Wood effect tiles - will I regret it?

Please tell me if you have done it and possibly show me what the final product looks like!?
And if you considered it and went for something else, what was it and why?
We need to find a flooring for the whole ground floor that we would agree on...
Originally was thinking Edwardian pattern hallway and downstairs loo, wood in the front room and possibly tile in kitchen and dining area but not sure what to do with the sitting room part of the open plan and also unsure of so many different surfaces and how to join them up etc.

So I thought if I run the same floor - wood effect tiles - throughout the whole of the ground floor I just have one floor? Is it too much?

We have wood effect vinyl in our hallway, downstairs loo and dining room and hardwood flooring in our lounge. The vinyl is fantastic. It's harder wearing for those areas and looks amazing. I know it might sound strange (vinyl - no way!) but it isn't like the old spongy vinyl tiles, they came in long 'planks', and I would definitely recommend them over something like laminate.

Koumak · 01/10/2019 13:28

Actually it is not strange at all! We put vinyl wood effect planks in our previous house but I was told they don't work as well with the under floor heating? Apparently tiles are the best?
Have you got any photos I could take peak at or link what you used? Did you have the think version or the ones that bend? Glued or click system?
Thank you!

We don’t have underfloor heating so I’m afraid I can’t help you there. I’ve taken some photos (not great) and I’ll send them to you directly if I can and I’ll try to find out which ones we used :)

WingDefence · 01/10/2019 13:41

Okay hopefully this will work as I don’t seem to be able to DM you photos Hmm

The first one is the hallway, then there is a photo of the edge of the hallway and the terracotta tiles in the kitchen and last is the join between the hallway and the real oak in the lounge (hallway at the top and the lighter oak at the bottom). The lighting in the hall makes it looks more hello against the sunlight on the oak flooring - they look more similar in real life.

Hopefully someone else can help with more advice soon!

I am having wood effect tiles with underfloor heating. Can upload pics when installed.

Wildwood6 · 01/10/2019 15:36

I've had this in the past :) It looked great, and was lovely with the underfloor heating. Its also much more hard wearing than laminate wooden floors, which always seem to get scuffed. Its worth mentioning that when the heating isn't on it always feels cool underfoot, which is actually rather nice in the summer, but bear in mind you'll want the heating on at a low temperature a lot at other times of the year or it will feel chilly underfoot. No problem if your heating is switched on most of the time anyway, but as my ExH always begrudged putting the heating on until it was really cold this became a bone of contention!

Also consider very carefully the grout you use and how thick the grout lines are- it looks best with thin grout lines and grout that matches the wood colour as closely as possible. HTH!

MediocreOmens · 01/10/2019 17:45

We have it in our bathroom in a herringbone pattern, I am away at the moment so can't take a picture I am afraid. I was sceptical at first but I love it, everyone thinks it's wood we've had treated to go in the bathroom. We had very thin gaps between the tiles and the grout is dark so it gives the effect of parquet flooring.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 01/10/2019 17:55

I've just taken delivery of 50 square metres of wood effect porcelain tiles so I hope they look good!
I've been recommended to ask the tiler to use stain resist resin grout in a matching shade. The catalogue photo shows them with pale contrast grout which I don't like

I've just had them laid in our ensuite, with UFH. They look great, but as PP said, don't make the mistake I did and put white grout with dark wood effect tiles. 😔

colouringinpro · 01/10/2019 18:45

I'm having them, so thanks for grout tips! You can generally good ones now as a result of digital imaging

DinoroarDinosaur · 01/10/2019 18:45

When my dh first suggested wood effect tiles I looked at him like he was mad, however, we did end up getting them and they look fantastic. I would definitely get them again. Will post a photo once kids in bed.

Ooh I think you are onto something here ladies! Loving the pics. Lovely homes!

Hubby still keen on vinyl but I really want to attempt the heringbone style tiles. I always wanted heringbone parquet in solid wood but not suitable with the heating so would love to see how that is done?

Have seen the difference grout colour makes in the shops so def will go thin and dark shade if we decide to go for it.

Have you found tiles were chraper than engineered wood?

Also are there any special preps needed before the tiles go down? We have concrete atm?

So I am browsing online now and liking this sort of thing.
I am thinking I could continue this on the patio from the dining room/kitchen area.
Has anyone do this?
These are suitable for outside too.

Or these indoor use only though

I will order samples but these do look very realistic?
What do you all think?

Cantthinkofapassword · 02/10/2019 17:14

We have it and people tip toe in thinking it is a real wood floor.

Koumak · 02/10/2019 17:34

Ooh thesw same ones? Happy with them then? Have you laid them in a pattern or traditional?

We've just had Porcelanosa Starwood tiles installed across the whole ground floor, except the WC. It looks even better than I dared hope. Wide tiles, thin gap and a quite neutral grout rather than white or dark. We've underfloor heating throughout and so far so good. Here's a bit of a sample of how it looks.

You do need an experienced tiler with porcelain Wood. The design is printed so you will have the same board reappearing, they need to make sure they don't lay several identical ones side by side. They should be scattered and reversed to keep it looking natural and random
