don't want to be doing major redecorating in a few years to sell.

What do you think?

No. It’s passé! You are right and it gives anyone who wants to remove it far more work to do. Either wallpaper the room or paint it. Use accessories such as bedspreads and cushions to add colour and interest. Even curtains.

Moondancer73 · 06/10/2019 14:59

It's really not passé at all. If you want a feature wall then absolutely go for it, I think one papered wall looks much better than a whole papered room, or a whole painted room

Yoohoo16 · 06/10/2019 20:07

I think do whatever you like, it’s your home and you have to live with it. My home is completely unfashionable but I like it.

A few years is long time to live with decor you don't love! Live for the day OP's DH and go for it with a feature wall :)

ThisMustBeMyDream · 06/10/2019 22:22

I like to do two walls paper, and the other two painted. I have two rooms (living/diner and my bedroom) like this. They are my favourite rooms in the house!

BubblesBuddy · 06/10/2019 23:15

OP: have a look at the House and Garden website - bedrooms. There are some stunning ideas on that site. However not one has a wallpapered feature wall! It’s not a chic look and you are correct, OP. It’s either all wallpaper or all paint. Show DH the wonderful bedroom ideas and he will change his mind!

(Also getting the edges of the wallpaper straight in the two room corners is a total nightmare! Save yourselves the angst!)

td035050 · 07/10/2019 01:54

Personally I think you should do what you like. I recently did a feature wall in my hall and I love it and have had many compliments on it....

DramaAlpaca · 07/10/2019 01:59

Wallpaper on one 'feature' wall isn't a good look. I don't mind a different paint colour in a room, but wallpaper on one wall is just a bit, well, 'not chic' as another poster very politely said above.

MrsFezziwig · 07/10/2019 02:42

I love a feature wall (probably because I have lively tastes in wallpaper and having a whole room in my choice of wallpaper would be way over the top).
Cushions on beds, however - proper passé.

OhioOhioOhio · 07/10/2019 03:01

Feature wall. Definitely not whole room.

Kiwiinkits · 07/10/2019 03:06

Wallpapered feature walls are Passé; you were right.
Half painted walls are ‘in’ as a painted head boards. But those trends will pass too. Spend your money on a huge artwork for above your bed that you love and can take with you.

Bottledate · 07/10/2019 07:56

This. I wouldn't let a single feature wall put me off buying a house I really wanted. You can paint over it if necessary when the time comes to sell.

Fairylea · 07/10/2019 07:59

I think if you’re planning to sell it then just keep it fairly neutral and painted. However if you’re planning to stay for a while go for a bold feature wall, they’re lovely if done well.

kjhkj · 07/10/2019 08:04

I think it entirely depends on the room. Spend some time looking through the thousands of photos on Houzz or pinterest.

I am currently in the dining room which has wainscotting (panelling) on half the wall and wallpaper above, in the kitchen we have a "feature wall" but have then also wallpapered inside all of the glass cabinets and so the wallpaper is effectively on those walls too. The living room is entirely painted, the hallway is entirely wallpapered.

I'm just doing the bedroom and only two walls will be wallpapered. The wallpaper is really expensive and I'm not wasting it on the two walls which are mainly window and curtains.

longearedbat · 07/10/2019 08:08

It's your house; do what you want and what makes you happy. Who cares if some people think it's outdated? It's what you think that matters.
Plus, if you decide to change it when you move, it really isn't difficult to strip a papered wall.

kjhkj · 07/10/2019 09:02

The other things is that its a bedroom. So literally nobody apart from your immediate family is likely to even see it.

Solina · 07/10/2019 09:11

When we bought our house it had a wallpaper feature wall in every single room, didn't stop me buying it.

We stripped all of the wallpaper and painted everywhere as I am not a fan of feature walls. However, ran out of paint in one of the bedrooms (had no idea how much paint we would need) and couldn't face yet another trip to b&q so that room now has a painted feature wall. Looks pretty good, I think because the two paints have similar undertones and the feature wall is pretty light in colour.

But my advise would be to go with what ever you want and not try and please people who aren't even thinking of buying your place yet.

BubblesBuddy · 07/10/2019 09:26

It’s the OP that didn’t want the wallpaper wall!!! It’s her DH that does. So stick to what you want OP and ignore everyone who cannot read the question. Classy bedrooms never go out of fashion.

Kamma89 · 07/10/2019 09:28

Who cares! Your house, you live in it. Go with what you like. Plenty of people on here going on about their dark blue totally on trend kitchens which to me already look dated. That would make me think about buying a house. Stripping one feature wall not so difficult.

It's crazy to decorate your house for a future imaginary buyer, your environment has a big impact on your mood & should make you happy.

Bluntness100 · 07/10/2019 09:31

A feature wall can be lovely. But it needs to be a beautiful wallpaper. And paint that is tonal. Cheap crap from Homebase, or something with big gaudy flowers will just look passé. But done right, it can work very well.

kjhkj · 07/10/2019 09:48

agreed

AlexaAmbidextra · 07/10/2019 10:16

I am currently having my bedroom redecorated and a feature wall is being papered as I write. I give not a shiny shit whether it is passé or not. Tbh, I find people who base their personal decisions on whether others think something is passé or not to be somewhat sheep like.

GherkinTherapy · 07/10/2019 10:35

Hmm, we've just been house hunting recently AlexaAmbidextra and given that most of the houses we looked at had feature wall, I'm thinking that having a feature wall is also rather sheep like! That said we are buying a house riddled with feature walls, the homebase type bluntness referred to, it didn't put me off the house, but we will be getting rid of them right away.

AlexaAmbidextra · 07/10/2019 10:44

The point I was making is, have a feature wall if you want one or don’t have a feature wall if you don’t want one. Rather strange imo to base your decision on whether others decide that something is passé/not chic/unfashionable. It isn’t the having or the not having of a feature wall that’s sheep like. It’s giving credence to the opinions of strangers that is imo rather feeble.

smugmug · 07/10/2019 10:44

Unless you redecorate to sell just paint it in neutral colours , if I was buying I wouldn't be put off with a feature wall but would expect a drop in price to reflect a complete decoration so would others
