Lincoln to live?

Can anyone tell me which areas of Lincoln are family friendly. Ideally with schools within a short distance and local shops. I'd like to be able to drive to the centre within 20 minutes and have retail park/supermarket nearby. Oh and public transport is a must with 2 teenagers.
Not too built up and not near flood areas.
I don't know the area at all apart from Xmas shopping 🎅🏼, but wary as you seem to be able to get a lot of house for your money. Smile

Hi, I live in Lincoln and always have actually!

I live in an area called glebe Park, lots of families/retired people, 10 mins walk is a small shopping plaza consisting of... Asda, Iceland, Pizza Hut, kfc, hairdressers, chippy, pet shop, post office etc, right next to it is a supersize Waitrose. There’s also a Starbucks and a gym. The town centre it 15 mins drive away and there are buses every 20 mins.

Hope this helps

Izzystar31 · 05/09/2019 13:56

Also to add, there’s another estate about 5 mins drive from me, Carlton Centre, it hahahahaha an even better “shopping area” I sometimes walk there as it’s only 15 mins.

They’ve got a Lidl, Aldo, McDonald’s, Dunelm, Argos and a lot more, probably the same distance to the town centre too

Tigerwhocamefortea · 05/09/2019 14:01

There are lots of nice areas around Lincoln. If you wanted to be a little further outside the centre then there are some lovely quiet villages along the A46 such as Bassingham.

Witham St Hugh’s is a huge new housing estate which has created its own village. There is an outstanding primary school, co-op, bar/restaurant and a day nursery. It’s 20 minute drive into Lincoln city centre.

JJSS123 · 05/09/2019 14:02

I’m in Lincoln too! North Hykeham is lovely. Good transport lots of choices in styles of houses. Bracebridge Heath is good too! Washingborough is lovely. All good transport.

JJSS123 · 05/09/2019 14:02

Witham st Hughes is lovely but not a lot there and barely any transport. That’s why we haven’t moved there.

JJSS123 · 05/09/2019 14:03

Also north Hykeham has a big ASDA!

TheRLodger · 05/09/2019 15:45

Nothing really to add apart from went to a lincoln for uni and it is a fab city. It’s just the right size and has everything you want it to have

SleepyKat · 05/09/2019 16:09

North hykeham and saxilby are both on the train line and have good bus services to Lincoln. I don’t think you can guarantee anywhere nearby being a 20 min drive to the centre as traffic can be bad. But they’re as near as anywhere unless you live in the city.

Saxilby is a village with smaller shops, ok size co-op. North hykeham is like a suburb of Lincoln now....like pp said, massive Asda. NH has secondary schools. Saxilby they’re a bus ride away. Welton village is another choice but no train line.

BubblesBuddy · 05/09/2019 18:33

I stayed in Lincoln recently but I couldn’t imagine living there. So remote! Flat and fairly uninteresting countryside. There are better areas!

Fruityb · 05/09/2019 18:35

Bracebridge Heath ftw! I love it here. North Hykeham is nice but traffic can be busy. So can Lincoln centre to be fair!

I love living round here - it’s the best.

princesconsuelabananahammock · 06/09/2019 09:43

Thank you all. I had a little look last night at all the areas and all seem ideal so I'll have to start seeing the choice of houses in those areas.
We had seen some new builds in Nettleham and Skellingthorpe; can anyone give any info on those villages?

Nettleham is close ish to the Carlton centre but kinda stuck for the teenagers but nice quiet village close enough to where you would want to be.

Skellingthorpe is lovely the houses are really nice their. Not 100% about school but I know the transport isn’t great I had friends that lived there as teenagers and they was kind of stuck abit and taxis aren’t ideal all the time. I can check a taxi price if you would like. But skellingthorpe is close to the A46 so ideal for travelling out of Lincoln for work etc. And you’re very close to daisy made which is always fab ☺️ Hope this helps

Is Doddington Park considered a good area? Looks very leafy?

SleepyKat · 06/09/2019 12:49

Nettleham is considered a "naice" village. Good (village) shops, good primary school and in catchment for Will Farr secondary which is excellent.

Skellingthorpe not quite as many facilities. Nice play park, the doctors surgery is closing down, there's a small co-o, post office and a primary school. Bikeable via a good cycle path into town and also buses. Not sure which secondary school the village feeds into - possibly the City School on Skellingthorpe rd, which has a new name....Priory? Not got a very good reputation

SleepyKat · 06/09/2019 12:52

Doddington Park is a bit of a soulless massive housing estate in my opinion. Doesn't strike me as being leafy when I've driven through. Merges into Birchwood estate which is fairly rough. But Doddington Park itself is nicer and I have friends who live there happily - it's a nightmare to get out the estate in the morning though. I picked someone up there once and was 20 mins queuing to get back onto Doddington Rd and she said it was fairly typical.

FAQs · 06/09/2019 17:00

Navenby is nice, not sure re schools though.

Fruityb · 06/09/2019 17:20

Doddington Park is a nightmare to drive to and from at most times - it’s just so busy. It’s on a main artery of the city so just a total pain. Not a lot in Skelly either - buses are a pain as we used to have a lot of kids late to us. It would feed into Priory City which isn’t great but a lot of the schools in the city are available to people from all over as long as you can get there.

Navenby is a bit out of the way - for me it would be anyway.

princesconsuelabananahammock · 07/09/2019 11:15

Thanks everyone. We like the look of washingborough, Bracebridge Heath, skellingthorpe and Nettleham. Having trouble finding houses apart from a few but sometimes that's a good sign.
Which beach would be the nearest to Lincoln? We love the idea of being able to go to the coast with the kids for the day as it's a 2 hour drive from where we are now so we never bother.

Waddington, bracebridge heath and Harmston are nice areas.

Weathergirl1 · 07/09/2019 11:24

Not from Lincoln itself but from the nearby coast!! Cleethorpes would be about 45 minutes drive along the A46 and is on the end of the train line (station is literally next to the beach). Not sure how long it would take to get to Mablethorpe or Skegness though. Sutton on Sea & Sandilands are lovely beaches too (just south of Mablethorpe).

Weathergirl1 · 07/09/2019 11:29

PS: probably an hour to Cleethorpes from the city centre - I judge 45 minutes from when we turn off the ring road onto the A46 proper!

ZeroFuchsGiven · 07/09/2019 11:50

Depending what kind of beach you want there are a few, personally I avoid skegness and those types of places. Anderby creek is beautiful and of course Donna Nook in the winter to see the baby seals.

Fruityb · 07/09/2019 20:39

Chapel St Leonard’s and Sutton on sea are lovely.

SleepyKat · 07/09/2019 21:15

Washy is bad for traffic for getting into lincoln, not sure if the new bypass will improve things or make it worse when it opens.
