Front door colour for a 1950s house

Can anyone help me out for choosing a front door colour for a 1950s house with little character or charm? It is currently dark brown wood with matching side panels and I need to decide this week Grin

Bright red. Looks cheerful, and easy to direct people to your house if it stand out a bit.

wowfudge · 23/09/2019 13:41

What colour are the bricks or render?

MyIncapableOne · 23/09/2019 14:02

It’s red brick and windows have just been painted white. I was confidently thinking red but I saw my postwoman this morning who said “oh no, not red” and if anyone knows about front doors it’s posties!!

My neighbour has an Invisible Green door, our postie (and us) take the piss that we can still see it. Obviously this joke only works if you tell everyone the door is in invisible green Grin

How about the colour of Berylware crockery? Berylware was designed in the 1930s but still very popular in the 1950s (you still sometimes find it in village halls etc today). It's a soft green colour, similar to eau de nil.

PigletJohn · 23/09/2019 15:17

red has the curious characteristic of fading in sunlight. If you look at Royal Mail vans you will see what might have influenced your postie.

PragmaticWench · 23/09/2019 16:47

With red brick 50s style I think dark red or dark blue look good.

Mummyshark2018 · 23/09/2019 18:12

I have red brick and a dark green door which imo goes well.

DirtyWindow · 23/09/2019 18:22

I love bright red doors. I agree with PragmaticWench - dark red or dark blue would look great. If you go for dark blue you could paint the garden gate to match.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 23/09/2019 18:29

Would the blue colour of Cornishware crockery by TGGreen work?

MyIncapableOne · 23/09/2019 18:41

Thanks for all your replies.

It seems like red is a popular choice despite the postie’s opinion. She did point to her post bag when I asked her why not red.

Can anyone recommend a nice - not too orangey - dark red?

theconstantinoplegardener I’ve googled Berylware and it’s a lovely colour. Funnily enough the postie suggested duck egg so not too dissimilar. I am trying to imagine the door in that colour but I must admit that it’s red that I see when I imagine the Christmas wreath on the door Smile

Pigletjohn could you recommend a good paint that won’t fade?

OP posts:
PigletJohn · 23/09/2019 23:51

I like a darkish Sherwood green with a Christmas wreath on it.

It's only red that is prone to fading. I don't know why. Black is not good facing the sun as it gets hot and may crack. I'm not so keen on white now as it is popular for plastic doors, which I dislike. However, modern white paints do not go yellow if they are exposed to sunlight.

That leaves blue.

I have no great opinion on brands of paint but often use Dulux. I still like oil-based, and IMO Aluminium Wood Primer is the most durable outdoors. Pay special attention to the top and bottom of the door which are usually neglected and are the most prone to damp damage.

Professional painters say that Trade paints from major makers are better than DIY paints, on the grounds that DIY paints are designed to be easy to apply rather than durable. I don't know how true that is.

If you have a nice hardwood door you can stain it, but stain is not as durable as paint so best sheltered under at least an open porch.

If I had a 1950’s house I would go for yellow! Somehow I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I think it would look great and be a change from the generic colours that are everywhere.

Left a bit out *somehow yellow is reminiscent of the 50’s I think.

MyIncapableOne · 24/09/2019 10:28

Thank you all. So many lovely colours! I now wish I had lots of front doors so I could choose several Smile

@PigletJohn thanks for the paint tips.

@flouncyfanny that’s exactly the red I had in mind. Any idea what shade that that is?

@BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo Yellow was the other colour the postie mentioned! I’m quite liking the yellow actually.

My dd wants purple!

@OliviaBenson these Little Greene colours are all lovely too. Polar blue could work!

It needs to be quite bright I think as it has a porch and currently looks quite gloomy. So I might have narrowed it down to red, yellow and something similar to Little Greene’s polar blue Grin

We have purple. I like it.

But sounds like you want something lighter.

MyIncapableOne · 24/09/2019 20:20

I like the purple too. So many choices ... arghh!!

MyIncapableOne · 24/09/2019 22:37

Clarabellawilliamson Grin I’m coming round to yellow. Not sure DH is.

I like yellow door number 2 above so need to try to colour match.

I think red just make sure it's red red not a pinky red
